Firstly, there's no requirement to have a badge beyond your Membership Badge. Everyone needs that one, everyone gets one with their registration. But being creative folks, furries often seek something... more. You can create one yourself with your own artistic skills, use images from SecondLife or other sources, but many people commission illustrated Fursona Badges. It's often a way to get a picture from a favored artist, and there are those folks who get a fresh badge at every convention. (and then there's Orion, and.. well.. we'll cover him for Buying Your 1000th Fursona Badge.) If you're making your own, this guide may prove helpful in designing it.

The rates vary based on size, color, and artist; $20-40 is considered reasonable for a typical color badge as of 2010, though prices will range. Most artists will have lamination capability or clear plastic holders for protection, as well as badge clips or simple lanyards for attachment. Others will simply draw you a badge-sized illustration and leave the protection and attachment to you. Some artists will sell the holders, or laminate someone else's artwork for you, for a modest fee. There are also badge buttons, sculpted badges, and other variants.

Now, the badge itself can range dramatically in size- measured in inches, the most common ones are 2x3, 3x4, and 3x5. They're usually rectangular, though you'll see some 'contour' badges, where excess background is trimmed away; occasionally other creative shapes do occur.

The keys to a good badge are threefold: good art, good visual representation, good name.

#1: Good art. Well, you'll know this when you see this. Find an artist whose style you like, perhaps one known for drawing your species. "Your badge is neat! Who drew that?" is a frequently asked question at conventions.

#2: Good visual representation. This is a bit subtler. Your badge should visually tell people what your character looks like. Often artists will draw head and neck, or head and upper torso, for badges; this is a 'mug shot' that focuses on the most identifiable portion of your fursona. You'll want to specify if you want a full body badge. (For example, say your fursona is a centaur- how will anyone know if they don't see below the waist?) Artists are generally good about capturing your fursona from a verbal description, but bring a written one, or reference material if you want exactness. This is especially true if your fursona is a rare species, a hard-to-explain variation, or has specific and unusual coloration.

Also, consider props in the picture. If your fursona is an knight, tell that to the artist, so they can include armor, shields, or perhaps just a sword. If they wear glasses, dress like James Bond or Sailor Moon, like hockey, mention that as well. If they have superpowers- like magic, or fire rays shooting from their eyes- mention it. Remember there is only so much an artist can fit in on that badge, though! Consider what's most important about you and/or your fursona, and being able to get that across to others who will give a two-second glance to your badge. Clarity is more important than atmosphere.

#3: Good name. "Windstar Sharpfang D'zhmoul'ando" is going to occupy a lot of space on a badge; you might prefer to ask for for "Windstar", or even "Windy". Legibility is important, but that's the artist's responsibility to make it so. If you notice from extant badge work that the artist tends to use small lettering, though.. politely ask them to "Make the name on the big side". Especially in case of your first con, where you want people to be able to read who you are easily.

Once you have your badge, it's best to wear it as close to average eye level as fashionably possible. That way others can easily see and read it. For most people, that will mean clipped to your chest, on a collar on dress shirts, or on a lanyard. Attaching it to a belt, pants pocket, upper arm, or hat is fair, and a good place for a second or third badge. To shirtcuffs, costume tail, or shoes starts to get silly. On your underwear is right out.

On that note, do remember your badge will be worn in public spaces. Cheesecake/beefcake and mild adult humor are usually acceptable, but extreme violence, genitalia, and 'adult situations' are almost always inappropriate for a badge. If you wouldn't wear it on your shirt at a con, don't wear it as a badge. If you wouldn't wear it around your mom, don't wear it as a badge.

Fursona badges can also suffer wear and tear after.. well, wear. After the convention, it is wise to scan the badge to create a digital image of the artwork. You can then print out a copy, and then laminate and wear the copy. This will also let you send the digital image to the artist, who may wish to show it off online.

http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Conbadge has further reference on fursona badges. I hope this helps, and I welcome further recommendations or questions!

Take a turn through the Dealer's Room after you get there. See whose art you like (and can afford), and ask if they'll draw one for you. You don't need to have it right when you check in at the hotel.

(Then come see me at Essex Custom Leather -- I'll have leather and paracord lanyards for sale.)

Also you can take a trip through FA as well to see who's got preorders open that you can pick up at the con!

I'm on FA at furaffinity.net/user/sigilgoat and I can throw you a few recommendations if you'd like! C:

If you're on LiveJournal, the Anthrocon community will likely be flooded with people taking badge pre-orders for pickup at the con as the con gets closer.

