Had a quick thought moments ago that I was wondering whether had been already addressed by the con staff for this coming year. With the advent of the Wii, and the MANY injuries/damages incurred by it's users so far, I wanted to see if it had been thought of by our staff already, assuming someone would be dragging one in for the duration. Kinda was worried, given the sue-frenzies of the last decade, and people's general lack of common sense when it comes to such, as well as the policies of many of the hotels conventions have been held in.

Mostly I just didn't want to see AC held responsible for someone getting smacked in the face, simply for lack of foresight to warn people to play at their own risk =^.^=

Otherwise, sounds like it's going to be an amazing year, and kudos once again on last year's work, guys. This is one of the outings that makes it really worth being in Pennsylvania.

I think if the Wii is in the game room then the same space, should be given to it as if you were going to play ddr. Most people I know, myself included understand that if your not respecting the space you need to play then that is the time will when accidents happen.

It's funny you should mention that, seeing that I just got back from working security at MagFest, which was essentially a video game convention (with rock concerts at night).

Anyway, there were quite a few Wii consoles to be found at this convention, and I noticed that Wii Sports was probably the single most played Wii game.

The number of Wii-related injuries during MagFest was exactly zero. Taking into account that there were many more Wii consoles there than are likely to be at AC, I would say that our chances or having a Wii-related injury are minimal. And if something does happen, that's what we have the Dorsai Irregulars for. Smiling

Awesome. Mostly, like I'd said, I wasn't sure if the issue had come up in the midst of the millions of other tiny little details I'm sure you guys deal with on a regular basis yearly. And yes, I agree the likelyhood is probably realistically very small, but you know there's always some yahoo out there just over 18/21 (thus making the parental consent form a nonissue), that would have a moment of 'teh stupid', get hurt, and then go home to some overprotective parent who then may sue AC's parent organization.

Yes, these are the things I think of when stuck in my little hole for hours on end, hehe. But yeah, I figured there was probably already legal indemnification there on Anthrocon's side, but it always pays to check.

Thanks guys!

It does beg the question, though, as to what happens if some yingyang lets go of the Wii remote and smashes one of our TV's.

We'd expect the person to replace it, of course, but it would still be unpleasant and would leave us short a TV.

We may require that either the new stronger wrist-straps be used. If the person does not have such, we could have a roll of duct tape handy to secure the remote to the player's hand.

What about those large thick rubber bands?

Saw one in use here (Bottom Controller): http://www.wiihaveaproblem.com/images/p137/04.jpg

But I love this strap XD

I sheet of Lexan can be purchased very cheaply at any hardware store. We have one in from of our Wii tv at home and it does not impede the view of the tv at all.. plus it add the protection of, essentially, bulletproof glass to your TV screen.

As for any thing on this earth...people are going to find ways to break things and screw them up. Common sense is not so common anymore. Most anyone knows how to use the Wii and Wiimotes correctly. The console shows you a pictorial reference on how to use the Wiimotes..some people can't follow simple instructions. People have fallen and hurt themselves off many a DDR pad, and never mind the feeling of dying after playing a difficult song, but just because a few people have hurt themselves on DDR doesn't mean everyone is. The same with the Wii...just because a few people are dumb and don't strap the Wiimote on correctly doesn't mean that everyone is going to launch it into a TV.

As such, thanks to AC staff for answering!

And remember, my point wasn't so much how often it happens, but that Anthrocon was covered in the event it did. Once again, I agree, these incidents happen rarely, as the numbers go, but personally, I'd rather have things covered than to see Anthrocon out a tv/etc..., or worse yet, having some bad PR because said people hurt themselves and blamed the convention for it, like idiots, or it leaked to the media. With the, shall we say, 'abnormality' of the event, you could almost be certain if something like that got out, they'd be sure to make jokes at our expense, yet again making things worse for the fandom at large.

Admittedly, that's worst case scenario, making things MUCH worse than they're ever likely to be. But then, sometimes it pays off to think worst case, especially where liabilities and safety are concerned, in these rough days.

Though I'd hate to admit it, I've witnessed one of my Wii remotes go flying across my dorm room. The person using it was inexperienced at video games in general, but I made sure she put the strap on correctly. During Wii Sports, you end up making many physical motions, and in a confined space, you see just how surprisingly powerful some of those movements can be.

Essentially, make sure there are no chairs close behind you when you're playing Wii sports (especially bowling) because if you accidentally hit your hand while moving the remote, given the correct angle, the Wii remote will probably go flying regardless of the strap. That, and make sure the strap is tight around your wrist.

Otherwise, getting hurt or breaking stuff with a Wii is a combined inexperience, stuff in the way, perfect conditions, lack of common sense kind of thing, which I don't believe is much of an issue, given people follow the general guidelines that the games give to their users.

Wii sports says to make sure there isn't anyone or anything around you'll bump into as soon as you start, for a perfect example.

VG Staff or a volunteer will be present at all times the game room is open...so...

We may just poke people lightly who go totally psycho with a Wii controller. Everything that is in the game room is someone else's stuff, so it would be pretty bad karma to smash some random fur's Wiimote!

I'm keeping mine in my hotel room. No sense worry about someone I don't know breaking it, or to a lesser degree of badness, messing with my Miis. Also, worrying about batteries, unless whoever brings a Wii to the game room has the battery recharger doodad.
