Hiya! There's something that's been bugging me about Drupal's forum code for awhile now, and I was wondering if anything could be done about it. When users have signatures set here, instead of appending them during page generation like most forums, it adds them to the post/comment body itself when posting. This creates two problems. Problem #1, some users neglect to put spacing between their post and their signature, or in some cases, they don't even put their message on top of the signature. And, problem #2 (which is an extension of #1 in some cases), since the signature is indistinguishable in appearance from normal text, there's no way to tell whether the end of the post is a signature or an out-of-place tagline unless one reads multiple posts by the same person. This is also an issue with a lot of users not really understanding how to make a signature make sense in a system like this, but that's not something that can be solved by technical means.

So, is there anything that can be done about this? I'm not expecting the core signature behaviour to change, of course, but would it be possible to force a <div> or something around signatures so formatting could be applied? Just a decrease in font size and a bit of margin or padding would make a world of difference. At the very least, could a double-hyphen be forceably inserted before everyone's signature, similar to established conventions on Wikifur?

I know this is a somewhat minor concern, but the number of people who use their signatures incorrectly (for lack of better phrasing) combined with the fact that they look no different from regular posts tends to make a lot of forum posts/comments awkward to read.

I have no desire to fork Drupal Core at this time, especially with an upgrade to Drupal 6 just around the corner. Sorry.

Now if you want to contribute code to Drupal core, I don't think they'd turn you down. Smiling

[Edit: Well whaddya know, there's a module for Drupal 6 that does this! I'll put that on my list.]

Can it be made optional, or at least have the option when posting whether or not to include the signature, since I change mine depending on the circumstances and it's easy to edit if it's within the message?
