Total cost to view the con. ?
What i mean is going by airplane there then booking a room then airplane back how much would that most likely cost me ?
PS: From Missouri to the Con.
Maybe i should not reply with this guess because you never know who is watching but i am guessing around $3000 for everything ?, and Pre.-Reg. covers the cost for the con. right ?
Few people spend $3000 on and at Anthrocon, unless they have a hotel room to themselves, eat extravagantly, and purchase a lot of items. You are much more likely to spend around $1,000.
Pre-reg would indeed cover all admission to the con.
i caluated my own trip cost and it came at least $1230 for me and parents
Why do your parents want to go !?, I don't want to bring mine they will mess everything up !
The vast majority of people whose parents have attended Anthrocon find that their parents have a great time, enjoy the convention, and often wish to return.
My Dad's attended Anthrocon (and worked on my staff, no less!) and my Mom has an open invitation to come when she wishes.
i don't think my dad would go, i would have to literally drag him to it. first time i explained it to him (the fandom) he thought it was a coping mechanism, second time he thought it was a fetish, and now he doesn't quite now what it is but doesn't care as long as it's "nothing too weird". though now he is starting to as a few questions which is an improvement. maybe some day i'll get him there, he's bound to get curious after i go for a few years
Take a camera, and bring back lots of pictures. Then use them to tell him all about your adventures. Nothing says "look what a great (wholesome!) time i had" quite like photographic evidence.
true true
WeisenWolf pointed us to this very useful city guide.
Oh, not all parents are that interested.. which is just fine. You have stuff you like, and they have stuff they like, and you might not be that interested in Dad's Ham Radio shopping or Mom's bowling league. That's kind of my Mom's position: "This is your thing, Bob. It's great you do it and have fun, but I dunno if I want to go." Maybe one of these years, though.
Most of the parents in attendance at Anthrocon fall into two broad categories:
"My kid is 16, far too young to take this out-of-state trip. But he really wants to go to this convention. I'll go with him, we'll make a family trip out of it, I'll check things out and if I'm bored, go do other things in Pittsburgh."
"My kid is 38 and has been going to these conventions for 9 years, and she keeps saying I'm welcome to come and check it out. You know, I may as well see what it's really like and meet some of her friends. Plus I haven't been to Pittsburgh in a decade."
Then you also have those like me and Snowie where the parents are the furries and we have to bring our son with us.
Yeah, i know it's a tough sell for your boy.
My parents want to enjoy the city, I think my dad will enjoy going to the con
I can only guess what will happen if i take my parents.
My mother might be for it but my dad will be like:
Can someone call animal control we got a wild animal in here ( and by that he means me ) his jokes he makes about me just get under my skin and i rather he not go to the con at all because he will make it a nightmare for me , i rather just go by myself and make it like a escape/vocation because I can enjoy it more if i am by myself but in honestly i am not sure what my mother will do she might say things like " Are you a little old to be dressing up in a costume ? " or the complete reverse of that. Instead of risking it I rather just go by myself MAYBE a close friend that I know for awhile is willing to share half the payment I would bring a friend but I am not sure ...
"Are you a little old to be dressing up in a costume ?"
Well, gee Mom, what about the actors who portray Big Bird and other lovable characters on Sesame Street? Or the lovely entertainers who perform at Walt Disney World? What about professional clowns and team mascots?
Are they too old to bring joy, laughter, and entertainment to people?
*smiles* I'm 35, and I wear a gryphon costume.
Tyrrlin, another response to the question "Aren't you a little old to be dressing up in a costume?" is "Aren't you a little young to not be in a costume?"
My dad was always a tough guy and oldfashioned, it was very difficult to think that the animal disguise it may cause some satisfaction or even pleasing. But to my surprise and my family was the first to open giant cardboard box which came my fursuit ... looked like a child, looking for his head to put it on and go out and play with your grandchildren! hahaha.
Currently, most no longer live with them, but I'm sure next year when I tell them, "Dad, Mom, I'm going to the United States to a convention of fursuiters .." they will laugh and I will ask lots of pictures! hahaha

I am going by myself, staying at the Westin, and going out to nice dinners and travelling by Chauffer+Sedan. All of this estimated, $1200.
Oh, and I'm flying from Denver too.
Somehow I managed to run a bill of only $1250 in 2008 (with my own room and a first class updrade on the way).
This year it should be about $1500-1600.
Still, for a cross continental trip, I suppose it's a pretty nice budget.
Noy
Yeah, so the average cost would be about $1300 for a trip to AC by yourself. This is for a flight, room, etc.
i can survive on 550 bucks. 100 to finish my suit, 140 for the room, 140 for amtrak, 100 for food, 45 to get in, and 25 to get a messenger bag to carry stuff in in suit
Note that online Pre-registration is $45, and On-site Registration will be $50. (Pre-Reg closes Sunday, June 6th!).
That leaves you with awful little pocket money, as well; I'd try to bring $700 - and keep to that $550 budget, but allow yourself a splurge or two if need be, for that wonderful print that someone's selling, or the best fox-related T-shirt ever, or more cornbread at Big Mama's House Of Soul oh yum yum yum, or a $2.50 Sprite from a vending machine, etc.
Also remember the Emergency $20 and/or credit card, somewhere secure and not in your wallet.

