Buddy List

Alright, somewhere on this thing is supposed to be a buddy list. I'm pulling my ears out trying to locate it with no success. If anybody knows what I'm talking about or can confirm it's been removed for some reason or another I'd appreciate it, thanks.

Buddy List

The buddy list isn't dead, it's resting. Eye-wink Here's what happened:

Back in September, I upgraded the website from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6. One of the "fun" things about doing an upgrade across major versions of Drupal is upgrading all of the third party modules that are installed. This site currently has between 20 and 30 third party modules.

Normally, it's not a big deal to upgrade the modules. But, since these modules aren't part of Drupal Core, just because Drupal 6 exists doesn't mean that a version of the module for Drupal 6 also exists. See where this is going? Smiling Yep, the creator of the Buddylist module decided that he couldn't be bothered to write a Drupal 6 version of the module. Unfortunately, we got what we paid for.

That said, I've been eyeing up a replacement module that does something similar, and more. (imagine being able to "pair" up with folks that you're sharing a ride or room with. The new module will make that a reality.) I've installed the module on my testing machine, and it works great. It's just a matter of setting aside a few hours one weekend and installing it on this website. When I do that, I'll post an announcement on the front page and on our Twitter feed.

I hope that helps explain where the buddylist went, and when/how it will be coming back. Smiling

It's a way to connect with others. Like friends on LJ or Facebook.

Buddy List

yes but in practical terms what does it entail? Do I see special links when said person posts something on the forums or something ? Or is just a name added to a friennd list on the site?

Not currently, no.  At some future point I may fix that (in my copious spare time, haha!) or perhaps write some code to generate a friend map or something.
