Volcanic Eruptions Disrupt Airtravel
Hi folks,
I'm sure you've all been keeping in with the news of the Icelandic volcano that has been throwing ash into the skies above northern Europe. This causes a fair amount of heartache for air travellers, as the ash, if sucked into a plane engine, is extremely dangerous.
At present flights from Scotland and Ireland are grounded, and more disruptions are expected in the coming weeks.
Although it's expected the disruptions will cease before Anthrocon is upon us, those travelling from the UK and Europe should be aware of the situation and be prepared to make alternative arrangements if the situation worsens. Check with your airline and travel agent for the best advice, and keep your eye on the news for updates.
In the meantime, I will leave you with one of my countrymen to tell you his opinion on matters;
Actually, I'll be flying in FROM Iceland. So everyone else should be fine.
It might be worth mentioning that eyjafjall isn't actually the volcano we were expecting to pop... There's a much, MUCH bigger one, called Katla that's way, way overdue for a major explosion. Can't wait to see what the rest of the world does when that one blows!
We'd probably nuke the site from orbit.
It's the only way to be sure.
I'm not sure that nuking a volcano 10km across, covered in almost a kilometer of ice is a smart plan...
I think the size of the nuke needed would mean that not only would you have ash and dust clouds, but also a massive cloud of nuclear fallout spreading across europe and canada/north america, thanks to iceland sitting quite happily in the point where euopean and american weather fronts meet ^_^
Better just to let it pop, then enjoy the show. Hell, come to Iceland, we'll get some snowbikes and a couple of helicopters then drive you up to the top to take some wicked cool photos!
Actually, that's a reference to the movie Aliens:
Awesome movie, BTW. If you haven't seen it, go buy the DVD. It's directed by James Cameron, the same guy who directed Avatar and Terminator 2.
Yeah, that's about how they ended the sitcom "Dinosaurs".
The rest of the world will be grateful they can pronounce it.

I think Denmark needs to go invade Iceland for what, the 5th time(?) and put that volcano in its place.
