One thing particular about the furry fandom is that there is so much diversity, that you will never get a real clear and concise answer to this question.
Furry means a lot of things to a lot of people. You can go all out, having a closet full of fursuits.. you can have a multitude of fursonas.. have a ton of artwork, both G, PG, R, and Mature rated..
Or you can just have one piece of art.. something cute, not adult or mature.. just cute. Or you could just like movies like Disney's Robin Hood.
Thing is, you don't need to have a spiritual totem of an animal or make animal sounds in public in order to be furry.
If you have an interest in furry animals, or an interest in anthropomorphic art.. or shoot, have a fascination with some of the ancient gods and goddesses in greek or egyptian mythology (Anubis, Bast, or Pan..), or even just enjoy going to a furry con cause you can associate with the people who are there, than that is plenty enough.
"just how furry do you need to be?" -- I think it would be better if you asked yourself: "Do I feel furry or associate with the furry fandom?"
If the answer is yes, then that's your answer. **smiles**

permalinklol thanks. It's just i know i like catgirls. just a simple pair or ears and a tail...maybe even mittens and bells. and i always thought that was true anthro up untill i heard about people with the suits....then i started to doubt if I could truly be part of the furry fandom. Thank you for helping me get back int the swing of things. *^-^*

Catgirls?
CATGIRLS ?!?
Oh, some of our better artists, and our earliest artists, are _very_ fond of catgirls.
Bryce Nakagawa makes a living with anime-style catgirls.
Fred Patten, our Furry Fandom Historian, must take the blame for introducing Anime Catgirls to North America, and helping to make them widely available to the masses.
There are some who may make derisive comments obout catgirls, and sort of sneer contemptuously at the very idea, but trust me - anime-style catgirls are _very_ much a reason to be a Furry Fan. There are too many Old Guard Furries, and too many young fans of Anime, for them not to have a place here...
...except for collectors of "Hello Kitty". We don't speak about THEM here...

As someone else remarked, you can literally ask 10 different fans what furry is... and get 12 answers.
There is no "club". You decide your own level of involvement. It's like being a sports fan. Nobody really decides that but yourself.
I hope that helps clarify things a little.

My smartass answer would be if you have hair and are classified as a Mammal IRL then you can be a fur. Anyone can be one, whether it's a spiritual connection, fan of the artwork, escaping from reality, sexual kink, like watching people walk around in animal costumes, pretty much whatever floats your boat. As long as you are open-minded, and generally a nice person you'll be ok. I mean, who are we (furries) to laugh at a 'human' for being what they want to be.

permalinkYou have to be furry enough that a look at a sample schedule for the con has events that interest you.
That's it. You have to be furry enough to enjoy the con.
And furry enough that you don't have a panic attack when
seeing a fursuiter walk around or pose for pictures, and
won't freak out if someone has a piece of furry art in front
of you.
I'm really not much of a stereotypical furry, and I have fun.
