I remember last year there was a lot of ruckus thanks to some guys who used extremely strong glue and removed the paint cover of the doors, and others furs thinking it was fun to remove and take the door numberings from the door...
so the question is...

Door signs will be forbidden again?

Dunno how tightly their doors seal, but if its like most (not super tight) those over the top door hangers work wonders for holding up signs, you can buy them or make your own from lots of different things.

actuall, near a shop next to the omni's park, they sell
transparent plastic-goo 3M glue, they work wonders, just to say these peeled perfectly and didnt damaged the door ( I was at the westing and a Dorsai and I removed the door signs )

Over the top door hangers? Can you dig up a link for me? I'd love to check into what pricing and other options are for them. Thanks.

THey aren't the cheapest things, but they work well and are reusable.
here are some at Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/s.html/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_k2k_2/105-2328974-8807656?ie=UTF8&keywords=door%20hook&index=blended
Also, you can make them out of cardstock type paper if you need cheap, and to uncover the peep hole just cut out the paper where it is

I tried that once XD

I personally think that instead of glue people should use adhesive gum .. it's usually not too sticky and does'nt rip paint of anything..

as for the over-the-door hangers , those can be bought at dollar stores..

This is one heck of a can of worms!

Can there be no alternative to all this? I've seen the door artworks and signs, and sometimes they're actually quite nice. But if you must advertise where you are, can it be done through the message board that is already posted up in the lobby? Or possibly extend the space for that message board and put up a "room" board?

I know a lot of people cling to it as tradition but if it is causing problems between the convention and the hotel, then maybe we should explore other options or abandon it altogether. This is a nice thing, but by no means is it worth the hassle on the best party in the world! It only happens once a year people go out and live it up! Smiling

im afraid I dont think the board is enought, even if its big, try cramping stuff from over 1000 furries in a 1 x 1 x 4 sized board ( If i remember last time, it was 4 blocks of 1m^2 each one..
and they were extremely cramped, and only let you use tiny paperblocks :|

I'm afraid that the issue did cause problems last year. The general manager of the hotel was extremely unhappy and decreed that he does not want any signs on doors at all this year.

We are still working on negotiations.

Uncle Kage works so hard for us! Thank you! It would be nice to be able to put our signs back up..I had a dry erase board up last year that didnt cause Anything to rip off, and all the furs on my floor LOVED to draw and sign it. I took pics of it before I'd wipe it off in the morning..they seemed to like it ^_^

Okay round two!

Crazy idea here. Why not get a long, wide piece of cardboard? I'm thinking around 3'x1'. Take 1' of the long end and bend it perpendicular to the rest of the board. Slip that "base" under the door and stand the rest of the 2' leaning *gently* against the front of the door? Now you would have a medium for your pictures and artwork in front of the door without having to hang or secure anything to the door...directly. Adjust the size as needed of course.

Okay, I know that doesn't sound all that great and suffers from some obvious problems but just hear this out. When you're about to open the door (from the inside), put your foot on some of the cardboard sticking out from under the door and use that to secure the board while you open the door. And keep your foot on that board as you're closing the door to keep your display in front of the door.

What do you think? Worth a try? Better than nothing?

I think having something on the floor under the door might incite safety issue concerns with the hotel staff.

Also, i'm given to understand that it isn't up to their standards of appearance. Hotels, especially once as nice as ours, like to keep everything looking all pristine and professional, and they feel like door signs make the hotel look more like a dorm, which they don't like. Which is where the negotiation comes in.

Have faith--if there's a way to put up door signs that meets the hotel's needs, our staff will do their best to clear it for us. I'm sure they're exploring or have explored every possibility they can think of. *snugs the negotiators*

Good points. I say it's time to abandon the whole subject and just enjoy the con! This is a very silly point to get in the way of enjoying the grander scope of the con.

And am I the only person here who forsees quite a few problems with people who don't actually check up on the forums? Something tells me that during this AC we're going to have a few people getting in trouble for signs hanging anyway.

*shrugs* Meh. Door signs are nice but IMHO not an OMG we es doomed!!!111oneoneeleventy|||. We’re still building a relationship with this hotel. Heck we are only starting to build it. I know a few people who have a 10+ year relationship with their hotel. My guess is they are suspiciously optimistic about us. *shrugs again* Relationships take time to grow. My guess is we will probably get the signs back eventually but it probably is going to take time.

As always....IMHO since I'm still a wet behind the ears when it comes to this whole con..ven.tion thing.

But you're right .. it'll be the second year we'll be using that hotel ..

So people should behave ..
Not having the right to put signs on hotel doors is normal in my opinion anyway .. they're a four star hotel .. they don,t exactly want to look like a college dorm .. which is understandable..

and please .. I think it's better to NOT do anything in disfavor of the hotel like .. er.. removing those pretty number from the doors or any brilliant idea some people can come up with when they forget to use their common sense..

Basically , act your best so that the con can biuld itself a strong good reputation..

My roommates and I were thinking a doorknob hanger. Like a "do not disturb" sign, but with character art on it instead.

Would that be okay? (It's no big deal if it's not.)

}I agree, the doors looked more like a mixture betwen plstic composite and compressed shreded wood..

heheh .. no ..

This ain't a motel Eye-wink

Metal for doors is not very chic ^^;

but like it's been said .. it's not only the point of not ripping paint off..

I understand the hotel may not want the place to look too much like a dormitory ..

I would hope that when you sell out the hotel 6 months in advance, hotel management might not worry so much about the way things look for a few days, as long as everything remains tidy, serviceable and in one piece.

and having friends in the construction business, I have seen some very nice steel doors that look like fine wood.

Oh! I believe you .. but since it's 4 stars and all .. they're too stuck up to accept faux-wood inside their hotel Eye-wink

Gotta remember its not just us selling out the hotel. The rest of the convention center also gets to share the hotel, and I would be willing to bet that the bigger halls can reserve bigger blocks of rooms. Either way, we don't sell out the hotel, just our block. Which happens for almost any convention I would imagine

Let me offer another way of looking at the issue:

You go to rent an apartment. This apartment is in a very nice building with many amenities. The rental agreement specifically says you may not alter the exterior of the building or your apartment in any way, including not putting anything on your door and keeping a specific type of mini-blind (provided by the apartment complex) for your windows. To further add to the scenario, the apartment normally rents for over $2000 a month, but you've been allowed to rent it for only $800 a month, and your lease allows you to have up to 3 roommates should you want to share the expense.

Given this scenario, would you hang something on the door when your landlord and rental agreement specifically tell you not to? I certainly wouldn't.

Negotiations are underway to see if something can be worked out, but if the hotel requests that you not hang any signage on your hotel room door, then we shouldn't do it.

This is still being negotiated? Wow, I must say the diligence is greatly appreciated, I honestly didn't expect this much time to be spent on it Smiling

I am a bit curious, though, as to whether we'll know something before the con starts?
