I was thinking.. god, all the t-shirts for AC so far have been *UGLY* ... no offense to you guys, but a big bruitish hitch-hiking pig isn't exactly what I want on my con shirt.. it sees the occassional use to sleep, and that's about it. What about a contest, similar to MFM and Eurofurence have? Let the con-goers get a little more involved in the t-shirts, and some extra exposure for our artists! Then people can all vote on what design they like best. Just my two cents :3 |

Perhaps last year's shirt requires some explanation. It was one of Scott Shaw's characters, called "Pig Iron". Since Pittsburgh is known for its steel industry, and it was our first year in the city, we figured that the two would go together nicely.
In years past, we would let the Guest(s) of Honor do the illustration for our conbook and t-shrit, though we do periodically evaluate alternatives. We'll keep the one you mentioned in mind. Thanks for bringing it up!

Actually..I've rather liked most of the AC t-shirt designs. And AC2005 had 2 shirt designs. The one with Kaze Ghost Warrior was so popular, completely ran out at the convention.

permalinkShoot who cares what the shirt looks like. Its from Anthrocon. They could put doggie doo on it, and it would still rock, because of where I was when I got it. Anthrocon is life!

I have to agree with many things said and dissagree with many other things.
I agree its Anthrocon and the convention itself makes it rock no matter how butt ugly the shirt is, but yes, as Korth said, I would prefer a much more interesting looking shirt. The Kaze shirts were nice looking, as were the Samurai cat shirts from 2003. The Usagi shirts were OK at best, but they did seem a bit cartoony for my tastes and I have to be honest that I haven't worn mine at all since I bought it. I never really had an interest in the character. I suppose if Id seen more of the character and had an interest in its creation, then I'd want to wear the shirt more. I'm actually wearing the Samurai Cat shirt right now and its starting to Shrink from so many trips through the washer and dryer. I half wish you would put out some more of them so I can retire this one and get a larger one.
You might consider having the Guest(s) do a series of pics and post them to the site with a voting option.

We already put a lot of demands on our esteemed guests: con book cover, T-shirt art, supersponsor artwork, and more. I am reluctant to ask them for even more.

Well, I must make an opinion here... in that whilst anthropormorphic pigs aren't my forté, I must still recognize the magnificent talents of Mr. Scott Shaw! I was ever so thankful to have my shirt autographed by him.

I know that I'm pretty much just a nobody, but I'd be willing to at least give a go at coming up with a T-shirt design if you made that aspect a competition of sorts among the various artists (Like the art and stories within the conbook). Prize could simply be a con t-shirt from that year.

I suppose it can be a delicate task to request a GOH to design a t-shirt - especially if they are not an artist.
Might it not be more prudent to ask the GOH - if they are an artist - to prepare a piece of art relevant to themselves and Anthrocon - and bring it along to be the show piece of the Charity auction?
Should the GOH be a non-artist you have the possibility of them bringing a piece of memorabilia from their profession instead, so either way you will have a great PR chance for the charity auction.
As for the con t-shirt - why not open the design up to the convention's attending artists professional or armature?
Once they know the year's theme they can have a deadline in which to submit a design, which would be shortlisted to say 3 by the AC board - and then shown online to give AC members the chance to vote on the winning design.
As kitwulfen says a prize could be offered to the winning designer.

Come to think of it, I think I'll frame my T-shirt and hang it up on my wall.
I am not a brown-noser!

I suppose I should confess that I was the one who made the original suggestion to Mr. Shaw! to use Pig-Iron on the shirt. I thought that with our move to Pittsburgh, it would be apropo. I'm sorry you did not like the design.
We'll see if what our esteemed guests come up with this year is a little more to your tastes.

*points accusingly* Now look what you've done! You hurt Kage's feelings! I'll bet he's all sad and depressed now.
*Illustration of Kage at this moment* ;.;
See? I told ya! ;D
I never mind any of the designs. The T-shirts are mainly for the memorabilia aspects. And I certainly wouldn't expect anything more from our guests of honor than they feel comfortable with. Though, I am curious if Rob Paulsen can draw... *imagines a sort of stick-figurish Pinky drawing with a big "Narf" below it* Snerk...

permalinkWith the latest nanotech available, maybe the shirt will have actual audio clips of Pinky saying Narf! LOL

FWIW, I liked the design (I was the one who brought CCAHAZC #1 for Scott to sign); belated thanks to your mom for keeping the store open so I could pick one up (took longer than I expected to pay for the art I won at auction).
A couple of tangential notes wrt Mr. Shaw!:
Is he coming back this year (and showing his (special furry edition of) Oddball comics)?
Did he ever post the con report he promised at http://www.oddballcomics.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=258&start=0?

permalinkDo you know if Tom Smith will be back this year. He was awesome last year. Shame more furs didn't go to see him.

permalinkIs that the Filker guy? If he is, the songs were incredibly funny and we could probably generate more of an audiance by word of mouth this time.

I should like to add my vote - that is, if anybody is counting - to the idea of a T-shirt competition, for the best design.
AnthroCon and other conventions, most noticably Further Confusion, have of late been drawing their Guests-of-Honor from outside of the "mainstream" Furry community, which has led to exposure of the congoers to a broader world of Science Fiction and Fantasy in general, and Anthropomorphic representation in particular. Each guest that AnthroCon has invited has been a treasure, and each has in turn been charmed enough by the association as to stand up for us when the subject of just what are those crazy Furries all about has been brought up.
Thanks to this move on AnthroCon's part, we are winning friends and influencing people.
However - trying to fit established characters into a convention theme, particularly if the congoers' exposure to that character may be somewhat limited, has been difficult; it has led to T-shirts which have appeared to be obtuse non-sequiturs, difficult to explain to other furfen, let alone mundanes, or to T-shirts depicting a well-known character, represented as travelling to (City hosting the event) for reasons obscure to any mundanes seeing the T-shirt.
And the designs have tended to lack a certain "punch" which most furry fans would like to have displayed on their person, something that says "I'm a Furry (Ask me about it)!"
We are thankful that your GoH's have been kind enough to submit T-shirt designs, and trying to come up with a design that pleases and fulfills everyone's ideas about what they might wish to wear is understandably difficult - but a T-shirt contest might offer a nice alternative, from a range of ideas and views and a gaggle of submissions.
I don't think that any of your Honored Guests would feel offended if "their" convention was memorialised with a T-shirt designed by someone else, addressing that year's theme.

Alternatively - have a T-shirt submission contest, and then ask the GoH's (all three of them, in the case of this year) to judge the winning design!
This gives the GoH's some creative input, while relieving the artist GoH of the actual chore of creating a design.
In any event, I recognise that it is a little too late in the year to do it for AC2007, but perhaps for AC2008, once the theme has been decided upon?
