Anthrocon 2009 DJ Spotlight: Protocollie
Anthrocon features some of the most talented DJs in the Furry Fandom, but who are they really? We'll be taking some time in the weeks running up to the convention to let you know, in their own words, what makes them tick and what you can expect from their sets.
It's time for another DJ Spotlight, this week I'm turning the attention to a personal favorite, returning in 2009 to blow the roof off the Spirit of Pittsburgh, Protocollie!
Stage Name: Protocollie
Influences: Tigerskin, Sasha, Ableton, Jack Daniels
Genres Played: Stuff that shakes rumps
DJ Style: I flail around a lot
Biography:
You might remember me from AC2008, FAU2008, MFF2008, FCN2009, or AC2009 (if you happen to be a time traveler, which you may be. If so, can you please bring me some music from the future? That would probably help my career. Thanks.) I've been DJing for 10ish years and not stopped yet (except for the brief period where I stopped.) I've played on turntables, with controllers, pretty much everything under the sun. Now, I play in in ableton, on 6 decks at a time.
I'm supposed to make you want to go see me, so, uhm. Let's see. I guess the best I can say is this is what I feel at home doing. I love playing music, I love DJing, and I explore all the different ways in which I can make the experience fun for everyone and change things up a lot. I mix really quickly sometimes, sometimes I let tracks linger for a while - it all depends on how the floor is feeling. I'm not content to let a track sit and play out. I fiddle with it. I tweak things. I won't leave you sitting with no beat in a breakdown for 10 minutes while some long, drawn-out build slowly rolls in, but I won't keep you constantly running at full speed all night, either. I control the energy. I let it build slowly and then I'll let it explode when I feel the time is right. I don't lock myself into a genre. I'll play anything that fits at the moment. When I play I am 100% in to what I do. I really, really, really am enjoying playing and I chase a serious good feeling I get when my set is going right. I notice when I feel that way, other people are enjoying it, too.
I play a lot of stuff - anything that I think works at the moment. If you like electro house, breakbeat, techno or tech house you'll probably be happily at home with me. I spend a lot of time digging through tracks. A ton. I really try and pick out awesome stuff so that I have a nice arsenal for the dance floor when I get up. I've got some weapons right now I'm saving specifically for AC - they're really good. I swear. If I get around to playing them. If you like to dance, just show up and I promise you'll enjoy yourself. I'm really looking forward to playing for AC again. Someone brought me a cookie once while I was playing. You can, too.
