permalinkOkay What about metal???
And I am not talking about the new stuff. Well some of it is fine. I am talking about the stuff that really rocked and was fun, not political. (Not alternative.)

if you like metal, perhaps you would enjoy my radio station, i am working in putting all 3700 some songs into the playlist, but for the most part it revolves around Metallica Dragonforce and Gwar and a lot of other random stuff, very VERY random stuff at times... http://75.133.82.3:9000

You won't be let down.
I try to avoid dictating what any of DJs will play, but I can say with some confidence that there will be a decent variety of music this year. Trance, House, DnB, Techno, Industrial, 80s, and more..

Personally I will be playing trance music. I don't know about rave, but some of it probably borders on hard trance. Mostly progressive/melodic stuff. A tad harder than or on par with yer average Armin Van Buuren set (most likely, anyway). I'm considering mixing it up with a little bit of breaks though, because I love Hybrid.

Trance: hipnotic effect, that was asociated to "chamanic" rituals and other socials manifestations. Example: when people dance samba in Rio, this people are in trance.
in trance state, people can do thing that in other situation not could do. WHAT I SAID???!!!

permalinkSounds like a Goa, or Psy trance style, which are soem of my favorite trance styles. I also favor Vocal Trance.
Long as you stay away from the drum n bass and the overly repetitve tunes, I think we'll be good and I'll enjoy your set.
Hopefully I'll be bringing the tunes to teh crowd one year.

Ah, do you have any more information on what particular industrial bands will be played, and on which nights of the rave? Kinda hoping for Front 242, Front Line Assembly, or KMFDM, and the like.

It's too early to make any anouncement regarding programming, including the dance schedule.
That being said, the tentative plan is to have a dance on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Traditionally Thursday has been 80s, and Friday/Saturday have been Electronic and Dance, but things may be different this year. There'll be a 'finalized' schedule later in the year (Much closer to the convention dates).

Most likely, the closest you'll see to metal would be industrial; Though the hard stuff doesn't get played much in a dance environment.

I think in some ways this is akin to a request for a jazz dance or a country hoedown in the sense that, that's not really the kind of thing they're going for, hm?
But if you can dance to rock music... more power to you.. I just don't know many people who can or would x3

permalinkhey the country portion of my dance set at FWA had the floor filled and spirits high so
Don't assume what people want. The techno and rave dances are historically the most poorly attended, (though i like this style of music)
The 80's dances and the campy fursuit music, top 40 dance and pop dances are the most popualar.
also there are plenty of danceable rock songs, you just need a DJ that can blend and pick good tunes

Seriously? Well, call me suprised
I was kind of expecting the opposite. Then again, I've not yet attended AC
I'm not saying no rock ever is dancable, but it's not going to get slipped into the techno sets in all likelihood...
If anything I could imagine the reason for the general dances' popularity being that almost anyone could go to those and have a good time, probably, but for the electronic-dance-music sets there's a bit more of a sense of having to be into that kind of music to really get into them and enjoy them fully. Electronic music never seems to have the same mass appeal, sadly. But I guess that's why it's the 'Top 40' dance and not the 'Generally Obscure Music' dance ;p
I guess though what I don't get is that, I would have an incredibly hard time dancing to music not geared specifically towards dancing. There's plenty of trance and house music I don't even consider dancable. That's just my POV though, and obviously doesn't reflect most people's view of what is and isn't dancable. So for me, I could never concievably dance to most Top 40 music.. but if that's what others like to do, they shall do it! And I will make no furthur complaints on the matter.

At AC the highest attendance has always been during the electronic music dances. I think his statement was referring to other conventions.

permalinkeven AC...rory seems t have mor people then any of the rave dj's, and the 80's dance was almost standing room only back at the adamsmark. So my experience did include AC. corse thsiu si based on how busy the dances feel not nessicarily any actual counting going on. ANd i couldn't stand the dances last year for a multitude of reasons apart from thusdays i stopped in but between the darkness, reverb, loudness, and musical seelctioin i quickly left.. so maybe last year was differnt, not sure.

While I _like_ listening to the techno, trance, and other electronic "dreamscape" music, be it and endlessly pulsing, bone-shaking boom or artfully modulated white-noise, or even Morton Subotnik (yeah, I'm old) - the fact is that I can find that to listen to anywhere, anytime here in Los Angeles. In fact I bet anybody living in a town of population 50,000 or thereabouts can find a station or a club where it gets played, and if there is a college or university in town, it almost can't be avoided...
...But it isn't particularly Furry. There is no reason that it should be a specialty of AnthroCon, almost to the exclusion of any OTHER type of music.
Now this is stuff that you can pretty much ONLY hear at a furrycon - or, at least, you ONCE could; some of the best fursuit dances of AnthroCon, Further Confusion, ConFurence, and other conventions historically featured these songs, and - at hotels where other events and other guests were gathered, sometimes the other, non-furry hotel patrons would be HAPPY to join in, let their hair down, and have FUN.
So - am I given to understand that AnthroCon's dances will no longer feature anything EXCEPT Techno, Trance, and Electronic Fusion music?