I would recommend working out the details of the character in advance as much
as possible. In my case, the artist Holly Ann helped me with the first drafts
of my fursona. This included several emails back and forth discussing
clothing colors, design, and personality, including links to reference
pictures. ("Something like the suit in this pic" "something like this tie").

I've done the same working out visuals for fursonas with Captain Q.
Lots of artists could do this- so long as their art is good enough-
and they have the TIME to do so. That's why I recommend working on it NOW.
It can take over a month, a few minutes at a time, to work out a first iteration.
(I'm currently working on a 2nd iteration, because I've changed my opinions
and ideas over time.)

So long as you have some drafts, you can ask someone to do a badge.
However, they will want SOME kind of visual. In one case, I was able to say
"like this, but with THIS changed" and they had no problem understanding.
I also like to work with the artists' specialties, and leave them a little
leeway as suits their art. I specify what I need and let the remainder be
their discretion- even if it's small leeway. I don't know the artists'
strengths, but working WITH them is good if you can manage it.

Well, you could attach it to one of those deely-bobbers... Smiling

Though you do get my point. If you're a short person, badges worn on the collar or chest will be a lot easier a read than on the waist. Contrawise, if you're tall, waist-worn badges are more sensible than on a short person.

That's a matter of personal preference.

I've seen some folks get their name on the badge, so it's clear who is wearing the fursuit. Conversely, I've seen other folks get the name of their fursuit on the badge, so that people can recognize the person out of fursuit.

Likewise you can have one of each. That way while you are fursuiting you can wear your fursuit badge and when out of suit you can wear your other badge.

As Chiaroscuro pointed out, when commissioning an artist, clarity is definitely key. Some "obvious" things to remember are: species (you'd be surprised how many people forget this one!), fur/feather/scale colors, eye color, sex, contact informaiton, etc. Artists like to have short, clear descriptions rather than a novel of background they have to wade through.

What I've done is to make "commissioning cards" which I laminate and give to an artist so they have a snapshot reference of my character. These are the size of a business card and are easily handed out. While a card is NOT necessary, it can certainly help to pare down your description to the basics. Smiling

I personally suggest making a folder of references for any fursonas/RP characters/etc., and handing it out with your sketchbook; make multiple folders if you have multiple sketchbooks. Also might want to make a "Master" folder of all the folders again, just in case...since if one is lost, or all your sketchbooks are out, you still have stuff to show people who are interested. :>

When I went to RCFM this past weekend, I printed out a character ref sheet (a couple actually). If you can find a way to get one, I would suggest it, because Artists love them and it keeps them from writing down 500 details. People will do those, hell you can commission me if you want. I'll do it cheap. But I found it was very useful (especially since I made a point to buy a nice bit of art at RCFM). So yeah, that's another solution, but not necessary. My friend KC just described his fursona to the artist he commissioned and it turned out perfectly.

Speaking for the artists (I'm married to one) when you go to an artist only supply descriptives of your fursonia that will appear on the art. Fur pattern, eye color, collar detail, etc If you have examples of what they look like, that's great.

DON'T provide a history, mating list, iPod playlist, favorite foods, the real cool story about how they got that tattoo... while interesting it doesn't give the artist any information they can work with and just slows down the process. Unfortunately (or fortunately) AC is such a busy time for artists and time is limited and as anyone will tell you, time is money.

This.
We know you are excited about your characters and us artist want to do our best in capturing your character on papew, but we don't want to have to wade through a wall of text to get to the physical description.
If you are coming with only a text description in hand supply it as a list or bullet points as opposed to paragraph form.
Aside from species, color, cloths, etc A few words about personality or a small like/dislike list is also appropriate and often can supply inspiration for poseing.
Lest a meek character be portraied as a warrior or something simmiliar.
(which has happened to me before) :x

Protocollie did a good job describing what the differences in badges are.

Quote:
Con badges from Anthrocon are basically your 'ticket' to the event. Because it's so spread out, rather than a paper ticket, you wear a badge with your name on it so people know who you are and we know you paid the entry fee. That badge is generally about the size of a credit card, worn on a little tag, and is included in the cost of your registration.

Quote:
Badges by artists are a completely different thing - they're generally a piece of artwork that represents your character and has your name on it. If you don't have a suit (or even if you do!) but you want people to recognize you as your character, a badge by an artist is like a little sign you wear that says "hey! this is what I am!" They're not required to be worn at the con but most people choose to wear at least one.

The badges Chiaro is talking about in this thread and the one people do on FA are the ones described in the second paragraph, though they are sometimes referred to as con badges also.

Correct. 'Con badge' can refer to two things, while 'Fursona badge' refers to only the one; that's why that's becoming the prefered term.
