Furry names and real names : Which do you use?
Hey there people!
I was curious how you deal with names of people within the fandom.
Do you mostly use their furry name or their real name when talking to them?
Are there people you simply couldn,t talk to or about using their real names? or their furry names?
I must say that personally it's a big 50/50 within my friends group.
Some of them I can't get myself to call anything other then their real official legal name.
And other I try as much as I can but still can't call anything else than their handle.
What about you people?
I tend to call my boyfriend by his real name instead of his character's name because I knew him as himself before I knew him as a furry. Everyone else I call by their characters' names, usually because that's what they introduced themselves as.
Depends on the person I guess. I personally don't care if someone wishes to call me Steve at a con :3
The big blue husky, Blooski!
Nice to meet you Steve, my name is...Steve X3
Anyway, I also usually call people by whichever name they introduce themselves as. However, real name depends on some situations. Ex: Around the person's family members.
By friends in the fandom I go by Nikita
By family members and friends out of the fandom I go by Seth or Tony
By teachers and staff I go by Anthony.
99% of the time, I use their fursona name. However I do revert back to using their human name if what we're talking about is more personal and non-furry related, such as when I was trying to comfort a close friend the other day who was really depressed and upset over something. In those instances, I think it's more personal (I'd hate to call it more "human") to address someone as "Steve" rather than, for example, "Blackfang Huskypaws".
Also, most furs that I know introduce themselves with their fursona name - in some cases I don't even know their human one !
I'm Milt, both ways.
For conbadge, my furname of course, but those I know personally. I usually call them by their RL name... unless I have a cutesy nick name for them, then I use that instead!
At furcons, nearly everyone calls me "Kage." It's so common I often don't realize people are talking to me when they call me by my proper name.
The better question is "Which name do *they* use?"
A name, for better or worse, is never *accurate*. It is simply a label, something abstract that you associate yourself with to make your life easier. In reality, your name is whatever people know you by. So any given name can be both right and wrong at the same time, but it can never be accurate because you are you regardless of the label someone chooses to put on you.
Which is why I have several names. My mother refers to me as one name, while furries tend to refer to me by my fursuit's name or by my older furry name (which is what I use here). And my boss refers to me as the "Penguin King", but that is a story for another day.
-The two saddest words in the English language are "Good bye"
Really depends on the name. A lot of friends have sorta cute, short furry names that I can shorten down to sounds like 'skwi' or 'creo', and I tend to call them by their furry names.
If they're like, Wolfpaws Arcticdong, I tend to call them by their real name. Also closer friends sometimes become 'real name' folks, too.
Not many people know my real name, though some people know my initials. It took me a little while to get used to being called 'Tape' but somewhat more quickly than I expected.
I did actually refer to my own name at one point which may have confused the person I was talking to at the time...
With most furries, I have to concentrate to remember their legal names. I'm more comfortable with a fursona-name, and so far, I've only run into one person who was more comfortable with their legal name.
The name "Snippet" was given to me by one of the few who generally address me by my RL name! Strange... Probably 90% of my friends use that name or another nickname - I think that happens when you have a kinda weird RL name to begin with. It's easier than listening to folks jack it up.
1/2 of Bunnies Blue
I suppose it depends on the situation. If I happen to know the person in question personally, I'm more inclined to stick to a personal name. That is, of course, unless I only know them by their furry name. I do actually have a few friends like that. So I guess it's more of a "Whatever name you give me first, that's the one I'll call you by."
Personally, I don't care which name people use for me. In fact, my con badge has my real name listed (well, nickname, actually) because my fursona didn't tell me her name until AFTER I had registered.
"When I work, I work very fast, but preparing to work can take any length of time." --Cy Twombly
I just let my friends call me what they're comfortable with. Most will go with my name, others will call me Nall, some will just call me "bunny" or "rabbit", so whatevs!
I've always liked using "furry" names so much more. It's a fun break from the norms of reality.
At Anthrocon, I principally go by Chiaroscuro, simply because there are too many people to be the only one called Bob.
Of course, back in '05, there was significant radio chat that went: "Ops to Chee*static*" "Chee-tah or Chi-a?" "Cheetah kitty mew mew." Repeat about five or six times during the convention.

Ah, yes! I remember it well - one of Ian Fleming's lesser-known "Juvenile" books. Later turned into a feature-length motion picture, for theatrical release. Featured the actor Dick Van Dyke, if I'm not mistaken*.
Someone ought to be able to come up with a good filk-song from that suggestion, and have it ready to hear before Closing Ceremonies on the 5th!
NOTE: - *Either that, or it was the name of one of the more, uhm, "exotic" Bond Girls, from 007's adventures.
People who know me through the fandom tend to call me KP. If they are people that I know from outside the fandom, then it's my real name. If I'm in a mixed setting, it really varies on circumstance. The one thing that is a part of the rule is, if you know me more personally, you'll be more likely to call me by my nickname.
I'm just Charles. Cuz my characters are not 'me'. In fact, Charline would be deeply offended if she were associated too closely with me.
She hates me and wants to kill me. :<
For the furry fandom (and as much online as possible) I use my handle. For work, it's my *last* name, which is rather unique in a goofy way so I try not to use it outside of work.
Besides, I chose my "handle" and am perfectly comfortable being called "Tyrrlin" or "Tyrr"
i have and had so many nicknames that i answer to almost anything. but fandom friends can call me Das. if you do know my name i'll answer to that too. dosn't matter to me.
What is in a name?
Fore if a rose be called by any other name, would it not smell quite as sweet? (paraphrased from Romeo and Juliet)
I figured somone had to say it.
A rose isn't sentient Juliet so it wouldn't CARE about being named something else.
However , we human beings CARE and identify to a name.
And it is known that even if minimal , our names DO have an effect on our lives!
I love you all ..
except for the people I don't like..
Some roses are scentless...
If I'm out of suit I use my real name. If I'm in suit I use my furry name.
