I know it would not be AnthroCon without fursuits. But what of the idea of making something that may not necessarily look like a furry at all? I have a costume concept that is a spinoff of a monster in a popular rpg game. Yet this monster does not have ears, eyes, a nose, or feet. It has a goofily large mouth, a big body, and is covered in scales/fur (still deciding). Would such a costume be eligible for AC? Or would I need to have it reviewed to get a solid answer. The reason I am asking is I don't want to start working on a costume that would be ineligible to attend. Also. What is the maximum size a costume could be? I have seen raptors with really long tails. I have seen big bodies costumes that could jam a small elevator. Yet these costumes were allowed because they were fun and different. What is your stance on large costumes? And what is the limits one could expect for such a costume? Fastenjaw |

Well, being a monster and having scales and/or fur may make it eligible under the 'furry' category. However, lacking a mouth, hands, feet, eyes, etc may make it ineligle as it is not anthropomorphic, (having human qualities). I'd leave it to Kage to make the final call, although I doubt it draw any serious objections.

My guess would be you can wear anything you like as long as it's not offensive and doesn't leave any naughty bits hanging out.
There's a stormtrooper that shows up at a lot of furry cons I've been to. No one's going to get after you for cosplaying as a non-anthro character.
As for size, have you ever seen the robowolf? I think he's about 9 feet tall.

What Marymouse said. Costumes must not be unacceptably revealing.
The robot is Mechwolf. Here's a pic.

permalinkThere was a good bit of laughter when that guy passed the oped door of the room I was in. I forgot what event I was at but I did see that costume before. Quite amusing I must say =D And you gotta love the comical size too! This brings a bit of an interesting consideration. He is metallic. Another con I saw pictures of also had Halo's Master Chief sporting a pair of ears and nothing else... And that purple furry eater fish thing regularly attends (lol I love that costume)... It looks like there are a few non furry costume goers. IMO just because something may lack a tail or a canine/feline nose or lack the look of an earth like animal doesn't mean it should be excluded from the con. I fully agree that inappropriate costumes should not go. But if something is comical enough and adds to the experience, and variety, I think it should be admitted. Now I do agree that if too many people start showing up in non furry themes then it does start to become a problem. The real problem is that the definition of a "furry costume" is just as broad as what makes something a vehicle. I guess it is weather or not something looks furry enough. Lets just hope the stictness isn't too bad as some con's have been. No costume maker can really try new fantasy themes without risking rejection from those places.

yeah, I dont think it matters what the costume looks like. Someone went as the purple furry eater one year running around trying to eat congoers. Was a funny little costume.

The real question is: How large are you thinking? Height should be kept within Doorframe heights. Width is also something you must consider. If your costume is too wide, you won't be able to get through the tighter/crowded areas. Length is also a factor. Stairs are going to be difficult if not impossible to manage, so you must be able to fit in an elevator.
I saw a wonderful Dragon at AC. The tail was HUGE and had a wheel for weight support. It also folded up so the dragon could fit in the elevator.
Visibility will also play a LARGE issue. There is a Shark that frequents AC (The only con I go to) that requires an escort because of limited visibility. The larger your costume, the more issues you will have. Just remember that you are going to be in a potentially very crowded situation.
Just out of curiousity, are you going as a Beholder or something?

permalinkThere is an enemy in Final Fantasy 3 that looks like a giant worm. I'll get the name if I can find a beastiary. That is what I want to go as. The design of what I have planned should have tremendously good visibility. I should be able to see everyone in every direction through the skin. So seeing is not an issue. The body is like a fat worm like tube that leads up to a circular base that I "drag" about using nylon strings tethered to a harness. I want to use scale textures but I dont know if I can find the right fabric. Construction is simple yet large. I would have to say about maybe 1 foot in every direction at the thickest from me. I am as thin as a pike so that is not too big I think. The hight is not very tall. Maybe makes me 7 foot tall at best. I have roughly 3 design's in my head. I want to build that costume because it has the best visibility of all my ideas, is the easiest to make, and is the most comical of all my costume ideas.

If there will be a tripping hazard, please make sure that you have a sufficient number of "handlers" while you are in suit.

permalinkYour thinking the one with the very long tail. This one has no tail. Look at this one. But note this one is a bit too wide from what it will really look like.

permalinkOh and about that shark fursuit... I saw it and let me just say that I feel that it was a bad design. Anyone could have easily made the mouth with a black see through screen at the dark part of the mouth. This would have had a trememdous boost to vision. Then the only thing you might want to have an assistant is for the tail portion since it could hit people.
I dont plan on having the costume that fat. Think more of a large tube with a mouth at the end. I would want good vision in any costume I make first. I just dont like the idea of only seeing through a hole the size of a pea. Hope I can get some feedback on this soon.
