I plan to go to the Anthrocon for the first time. Well, since it's in July, I MIGHT be able to go to the con if my parents agree. Problem is they don't know what furry is and I don't think they'd agree of taking me to a convention of people who dress up as animals o.0 But if I succeed, and one of them goes with me (preferably my mom), I would like to ask some questions: *If I were to travel, when would be the good time to arrive at Pittsburgh? (It starts on the 5th) *I would like to get a spot at the Artist's Alley, but at what time should I wake up and go to get a spot? *Since I'm obviously a minor, am I restricted from making mature art in the Alley? *How could I convince my parents? To address your Artists Alley questions:
* Artists Alley hours will be announced as the convention draws closer. We will be doing sign-ups starting 90 minutes before opening, and will hold a lottery for seats (if necessary) 30 minutes before opening. For more information, be sure to review the Artists Alley information page.
* As far as I'm concerned, minors and mature art do not mix in Artists Alley, whether purchasing it or making it. So that would be yes, you are restricted in that regard.

For arrival times I would suggest one of the two following options:
If you tire easily or are traveling a long distance/time:
Arrive the day before, so you can rest in your hotel room and whatnot. Though this will cost more (longer stay at the hotel, nourishment, etc...), it may be more convenient, but that's really your call.
If you do not tire easily or are not traveling very far:
Arrive the same day, A bit before 3pm for check-in (or earlier if you have things you want to do pre-con).

Hate to disapoint, but a *huge* majority of us don't 'dress up' like critters.
They just tend to stand out more than most for obvious reasons.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I know that since I'm a fur too :B Just that I was describing the usual point of view of some non-furs

Bring them along. Seriously. Pitch it to them as a vacation that they can take by touring Pittsburgh when not attending the con.
The Chairman's parents attend every year, and my parents have attended before as well. They've all had a great time at the con.

I have to agree. I've known an awful lot of parents whose general attitude has been "If my kid(s) will let me come, it can't be that nuts." They figure that if something were really questionable, their kids would try to keep them away. It's harder to make those midnight orgies and strange cultist rituals happen when you're sharing a room with your mom. *wrygrin*
For sales pitch stuff, i'd focus on the pieces you think they'd understand. Tell them you;re excited trying to sell your artwork. Tell them you've heard that they have some really nifty guests of honor this year, and have they heard that the creator of kevin and kell always comes? Tell them you've heard there are several great comedy acts happening and they're supposed to be really good.
Maybe even show them some of the pictures ppl have taken from past gathers, so they can see that it looks less like fetish heaven and more like a weird version of disneyland. We're a pretty tame bunch, contrary to popular belief, and i think most ppl's pics show that.

That's a good idea, but I can't think of anything they'd like in Pittsburgh.

Hmm, seems nice, but I forgot to mention another problem: My older sister O.O
First, she would complain about going anywhere. She just wants to stay at home and will refuse to go, especially a city taht she hasn't heard of nor thinks is fun. And she will whine until my parents decide not to go.
Second, she HATES furries. She thinks I'm stupid for quote: "being a fan of dressing up as animals". That would be the last place she'd go. And if she refuses to go, the family can't go.

Ah sisters, the ultimate love-hate relationship. Its pretty darn hard to get out of those unless you can work in some kind of shopping, dunno what Pittsburgh has.

Oh, and a few more questions.
*Once you pay for the registration, you don't have to pay for the rest of the days of the con?
*I completely doubt my parents arre going to reserve a hotel room now, because they're not even decided, or haven't even started to decide. If there are no more rooms in any nearby hotel, can I still get there although I'm in another hotel? (most probably a small franchise hotel, like Holiday Inn)

By default, all memberships are good for the length of the con. So if you buy a membership on Thursday, it's good for Sunday like the rest of them. If you get a single day membership, you'll know it, because the badge will say "FRIDAY", "SATURDAY", or "SUNDAY" in big bold letters on it.
Yeah, that's fine. We even have locals who commute to the con from their homes.
We always recommend getting rooms in our room block if possible, but if everything is sold out by that point, then that's fine too.

Yeah, but if you pre-reg, it's $5 less per person. And trust me, you DO want to pre-reg, going through the reg line at the con sucks miserably.

I'll put in some information as well.
As far as the convention itself, there are many MANY entertaining things to do. Anthrocon has its own game show (yes with prizes), panels that talk about charity work, panels that deal with specific animal species, puppet shows, dances, and all kinds of other things. One of our guests of honor this year is Rob Paulsen (the vocal talent behind Pinky of "Pinky and the Brain", Gusto Gummi Bear from "Disney's Gummi Bears" and a host of other cartoon characters.
If you want to have the widest possible variety of programming to choose from, you'd want to be at the convention Friday morning. Once programming starts, it is pretty much non stop each day until the dances are done after midnight. (Except for meal breaks)
One thing that many people are pleased to discover is that Anthrocon attendees are generally very helpful and friendly. Folks view Anthrocon as a time to visit with old friends, make new ones, and generally just have a fun weekend.
If your family has any questions about the convention itself, please feel free to have them contact our Board of Directors to answer any questions. As is well known, our own chairman brings his parents to the convention every year, and they have a great time!
