Sketchbook size.
I'm planning on taking a sketchook to this years con and seeing as it's the first time doing so, would an 11x14 be a good size?
Thanks dude.
Given my lack of art skills/talent, it's for other artists to draw in.
Get whatever you can carry comfortably, and don't expect the entire page to get filled up.
I wont. XD I just wanted to make sure that the artists will have enough space to draw comfortably.
Figure a standard 8 1/2 X 11 book would be perfect...It's a page size that most artists would be used to working with. Besides, an 11 X 14 book gets really heavy...FAST
I'd keep it in a bag that I can carry on my shoulder, so that wouldn't be a problem. But I get what your saying.
To tell you the truth I am not so much a real artist but for me when I draw I could draw on anything some of my best work comes from bordom so it will be on what ever scrap of paper I have... so in other words I think no matter what size, they will just draw smaller if they need to
True, but I think it would be more comfortable when you don't have to cram things in a small space....No pun intended. XD
Your very much correct, I simply mean that I do NOT carry my SketchBook everywhere I go, and that 'artists' are good at working with what they have, I am sure no matter what you take it would work for them as long as you alright with holding it all day, thats why I just stick to the regular 11x8.5 sketchbook
is it true, that you can tell alot about the artist by the size of there sketchbook ?
Sharky
Hmmm. I don't know. XD
It is not the size that matters, it's how you use it.
*rimshot* XD
Most artists will be just fine working in an 11x14 sketchbook. I have several sketchbooks ranging from a 4x6 to 8.5x11, and have seen quite a few 11x14 and even larger sizes at conventions.
However, some artists may charge increased prices to draw in such a large sketchbook; do be aware of this. I'd recommend no more than one super-size sketchbook, and further one(s) at 8.5x11 or smaller.
I'll keep that in mind.
Remember that a lot of artists like to have their work scanned and sent to them, and many people like to keep an electronic copy of their sketchbook images. It's easiest to scan an 8.5x11 book.
Good point. It's much easier to scan the smaller sized paper.
Many artists like to draw on the 8 1/2X 11 size, so if you're concerned with what would be more appropriate for a sketchbook in general, the smaller is best.
I'll admit, drawing in 11 X 14 is more pleasurable for me (it's my standard sketching size--in fact the bigger the better). Bigger paper gives me more freedom to move my arm around the whole page instead of just my wrist and it doesn't restrict the artwork as much. Plus it looks more impressive! Macro-art=8)
(Sorry, I thought you were talking to me. ^^; )
I see. I already ordered the 11x14 last night however and I don't think I can cancel. Hopefully it wont be too much of a problem.
That last thing I'll say about presenting an artist with a 11x14 sketchbook... don't expect full sized sketches automatically. Normally, artist will charge a more for a 11x14 sketch than an 8.5x11. If they do a full page size sketch and don't charge you more, then its a bonus, just don't assume they will.
If this is the norm, then I should charge more! Thanks for the advice...just kidding
That wont be a problem.
I'm planning on writing a notice saying "The sketches do not have to fill the page." or something like that. Basically the sketchbook will be for all sketch sizes up to 11x14.
It's all good! I was kidding anyway.
Like I said before, the bigger the better! Just glad you have an 11X14" book. So much nicer...
I am glad. Still, I'll make the notice. Just in case.
If you have a Barnes and Noble bookstore, or any kind of art supply store in your area, you can always find a smaller sketchbook if you desire. Otherwise, you shouldn't worry about the size you have. If any artist has an issue about the 11X14" size, just ask for a sketch that they'd feel comfortable making in your price range. Hope this helps!
Indeed it does. Thank you.
Regardless of whichever size sketchbook you decide to buy and carry, be sure to WRITE YOUR NAME on the inside cover, along with as much contact information as you can provide - e-mail address, home mailing address, phone number, etc.
If you have a specific theme or character description for your book, also make a note of it, either in the front, or a notice referring artists to a character description in the back.
It would also be a good idea to have a loose sheet or two, which can be inserted underneath the next blank page, to act as a blotter for colored marker pens; this protects the following pages of your book from suffering "bleed through", preventing staining of pristine, otherwise-fresh blank pages.
Got ya. I've been meaning to find out what needs to be added. Thanks for clearing that up.
If you're a fan of Japanese animation, you might want to substitute a shitajiki (pencil board) for the extra sheets Vulpes suggested. These are images of anime characters and run about 6X9 inches, IIRC. The additional advantages are that they are stiffer and they're plastic-coated. This would also prevent the bleed-through Vulpes mentions.
That does sound pretty cool.
Having your name and email address in the book is ESSENTIAL. I know I had one artist who needed to take the book home, and when it got mailed back.. Somebody stole it off my porch, or so I believe. It ended up being found stuffed behind a bus stop, and the kind person who found it sent me an email to let me know they'd found it. Again, having contact information in your book is the key to getting it back if it is lost. There's no substitute.
Well now I know that will be the first thing I do when it arrives.

Well, I dont know about anyone but I use 11''*8_1/2'' but really I do not think it matters, if you are the one drawling then its up to you, if you are getting someone to draw in it, I don't think they would say 'no' but use the parts of the page that is needed for what they are drawling for you, you have to make sure its something you can carry around all day I think thats what would matter the most, but thats just me......