"Now this is stuff that you can pretty much ONLY hear at a furrycon"
You mean to say you can only hear top 40 and 80's music at AC?
Maybe you should switch radio stations with me. All the radio stations in the Detroit market play Top 40 and 80's music, all the time. The only time I ever hear electronica is on my MP3 player or computer or, the one time I did actually go to a club.
"So - am I given to understand that AnthroCon's dances will no longer feature anything EXCEPT Techno, Trance, and Electronic Fusion music?"
Nah, there's still the fursuit/80's dances just as always.
I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I feel the exact opposite of you on this. I've rarely ever had the chance to hear electronic music played by a DJ. But it seems like every time I've been in the company of a DJ it's either been Hip Hop, 80's, or Top 40.. or all of them combined.
Ah well, different perspectives. I guess my view is that electronic music is really the most dancable; in fact, it's specifically designed for that purpose a good deal of the time.

permalinkfor the msot part.... Drum n Bass, industrial and hard house are not dancable, wehre it's just endless beats thrown at you at 120-250 bpm, which si what the majority fio electroncia dances get turned into. i love techno, danceabel techno, goa, vocal trance, 80's tecno remixes stuff you can hear on BPM on XM
Anthrocon generlaly strikes a decent balence between styles, you're bound to hear somthing you like atleast one of the nights. It's not all abotu Genra, it's abotu dj's playign good songs IN the genra and knowing how to lead in to and out of a set and nto sound like an mp3 player on suffle

While you may personally not enjoy dancing to these styles of music, hundreds of people every year at the dances suggest that statement is not accurate.

permalinkVery true
It all depends on how one looks at it and what others around the world thinks of us or rather considers as danceable.
Speaking of dancing or what is danceable. Dance itself is as unique as to it's counter part the music, featuring many types and styles as well.
The secret is in you.....

I've been booking the DJs and planning the dances for Anthrocon for several years now. While I'm grateful and appreciative for all of the input and feedback, I find it counter-productive for people to make declarations of what is most popular based on personal taste or limited observation.
The dance formats exist currently as they are because this is what is most popular for folks who want to dance. That includes all kinds of electronic music. Something I try to do every year is ensure enough variety so that everyone hears something they can dance to.
So - am I given to understand that AnthroCon's dances will no longer feature anything EXCEPT Techno, Trance, and Electronic Fusion music?
Below is the DJ line-up for 2007. You can rest assured that I will continue to strive for variety in the dance formats every year, while paying close attention to what will keep the dance floor busiest.
80s and Retro:
DJ Butterscotch, DJ Alphawolf
Fursuit friendly:
DJ Rory
Electronic:
DJ Tek-Fox, DJ Rigel, DJ Genki, DJ Draconum, DJ Ironheart, DJ Tails

Specifically, for the interested, I will be playing trance/house music, Ironheart will be playing Industrial, and Tek-fox (to my understanding) will be playing Drum'n'Bass. That's already a variety for concerned individuals, and there's three other electronic DJ's playing
There's bound to be SOMETHING that any person can dance to at some point. I don't think anybody should really worry. And, well, besides... this isn't the whole point of the con anyway (but great if you're into that sort of thing!).

permalinkI am a local show booker here around PGH and we were looking at putting together a fursuit-friendly hard rock show at a local venue. Would this be something of interest to any of you?
Not trying to draw away from your Con entertainment, but maybe there are some adventurous rock-N-roll people that would want to break out for a night, explore the city, and check out some cool bands, while rockin their fursuits.
We tried to get this together last year, but the Con came and went. This would be live rock bands with an anthropomorphic theme or at least some anthro leaning. There are a few cool ones around PGH. Probably free entry if you are wearing a fur suit or something...who knows?
This would probably take place at some downtown music club that books live bands and would be just a short furry cab ride away from the con center.

Actually I kind of refering to somethign a little harder that you wouldn't necissarily mix but play straight up. As for the dancing... I kinda meant more mosh/headbag/thrash about wildly running into everyone.
I guess it would have to be a seaprate event, I can't quite see metallica or hatebreed played inbetween techno. OH well I guess, maybe next year.

Our dances are meant to be dances and not mosh pits. If people get hurt at Anthrocon it is a BAD THING(tm), so inviting them to run into each other would be a terribly bad idea.
