I'm ecstatic that there will be a dance Thursday. Good way to get the energy and hype up early. But I have to say, I'm extremely disappointed that there is no Sunday dance. I know it must be too late to change this, but I really would have loved some big event to close off the con. I feel like I'll be having that depressing "time's almost up" feeling for all of Sunday without anything big to look forward to at the end.
EDIT: Also, I again realize that it's probably too late to make any changes, but why is Thursday the longest dance and Saturday the shortest? It seems like it's sort of fizzling out towards the end instead of building up. Sorry if I'm coming off as complaining, but... these decisions are just REALLY surprising to me.
The length of the dance is affected by other events that take place in the SOP Ballroom. Some of the signature events take place in the ballroom before the dance and those events require that large of a venue because of how popular they are. It just more a matter of availability than anything else.
As for why there isn't a dance Sunday the con officially ends after closing ceremonies which run from 5:30-6:30. After this point there are no more official convention activities. It is also a time for the board and staff to relax after all of the hard work they put into making this con happen.
Oh, I didn't realize there were space limitations. That does makes sense then. And hey, I'm all for staff getting to relax, I was on staff for FC'10 and will be for FC'11. ;3
Relax? Sunday after 6 pm we've got 8 Teamsters, 10 electricians, 6 carpenters and lots of volunteers working to dismantle everything, pack it up and load it into the trucks before midnight, when we have to vacate the space.
I relax on Monday for 6 hours, once the truck is headed out, then head home and spend the next few weeks tallying Art Show sales so I can pay the artists. Kage relaxes in October, I think, after finishing the year's accounting and filing all the dam' forms th' dam' gub'mint wants.
What PeterCat said, and just to give folks reading this thread an idea of time scale, I arrive on site on Tuesday evening. By Sunday night, I'm ready to collapse.
I think it was 2 years ago when I had to break out of the convoy heading back to Philly on the Monday after the con to pull into a rest stop and nap for an hour, due to sheer tiredness.
Sunday night the con staff throw a dead dog party and a lot of the DJs who played the main room take informal shorter shifts playing to a smaller room. It's a more intimate sort of thing, the DJs are having more fun and goofing off more, and there's a lot more fursuiters - it's a good time, just not an official event, and it's not got the sound system oomph or bright lights of the main room behind it.
As for the scheduling issues, the SoP ballroom where the dances take place is in increasingly heavy use every day. Saturday is the sort of 'peak' of the con and some of the larger events take place in the ballroom later at night, so the dances get cut back to fit it. Remember what the focus of the con is, after all.
There's still plenty of fun to be had at the dances with THREE ROOMS of music most nights, so don't worry about getting your fill of dancing. :]
Ah, I see. Well that certainly makes a lot of sense. And I'm SO glad to hear that there is a dead dog party. You can be sure I'll be there!
Thanks very much for clarifying, and you can bet I'll be there for every hour of the dances. ^^
Actually, this may sound like a stupid question, but is the Sandstone Club part of the con? Somehow I got the impression that it is located outside of the con, but that may be me mixing up information I read elsewhere...
It is part of the con. It will be located in Convention Center rooms 303-305.
It is, and it will be awesome.
I'm looking forward to stopping by the sandstone club. Sound like its going to be great.
Awesome. A collective "Thank you!" to everyone for clearing so much up for me. I'm so hyped for this! I really can't wait.
And another thank you to everyone working so hard to make it all happen. ^_^
Hm, if I can come up with something interesting, I may do the Open Mic.
Do it!
Is there a place to buy glowsticks over there? (like at the club)?
In the past, the convention has given out glowsticks in the main dance for free. While I can't speak for whether or not that is going to be the case this year, you may want to keep an eye out for it.
Seriously, thank you Anthrocon Staff and Volunteers for the massive effort you all are putting into this labor of love. Sounds like the Sandstone Club will be the place to unwind but still enjoy the sights and sounds. Offering free glowsticks for the dances was more than generous. Well, rest up tonight, folks!
Anyone know any close locations to buy glowsticks at? :3
Im only asking to see if they have some locally due to the issue of certian amount of liquids on the plane

And thank you to giza for the fast promotion to the front page! :]
