Made some website tweaks
I just made some changes to the website which should be fairly obvious. A number of the columns which were formerly on the left side of the page (and made the pages longer than necessary) have been moved over to the right side in a brand new column.
Just like on the left side, clicking the header of any menu item in the right side column will minimize it as you browse the site.
Let me know if there are any questions, concerns, or browser bugs.
Thanks!
Looks terrible, Giza.
Whereas the previous incarnation made the pages perhaps longer than they needed to be, I only had to scroll up and down - which was something we had to do anyway, to read the following replies; now I have to scroll left and right as well, to see the whole page.
Of course, if I wish to see the entire width of the page, I can change the "zoom" feature to 75% or less...but then the text is too small to read. Trying to cross-compensate for the fine print by increasing the text size to its largest setting, doesn't work for the text in the comment composition field, and results in overlapping in certain other fields...and then it all has to be set back to "normal" to view standard pages on the rest of the Web.
I can see your point with that. My screen is wide enough to see the whole width but with a narrower screen it would be a pain to have to scroll left/right too.
I must mildly concur. The new width runs a bit wide for how I set my browser window on even my 22" desktop; I've yet to try this on, say, my Ubuntu netbook with the 10.1" screen.

Yeah, hate to say it, but when I logged in at first this morning on my MBP (running at 1440x900 I believe) the net effect was a hint of something new on the right side of the page, but I didn't see it until I sat down at work where I have a -really- wide monitor and it became visible.
What browser were you using? I tested the site out in FireFox on my 13" MBP last night, and it rendered just fine.
That said, I designed the site for browsers that are at 1280 pixels wide, which constitutes the vast majority of visitors to this site.
I'll see if I can do something for the folks who are running at 1024 pixels wide, but the web (and web standards) being what they are, it's pretty difficult for me to build something thatis cutting edge, yet works 100% of the time on 100% of the platforms out there.
As you had surmised - I am running 1024 wide, on IE8.0.something, under WindowsXP Professional; This is on an old Toshiba Tecra 8200 laptop, which I bought from Flinthoof Ponypal a couple years ago; he had pimped it up and maxed it's capabilities as far as they could go; I bought it to have an XP machine, a working laptop that had all the legacy ports (LPT1 and RS-232, plus video feed and the DVD drive, and all for the bargain price of $100. What I saved, I spent on Furry Art and Charity donations at FC 2008.
I didn't mean to sound snarky with my comment, it just bookended nicely with Nicona's opening to that reply. We DO appreciate all the little enhancements and custom bits that you work into the website, but some of us - despite being electronic technicians - do not have or cannot afford the "latest and greatest" cutting-edge commercial technology, especially when there is perfectly good (and dirt-cheap) mid- or low-tech equipment that has barely fallen out of warranty, still out there. "High-" or "Latest-" does not immediately translate into "Best", or even "Good", and only vary rarely into "Necessary".
Ooops - misthreaded response. Please see my entry above.
In the left column, if you click on the box you can see/unsee the items under it. This does not work in the right-hand column. (Behavior noted under IE 8.)
Working in chrome for me.
Okay, I wrote and deployed a little Javascript code to try and address the issue some folks were having with horizontal scrolling.
If your browser window is less than 1280 pixels wide, the right sidebar will not appear. Conversely, if your browser window is wide enough, it will appear.
Resizing the window? I have that supported, too. If the window gets too narrow, the sidebar will be hidden. If it's made wide enough again, the sidebar will fade back in.
This is the first time I've tried a UI tweak like this, so let me know how it works out.
I can't get the right side bar to come back now. Before I could see both sidebars with no problem (no left/right scrolling needed) and not have the browser open to the full width of the screen (using 1280x1024 resolution, IE8). Now as I make the browser wider the left tool bar will widen out to max size but the right tool bar will never appear, even at full screen. I think it would be better if the right tool bar would appear before the left tool bar started widening. I will try it on my laptop later (runs 1490x900) but I won't be able to until tomorrow.
There is also some information I am missing when the right tool bar is not there now like who is online, days left to AC and the quick search bar. It is kind of a shame that someone would miss out on some features of the site because they don't have a big enough screen.
That seems to work quite well now, the right bar fades in and out properly under Firefox 3.6.4.

A suggestion for you, Giza. Is it possible to have a mouseover text expansion? Like some of the topics that are truncated in the links on the main page down to an ellipses (...)?

Look great, Giza. I like how you can view more of the information at one time.
