I was looking at the schedule, and I'm just wondering how having the two stacked against one another will work.

Actually, looks like the lottery itself is during Opening Ceremonies; the sign-ups are beforehand. Looks like you could go to the lottery, find out if you got a spot, then come to the Opening Ceremonies and still probably catch the bulk of it.

Unfortunately, there are only so many hours in the day. If the Artists Alley is going to open at noon, then the lottery needs to happen one hour before then so we have time to process everyone and get everyone down to Hall B and set up in time for opening. It is an unfortunate reality that if you are going to participate in Artists Alley, you are forced to miss some other parts of the convention. If someone does not wish to make that sacrifice, they are always welcome to either not get a seat in the Alley on Friday, or consider purchasing a dealer's table next year.
