We've got some good news regarding The Zoo at Anthrocon 2017!

The Zoo has officially been moved from Hall D on the Ground Floor of the DLCC to DLCC Rooms 401 through 405 on the 4th floor:

Anthrocon 2017 Zoo Anthrocon 2017 Zoo

Anthrocon 2017 Zoo Anthrocon 2017 Zoo

The airwalls between those rooms will be broken down, allowing for a giant continuous space. We will have the space outside of those rooms available for hanging out and socializing. And, as shown in the pictures above, there will be floor to ceiling windows allowing natural light.

We hope you are as excited about the new location as we are! Smiling

That is AWESOME!! The Zoo last year felt apart from the con, I only went in once and there were maybe 20 people in there. It was rather awkward, plus I overheard that no one really knew where it was. Now it feels like it's going to be a part of the con space once again. Smiling

I didn't go to the zoo last year, but I'm curious as to what it really is? Am I correct in guessing it's just like a generel hangout area?

Mox, Yes, the Zoo is the name for the general hangout area at a furry con.

Yeah, you are correct, the Zoo is just a general area where people hang out and relax, generally there are no special events that happen there

This is my first con, can someone please clear something up for me. Is The Zoo, kind of like a headless lounge?

No, as mentioned above, the Zoo is just a general hangout spot. There are a couple headless zones throughout the whole con area, both in the hotel and in the actual convention center. These areas will be marked with signs, and will be closed off to all non-suiters, barring handlers.

yay no more cold scary looking half empty room, it does pose a couple questions though how will people gain access to the zoo during evening hours and is the zoo going to be open for a shorter period of time due to it being in the upper convention space?

Isn't that the area where they held tabletop/video games last year?

Oooh, nice that the Zoo is now in a space that's better tied in with other con space, and this location is less remote than the old space in Hall D.
As a space planner and from observing where people tend to naturally gather in the DLCC, I would think that a space on the Third Floor would be better suited as it's a more central location. I hope this new location proves me wrong!! Smiling

It's just up the escalator from the atrium and gallery outside the 3rd floor ballroom. Your observation about the 3rd floor is true enough, but the corresponding space is already in use as the Headless Zone, and as I recall those are the largest available rooms on both the 3rd and 4th floors.

My intent is not to antagonize, but to achieve a greater understanding. Puzzled
I would not presume to move the Headless Lounge from it's present location, as it's an ideal location for the dances. Unfortunately, I have seen it used as a social area due to it's central location. People don't like to have to "go someplace" to hang out when there's all ready somplace convenient nearby, like the headless lounge or the seating area in front of Con-ops. I was thinking more on the other side of the visitor corridor, like rooms 315-318.

This does raise a question I have always had. Why does the Zoo get moved from the Ballroom in the Westin anyway? I would think in the evenings it would be a more convenient location.

More space for people, and freed up space in the Westin for other events.

The long and short of it is we outgrew the Westin spaces for the Zoo. My team and I have started using the Westin's ballroom for general programming over the past few years and will be continuing to do so as it allows us a good amount of space to work with the room.

Also - we rebranded the Headless Lounge to be the Headless Zone - the Headless Zone is not meant to be a place to be social and hang out. The intention is for suiters to use it to cool down, change, or in general take a quick break. That's why the Zone is only available to suiters, and a handler was needed.

Also the room you named, 315-318 are also utilized for Programming spaces during the day and evenings.

This is the best possible news for me about AC. I love hanging out in the zoo with friends, but the latest one has felt cold, impersonal and too far away. New location is great! Carpet floors to keep it quieter, and near the main con events + fursuit lounges. This can only result in good things.

Ever since the Zoo was moved out of the Westin to the ground floor space, it's really been more evocative of like, your turn of the century iron cage type zoo more than anything. Though I honestly didn't think the location itself was horrible, the room was just very, well, impersonal seeming as has been mentioned, and again, nobody seemed to know where it was despite being pretty much right outside the entranceway.

Should be interesting to see how this functions as the new Zoo. Great news either way!

This year'll mark my third year going to Anthrocon, and this is the first I've heard of the supposedly-apptly-named "Zoo." I look forward to chilling with all you other crazies  Dance   Hug

Horrah, no longer will it feel like a prison cafateria.... some of us don't like the idea of being caged.

If memory serves thats the area "Above" where things like the Who's lion is it, and such took place, very large rooms? for some reason I thought there were a few events normally around that space(Was it the vidgame/boardgame rooms?)  maybe those were closer to the escalators(Numbers like 415 and so on come to mind),

Though there will be some rearangment of foot traffic from the new loaction might make escalators more crouded I don't think the Zoo empties out in huge numbers at any one point during the day(Possible exception at DLC closing time? i've never been up that late so wouldn't know).

Might actually have some REALLY nice views out the windows too

It's on the opposite end of the 4th floor from the rooms you're thinking of. It's divided from the rest of the 4th floor rooms by the roof walkway. Unfortunately the view out the windows is mostly the railroad trestle, the roof, and the outside wall of the upper half of the ballroom.

Rooms 401-405 on this map:

This seems like a good move, yes. The lower zoo felt to...out of the way.

Plus this brings people closer to the video game room. Which is always good for us.

Forgive a slightly unconnected question does this also mean that the DLCC will be open 24 hours a day? for some reason i thought last year only the lower floor with the zoo was open at all hours, with the current location I'd assume pretty much the vast majority would have to be be open to allow travel to and from

No. We're working on an appropriate solution, but from 2am and on the majority of the DLCC will be closed and secured. They've bent their typical rules a bit to allow the Zoo to be open in the late nights the past two years, which has been very kind of them, and we're workign on ways for it to occur int he new space.

Ah, glad your aware and working on it, sometimes these problems don't leap to mind when something exciting and new is here, then they ambush you when its much harder to find a solution

Oh, there'll be problems ambushing us!

We just hope to reduce the ambush from a brigade with rifles to one guy with a pointy stick.

yes I thought it was on the 1st floor in recent years  to allow 24 hour acess when the con was using the DLCC.I dont understand why so many people found hall D so hard to find though. All you had to do is make a left at the convention center entrence

That was due to Herd- or Pack-instinct kicking in, and following the crowd up or down the escalator.

The Tigers, Skunks, and Foxes - all the "solitary" critters - had no trouble at all making that little deviation from the migration path.

While I'll always miss the Westin ballroom Zoo, I like this change! I agree that it feels more like part of the con now as opposed to when it was in Hall D the last two years. The Zoo felt really lifeless and barren (not to mention cold and weirdly bright??? it was a bizarre setup) and I hope this helps to bring back the warmer, more intimate feeling the Zoo had in the Westin.

The cut off time is unfortunate, but understandable considering it's further in to the convention center and easier for people to sneak around if they wanted.
