Facepainting, Bodypainting, and Costume Appliances Panel
Good Evening,
I am polling to see how much interest there would be in a Facepainting, Bodypainting, and Costume Appliance panel at Anthrocon 2010. I made the suggestion during last year’s convention, but haven’t seen anything pop up on the forums here about it. I am willing to teach what I have learned, but I only have 2 years experience and no formal training, I just do what I like. Topics on interest for body/face painting I would or would like to see covered would be:
- Different types of body/face paint
- Methods for application- brush, sponge, airbrush, etc.
- Where to buy and what to buy for paints
- What to use for cleaners and how to clean up
- A standard self painters kit
- Does and don’ts for body/face painting
- Why paint instead of fursuit
Topics on interest for costume appliances, such as foam masks, ears, contacts, fangs, and other Items I would or would like to see covered:
- Products available on the web
- How to apply foam appliances
- How to custom paint foam appliances
- DIY dental molds (for people doing fangs)
- How to care for your Costume Appliances
This is just an idea at this point, and maybe I’m biting off more than I can chew, but I invite anyone with interest (or hopefully more experience) to let me know. If something else has already been scheduled to cover some of these topics please let me know. Thank you for your time.
I'm interested myself, given that I now have a blank Lyonshel feline mask.
Would be interested in this, unfortunatly I won't be attending until next year. So I will wish you luck for this year.
I'm no artist, but I'd definately volunteer as a blank canvas! Maybe some of the people your teaching could paint up some stripes on me!
I wasn't looking to paint the general audiance, just a few people I bring along with preset patterns. I can just imagine how long this will be with 'make me look like this character!', and the amount of paint that would have to be used with a workshop of just 20 would be a bit much. saving it to be just the techniques used and to build interest is the most I'd want right now.
Has this idea been discarded?
Nope but I am trying to bargin a 2 hour time slot sometime before sunday. I've also requested it sized for about 30 people, since some sound interested but there hasn't been an overwhelming flood of "oo ooo I'll go i'll go!" We'll see how that pans out with fliers.
Thank you for all that attended, we had around 16-18 that wandered in. I have also posted up the material for the class up on furaffinity.net under my name, here are the direct links:

Powerpoint presentation: pending release agreement from the image donators (I only got the use of their images cleared for the presentation, not for distribution).
Next year I will try a few different things if I attend again:
- less lecturing from me, I know is never fun but its hard to get everyone up to a common understanding. I will attempt to improve it some how
- possibly have pre-signup for facepainting (no full body nor prosthetics) on agreed upon designs. We ran over time doing 2 demos in addition to our own, and part of it was trying to figure out the design
- split out the face painting class and the prosthetics class. The 2 hour time frame was reportd to be too long by most, even though there wasn't anything scheduled.
Please feel free to leave any comments
Trying to bring this back agian this year, but I think I want to try a few things different.
I'd like to make this more of a workshop than a lecture. I know its not entertaining to just listen to someone talk about this or that for too long. would attract more peopel to be able to come in and learn how to face paint your particular fursona? I would only be able to do certain designs and no prostectics, but If I recieve submissions early enough I could see about making out a step by step tutorial for it.
Also, if there are an other body painters or face painters that would like to help host please let me know! I've already roped my GF into this, but finding other painters with a bit more experience would be a great addition.
I would be so into coming to that panel and learning!
I do face painting as a hobby (on myself, my family, and neighborhood or church events as a volunteer), and sometimes use prosthetic ear tips and noses for myself. I don't think I'm all that good (although the kids are always happy) and I'd love to learn better techniques!

I'd attend, schedule permitting. Used to do face/bodypaint myself back in the days of my youth. (Now I wear a shirt and tie to conventions
)
