I'm considering offering a beginning sculpting panel, BUT there's not much point in offering the panel if there's no interest! 3-D art takes up a tiny fraction of the art show space, and part of that is actually masks. Masks are not an area I'm versed in.

It would be a quick overview of some of the fundamentals like building armiture, some basic tricks for creating specific textures like fur, special effects, and some fundamentals of painting the items once its done. (painting a lumpy object is very different than painting on the flat!)

So, is there any interest in a getting started in sculpting panel?

If there's sufficient interest in panel at all, I'd like to find a sculptor that works in Sculpey to sit in on the panel. I don't use Sculpey (I've tried it, didn't like it) but it is one of the more popular materials. ApoxieSculpt (what I use) and Sculpey have completely and totally different technical specs. Sort of like the difference between using oils and watercolors. Differences in material produce very different results! If you're just getting started, knowing what options are available is pretty important. Not every material will work for every artist.

I would love to go to a sculpture panel! I've been wanting to get into sculpture for quite a while, but was intimidated about the lack of knowledge floating around to help a beginner. A panel would be fantastic!

I think this would be a great addition to AC programming Smiling

Send a note to: so we can discuss

I'd love it too..particularly if you can find someone who uses sculpey, as that's what I use. But even still, it's the basics like armatures that I could relaly use the help on. Great idea!

The description for this panel is now submitted to programming. Since response was kind of tepid, I put in a low ball number of attendees. If you plan on attending this panel, please leave note so if it turns out we'll have more than 15 attendees, KP can put it in an appropriately sized room.

This panel is now in the schedule. It's not in one of the largest rooms, but I can still move it if the response grows.

I'm going to have this in a classroom style room so folks can sit at tables with their own Sculpey and work. If you're interested in the panel...PLEASE let Fenris know. He'll contact me if we need to put this event in a larger room.

I'm hosting the panel and I was worried the comment from KP would be misinterpreted.

THIS IS NOT A PANEL ON SCULPEY.

This is a panel on getting started with sculpture and techniques applicable to clay, sculpey, synthetic clays, paper clays, maches, and other soft workable materials. I won't really be covering carving either, though some of the parts on balance and strength may be applicable.

I don't work in Sculpey at all, so don't come looking for tips on baking it or dealing with its particular quirks. I will cover Sculpey's strengths and weakness compared to other materials as part of the section on picking the right material to work with, but will be covering several other materials as well.

If you want hot tips on using ApoxieSculpt, I'm your girl.

And yes, I will be covering how to get fur and scale textures. Not all of them will work with every material, but you should be able to adapt most of them.

Quick examples:
Standard fur texture, plus wool

Large scales

Long hair, plus super short hair

Haven't done anything with feathers so don't have any hot tips right now. I may have one ready for con, I might not.

Apologies for the comment there Fenris. Indeed it is a panel on sculpture, and I inadvertantly saw something with Sculpey in it..and just put it there.

A thousand pardons from an overworked programming puppy.

No problem. Sculpey is the material most frequently used for this sort of thing, so not surprising most people associate the two. It's sort of like hearing a panel is on "painting" and assuming you'll be working with oils on canvas... then finding out the presenter does frescos.

Thus why a good portion of panel will actually be on picking the right material for your needs. Smiling

I would be interested although I can never guarantee that I will be there. I often get distracted at cons... its those dang shinies. They get me everytime.

I was never very good at sculpture but when I started making fursuit heads my eyes suddenly opened. Whereas I used to not be able to see things in a lump of clay or block of foam, now i can.

So if the panel goes, i will try my hardest to attend.

The Beginning Sculpture Panel will be Saturday from 1 to 2:30 PM in the Butler Ballroom (at least according to schedule)

I'll largely be covering techniques like clay and mache which involving building up. If you're interested in techniques that involve carving items (wood, stone, clay), you may want to attend Thrashbear's "Woodworking as Art" which will cover subtractive techniques.

Or fi you're really new and don't know what 3-D medium you want to work with, go to both!
