Okay guys I've had this idea for a while, and I think furries are just crazy enough to help me try it. It's a turn-based game for 4-40 players, each player being a "piece" on a massive chess board. On his/her turn, a piece may attack another player (using a simple Rock Paper Scissors combat with hitpoints), or use some "special ability" for that type of piece. depending on the number of players, it may only be a few "royal" pieces, then the pawns, then freelance assassins in the middle of the board. People in suit/halfsuit/whatever will get first dibs on piece choice ;3 I'm working on writing up the rules to the game now, but I wanted to know if there was any interest out there for this type of thing. THIS WILL BE EPICALLY AWESOME, SERIOUSLY. |

this could be very very interesting in my opionin, I wonder how many furs will join, cause I think I am interested in it only wearing my tail *sighs looks like I am gonna be a pawn ._.* oh well it does not matter I think I would be 95% sure on this ^-^

permalinkdon't worry, to make things even, pawns have attributes unavailable to any other piece ;3

Same situation for me most likely, with just a tail, but I'd be totally interested in this if it happens. It'll be so awesome!

Sounds like fun! You can count me in! This should be easy for I am full of win at R/P/S. Hit me up on AIM if you wanna chat. I'm fairly new and am up for meeting new people.

permalinkoh and another thing; this would take up considerable space, at least 25 square feet for the board, then enough room around it for people to walk around and any spectators (maybe I'm being overly optimistic about spectators ;P)
so, how would I go about making it a con event, maybe set it up in a corner in a game room?

You should fill out our Suggest-A-Panel form.
Also, have you given any thought as to where to get such a chess board? These don't exactly grow on trees...

permalinkI have. A rubber mat would work quite nicely I think (and help cusion players who like to act out deaths dramatically)

Hmmm...
Maybe '2 the Ranting Gryphon' and I could be the black and white kings, respectively.

permalinkThat would take the game from epically awesome to legendarily mega-excellent. I used the Suggest-A-Panel form, how long does it usually take to get a response ?_?

We cannot reply to all of the suggestions on the suggest-a-panel board. There are just too many of them. Rest assured that everything suggestion will be given its due consideration.

permalinkAh okay. I was thinking that some sort of "official" or semi-official support would help get more players! The board alone will have to go in two large boxes, which I don't mind having to pay to bring on the plane if I know I'm going to use it o.o

permalinkI've never been to AC before so I'm not sure where would be best... somewhere with a lot of space, but still with a lot of potential walk-bys and walk-ups?

count me in, but what would a red dragon with a collapsable 10 foot wing span be?
afterthought: my favorite piece in chess is the knight so i guess ill be a white knight if its alright with everyone

A real-time, interactive furry chess game... hmmmmm...
By the gawds this reminds me of playing all those rounds of chess back in high school, and I still love playing a game or two with my relatives whenever they fancy a visit.
Personally, this is an astounding idea, though I do imagine how time-consuming this'll be, plus the material and space required for a decent set-up of the board. Now, how would said 'special abilities' and hit-points come into play? In-my-humble-opinion, such diverse qualities ought to be limited, depending on how the game will be played out. ...And how do suiters get first dibs, mine won't be worked-on/completed until next year in March! (j/k'ing)
Safe to say, I'm intrigued, and willing to play this game.
Though, I'd be happy being a Queen/Knight/Rook/Bishop/Pawn [Interested pieces in descending order]. Hope to read more about this.

permalinkI'm glad to see this thread is still alive and there still seems to be plenty of interest for this!
As far as time-consuming, I've developed the rules to be as "quick-play" as possible. Material is 64 2x2 interlocking foam squares (I provide). Special abilities will all be one-time use, depending on the piece (pawns get 2 ability cards at the beginning of the game, bishops get 4, etc.) with the abilities themselves depending on the piece (bishops getting what you might call in OTHER games "cleric" type abilities, for example)
if you want to discuss this further, feel free to hit me up on AIM (ArdySqrrl) whenever :3

ya you got what i was thinking giza, i was thinking Uncle Kage as white king (if you dont mind me stating sir), and someone else as the black king.
afterpost: if 2 has time maybe he can be the black king

permalinkI'm not sure if being told exactly where to move would be very entertaining for the non-king players. I'd like to let each player choose his own actions. Of course, the kings can offer suggestions...

Put it up on the schedule, it's never been done before, and the 2 main players would tell us where to move, the acting would be hilarious.

permalinkYou put that on the Schedule, and I would watch for sure.

permalinkCareful, there's a few special abilities which pulls (willing) spectators into the game...

