Calling all DJs and performers (plus, open-mic news)!
As we all know, Anthrocon's known for not only being one of the best furry cons on earth, but also for having some of the best at-con nightlife of any con, period! This year, in addition to our current two nightlife events (the main room dance and the fursuit dance) Anthrocon will now be offering a third venue for your late-night enjoyment, the Sandstone Club. The Sandstone club is not as much a dance as it is a social area oriented towards relaxation and smaller, more intimate performances than the main room or fursuit dance can allow. The music will be more low-key and the environment will be less intense than the dances (though dancing is still welcome.) I know the notice is short but I'd like to extend an invitation once again to all of the fabulous performers in the fandom to help make the Sandstone Club rock!
Scheduled LIVE Musical Performances
I'm going to be fairly restrictive with these, so please don't feel hurt if it doesn't fit into the schedule. I am open to coherent, longer-form concerts or sets at the Sandstone Club should the quality of the performance be professional enough to devoting a room to it for a period of time. For this purpose, please email me at with demo material and an idea of setup required and time involved in your set. Remember the DLCC's rule - if it's too much for one person to carry, the union HAS TO DO IT. Keep this in mind as Anthrocon won't be footing the bill for your setup and teardown. This means these sets will probably have to be primarily acoustic, and larger instruments like drums will be harder to coordinate.
Scheduled DJ Sets
Portions of the night at the Sandstone Club will be devoted to DJ sets. These sets will have to be lower key and more on the relaxed end of the spectrum, i.e. minimal and groovy techno, deep house, ambient, downtempo, chillout and jazz. Please submit DJ demos ASAP to and keep in mind the restrictions of the space and the environment. DJs already playing the main room are welcome to try out, as are people who did not get a big room DJing slot this year (or who did not try out.)
Please note that as much as I love electro house, dubstep, drum and bass, glitch, breaks and progressive speedcore dubpolka (just kidding) there's really no room for it at the sandstone club for the sort of environment that we're trying to create, so keep demos low key. Think more 'lounge' and less 'crazy rave.'
Open Mic Performances
Play guitar? Bongos? Accordion? Write poetry? Small bits of stand-up comedy? Are you a world-class bass virtuoso? Have a small, furry band that wants to do an acoustic set? Do you do a fantastic Al Roker impression? Open mic at the Sandstone club may be the place for you! You don't need to notify me of your intent to perform in advance, though I'd rather like it if you did as it will help me schedule appropriate blocks of time. The only requirements are:
- Your act must be reasonably short and easy to set up and remove.
- Your act must be appropriate. Obviously, some great music contains foul language and a slip here and there couldn't hurt, but if you think it's too risque to go on stage, chances are it probably is.
All forms of performance are welcome, and if you have any questions about something in particular you'd like to perform or perhaps questions in general about this event, please contact me (again at ) to speak with me. Please keep in mind that while there will be DJ performances at the Sandstone Club, there will be no open-mic DJ performances, and all those spots are going to be slotted to people who demo in advance.
I'm really excited about this new addition to AC nightlife and encourage anyone who wants to contribute a performance to it to give me a holla and we'll talk about it. DJs, get those demos in, let's party in style this AC! B)
Deep house? Downtempo? Chillout?
Count me in. I will formulate a demo ASAP.
This is quite fantastic news.
This is going to be many, many levels of awesome.
I was going to try to get to the con to do something, but I'm not going to be in Pittsburgh till the 28th.
I would, however, like to extend an invitation to anyone who is still in the area at the time to come down to our show at Fate Lounge on the 28th. The band I'm in (Slick Idiot www.slickidiot.com) is on tour and we are going to be coming to The Pitt just as AC is winding down.
Anyone still in the area who would like to come see some live music by En Esch and Guenter Schulz of KMFDM fame as well as Mona Mur, Gregg Ziemba Erica Dilanjian and of course, myself.... please come on down to Fate Lounge. I will do my best to work out something with the venue to get people with AC conbadges in for half price.
If anyone has any questions for me, please feel free to contact me:
There is another open-mic stand up event that will be on the schedule. Obviously, I won't restrict open-mic comedy from being performed here, but you should absolutely check that event out if you're interested. :]
Oh god oh god oh god. I SO have to get in on this.
But I have so little time to work up a demo ;~;
Well, rush rush rush because I will be doing selections at some point this week. :]
if someone DOESN'T play stone in focus by aphex twin from seleced ambient works volume 2, it will be tragic.
I thought it was tragic that the final Capsule played the same hip-hop tracks that they played the previous year (Fette's Vette by mc chris, and a song by De La Soul), but I still enjoyed it.

Bumped to the front page, and I added a relevant picture.