i don't have that much. i'll be lucky to get the 550. i'll have to start trimming my budget if i can't get that much
Just a comment: You are planning to come to the con on a shoestring. If anything happens that you haven't budgeted for, you're going to be lacking money in some place you may desperately need it.
Of the expenses you list, there's one that you can bypass that could help you afford the rest of the con. That's your fursuit. (Waits for the fursuiters to stop screaming.) I'm not saying that fursuiting should be banned or anything of the sort. I'm saying that, in your case, that extra hundred dollars you plan for the suit might be better used to give yourself a little budgetary leeway. It's not like being unsuited will make you an outsider: only about 15% or so of attendees wear fursuits. You'd be part of the majority if you didn't wear one.
If you don't take that advice, fine. But do take this part: Double-check every expense you can before the con. Pre-register (you only have through the upcoming weekend). Make sure that your room-share is set in stone as to your attendance and price for the full weekend. Buy round-trip tickets now so that you can get home regardless of any problems. Of the FRESH-T acronym, that covers Registration, Hotel and Transportation. It will leave you with minimal amounts for Food, Emergencies and Stuff, but that looks unavoidable, given your budget.
yep, that's about the case. i'll take care of hotel pay, registration, and my way there first. if all else fails i can get a box of ramen noodles for two bucks (or some other super cheep food), i can't afford stuff this year and might have a little for emergencies. if i can still afford it i will finish my suit

Have you factored in things like transportation to and from the railway station ? Excess baggage charges for fursuit ? (not sure if this applies on railways ? ) I'd guess you're leaving yourself a *very* slim margin for anything unexpected - and there's *always* something unexpected
i have trimmed my budget since then. i wont be in suit because i don't have enough to finish it. my father will be driving me to the station. i will have one smallish duffel bag so no added expense. and if i must i can always borrow money from a friend who will be at the con. i know he will let me because he has already told me so. my room is already paid for and the rest of the money is sitting happy in my wallet.
Just as a note of warning. Don't rely too heavily on other people's finances to bolster your own. Personally, I wouldn't count on other people lending money even if my life depended on it.

Actually, this is one expense which he won't have to worry about; the train station is on the opposite side of the intersection from one corner of the hotel property; in the time it would take to hail and hire a taxi, load his luggage into the trunk (boot), and get into the cab himself, he could walk to the hotel.
Does anyone know if there will be a anthrocon event in october of 2011 or 2012
No. Anthrocon is always held in the end of June/beginning of July time frame. This will not change because other cons(FurFright at Halloween) schedule themselves for other times. There's also no way that the Anthrocon Board of Directors could be ready to put on another con about two months after Anthrocon finishes for that year.
Wikifur does have a listing of all upcoming cons. It can be found at:
http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Template:Upcoming_events
Let's see... in 2010:
- Plane (FL -> PA) = $214
- Hotel (4-split -> Wed - Tuesday) = $145 / 6nights
- Food (breakfast snack + 2 meals daily) = $90 (~ $2 + $6 + $7)
- Fare (Airport -> Hotel, one year taxi split, other year bus) = $20
- Admission = $50
- Stuff = I didn't buy this year! = $0
~$500 total, don't remember if I'm missing anything.

Prices vary greatly for Anthrocon costs. These are six considerations, all rememberable by the FRESH-T acronym: Food, Registration, Emergency, Stuff, Hotel, Transportation.
Food: Most people spend from $20-50 a day for food and beverages. There is dining both inexpensive and gourmet around Anthrocon, so you should be able to find something in your price range.
Registration: Attending-level is currently $45 for Pre-Registration, $50 for On-Site Registration. There are also Sponsor and Supersponsor levels that cost more.
Emergency: the "Put a $20 in your shoe" thing. You should have at least $20 set aside away from your regular wallet, not to be touched until you return home. Do not count on ATMs having money at Anthrocon; quite often they are depleted on the weekend.
Stuff: The biggest variable. The Dealer's Room, the Art show, the Charity Auction all have a great deal of things for purchase. It is possible to buy nothing, but most people do spend at least $100; Some will spend $1,000 or more.
Hotel: Hotel rooms cost about $135 a night after tax; the remaining convention hotel with open rooms is the Doubletree. For a typical four-night stay that's $540; which is why many people share rooms (up to 4 people in a room) to reduce costs.
Transportation: You'll have to research yourself. In your case, a flight from St Louis to Pittsburgh round-trip, with luggage, I would estimate to be roughly $300. You'll need transport from the airport to Anthrocon as well; this can run as cheap as the 28x bus at $2.75, or more expensive taxi and shuttle bus options. You might also consider a bus service such as Greyhound, or taking the train.
If you want a pure ballpark figure? $700 if you roomshare, spend modestly, and find a average flight.
