Does This Mean You're <kaff><kaff> Not Coming?<snif>
Although it is too early to tell what will happen in the next two months, it appears to be of some concern worldwide.
OK, thanks, everyone. I'll be there (I had already pre-registered and paid for the plane ticket anyway).
I think that it's a little early for panic. More people have died in Europe from the "common" flu this year than have even been diagnosed with Swine flu in the USA.
It's something I'm going to be keeping a close eye on, but right now I'm still intending to make the journey.
I think that the only thing that would stop me and my family from coming would be if we actually caught the swine flu. Other than that we will be there.
I was wondering about that. From what I've heard, large gatherings in the USA are not recommended, and my family's worried that anyone who attends AC will get infected. Is the risk as great as the media make it sound? Are there any precautions that can be taken?

This is news to me.
I worked security at an Anime Con with about 15,000 attendees the other weekend, and we had no restrictions whatsoever, vis-a-vis Swine Flu.
You people realize that if the news just called it H1N1, no one would be panicing? 100 deaths from H1N1, 13,000 from Flu, which is worse?
100? I'd heard it had been several hundreds. And a friend told me he heard on the news that a girl went to Disneyland and then came back to Argentina and went to school and her whole class got infected. Some people are already saying that anyone who goes to the USA needs to stay at home isolated for 10 days after s/he returns.
I doubt there's real reason for such panic, but I'd be more comfortable if people could at least agree on the alleged facts.
So far, I'm still planning to attend. After all, I've already pre-registered, bought the plane ticket and found someone to share a room. If it gets worse... it's hard to tell.
"I heard..."
"A friend told me that he heard..."
"Some people are saying..."
Are you familiar with the word rumor?
Yes, that's why I want to know the truth. I wouldn't be asking if I'd just assumed the worst.
The truth...
As many people have already stated the H1N1 flu has only taken a fraction of the lives that the normal flu takes yearly. Also a good chunk of the people who have died from H1N1 are people who had some sort of other existing health issue. As long as you are in good health, and take proper hygenic precautions such as washing your hands or covering you mouth when you sneaze or cough you'll be fine.
Rumors are nasty things which cause more problems than needed.
Srsly, you'd be much worse off if Ebola broke out, Flu<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Boston this past weekend hosted Anime Boston which I'm told is one of the largest Anime Conventions around. I myself do not feel sick and have not heard of any new cases in the area developing.
I can't speak for the US, but as a Brit, I've currently got little/no concern about coming...I'm going to keep an eye on things, sure, but no point in worrying too much over problems that don't exist yet
And just to drop this off here, I read an article a few months ago on flu research. Apparently the virus has a lot of trouble staying alive in the air in warm temperatures, which is why the flu is commonly transmitted during the autumn and winter months. Moreover, according to what I read, the virus pretty much stops being communicable in temperatures above 85^F.
Pittsburgh in July. 'Nuff said on that note.

Makes you wonder what they would declare if they ever learned about the common cold.
pandemic simply means geographic spread, not virus severity

For example, the "regular" flu is already a pandemic. It shows up on every continent. Other pandemics include the common cold, gingivitis and the Jonas Brothers. With the possible exception of the latter you do not see people flying into a panic over them.
That just made my day. I still dislike all three though, lol.
I know that. It's just that there's a lot of paranoia going on in here. To the point that there have closed many schools as soon as they found out one of their students was infected. There are some people who believe it's about as lethal as the ebola, even though only 1 person has died from it in my country (a 3-months-old baby). Anyway, I've done some research and it doesn't seem to be any worse than the common flu, so I'm not worrying about it anymore.
"I'm not owrrying about it anymore"
That's the best thing to do!!!!!!
A friend of mine just found out yesterday that what she thought was alergies for the past two week was actually a case of swine flu after going to the doctor's. Though she is now taking proper precautions, nobody in her family (they live in a small house) has developed it, and nobody in the small dry cleaners she works in has caught it either. As it has been said too many times to be counted, just wash your hands, and practice proper hygene.

If this outbreak is contained and cured quickly, as we all hope it shall be and is the most likely outcome, then our foreign guests will certainly attend.
If it ends up like Steven King's The Stand, well that's different.