I've received the programming request form and am working on scheduling this event. So you should see it on the schedule grid.
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkI am guessing that it wouldn't be possible for you to post a Tenitive Schedule. I guess that would ruin the surprise. There could be some good out of it though, people could issue feedback on how it looks. Maybe give you ideas on how to improve it.
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkfew questions. When? Where and do you have enough people for this? ^.^ Id like to if I knew the details where it was taking place and how long the event was going.
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkWhen? I don't know, I gave a few "preferred" times, but ultimately it's out of my hands. I'd like to know just as much as you, trust me! I'm sure as soon as it's known, it will be posted in this thread.
Enough people? Well, the minimum I need is 16, which I'm absolutely confident I'll get...
The event should be done in under 2 hours, including setup and rule explainin'

permalinkDo you mean the rules of the game? I've entered the PLAYTESTING phase, and I still feel like I need to design a few more special abilities. If you want to talk to me via IM, I'm always happy to take suggestions |3~

Don't underestimate the time and energy it takes to put together a workable schedule. KP (and anyone else who might be helping him do this) have to wrangle 3 days worth of events into a pattern that accounts for those events' space needs, time allotments, and scheduling conflicts for planners while maintaining a balance of different event genres (art and fursuiting, for instance) in every time slot.
And once they release even a tentative schedule, a fair number of folks will start planning accordingly, even though it's tentative. And such folks often get cranky if you have to make changes later.
My brother the programmer once said that planning of this sort, once you add enough variables, becomes so complex that computers just can't do it. It has to be done by hand. Of course, that might just have been referring to bedroom assignments.

permalinkComputers can do anything with a sufficiently comprehensive algorithm ;3
Seriously though, I'll wait. I know you guys have a lot to plan out, so I'll see what time you give me

I thought so too, but apparently not. An awful lot, and certainly most things, but not quite anything, or at least not in the time frame you'd need it. *chuckles*
By my count, the gathering i often work with would need about 16 different variables for housing--some simple yes/no, and some with multiple options. More, if you allow that housing depends in part on the space arrangements of events, which are done separately.
My understanding from my brother is that a bunch of programmers once tried building an algorithm for housing/rooming arrangements into a computer, to see if it could be made to solve for it automatically (with a few adjustments for folks you know would never go together); the poor thing froze. *wrygrin*
Of course if that attempt happened more than a year or two ago, you might get different results now. It's not like computers are a stagnant area of development. *grin*

Would it be wise to figure out how many 'pieces' we have, and how many we need. So that people here don't get ousted by someone at the last minute, and so that we can see how many more people we need to be pieces.
Also, I think it would be best to have the Kings choose where the pieces go...would think less bickering would happen that way too.
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkThe game can be played with as few as 16 or as many as 48 players. If the game is really oh-so-popular that 48 isn't enough, then I'm always down for running an additional impromptu game afterwards or the next day.
Less bickering? White Pawn 5, decides where White Pawn 5 goes... People can make suggestions, but White Pawn 5 is the final authority on White Pawn 5 actions.

*shrugs* It's your idea and all I'm just thinking that two pawns could think that their move is better, and some people don't know how to play chess and would like to participate, and myself it's been so long since I've played I probably suck. One person controlling would also bode well for the strategy part of the game too..i'm just imagining all the pawns talking about planning moves...and the other side can hear them plain as day. Also for fursuiters, well they can't really talk well, or some don't want to talk at all in suit...
It was just a thought, but it's your idea so run it how you feel you should. I'll be there if it doesn't conflict with going to other things.

maybe the kings point out who gets to move next? like "Pawn6 you move" or something like that

permalinkUh. See my comment about "every piece moves in every round."
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkStrategy? Boo! This is about a group of people having a good time, not two people ordering around the rest of the board. If one perticular piece wants to follow the orders of his king without question, then that is up to him.
If it's been a long time since you played chess, it doesn't really matter... In "real" chess, only one piece moves per turn. In this, every piece acts in every round. The tactics involved will be quite different, and people trying to use traditional chess strategy without modification may find themselves at a disadvantage...
As for the issue with talking in-suit, I don't think it will be an issue, as long as each player can see where s/he's moving and can read the cards (which will be printed in big, friendly letters anyway). If some suit(s) don't have the visibility required for this, then they would have to be assisted in some way, which won't be a problem.
And of course, any suit that's too hot to be in for more than an hour probably shouldn't be played in...
