my request to AC attendees
Be aware of where you are as you move through the con. Please don't stop at the top of escalators to figure out where to go next -- step forward. You can think just as well five feet away from the escalator as you can five inches from the top step. There are people coming up behind you; please don't make us run into you!
As a corollary, please don't stop as you enter or exit the giant revolving door at the Westin. The same principle of thought applies. I really don't want to run into anyone or raise my voice to ask you to move, because when I do that I sound bitchy when really all I want is to get where I'm going.
All that said, I'd like to thank Security for their hard work at managing the elevator lines. It never seemed like I waited over long, even when I joined the queue back by Pizza and Paninis. You were always cheery and upbeat when I saw you, and that means so much with all those crowds.
One Of the things that bugged me about giant revolving door at the Westin was the few people that would jump onto it, see someone outside and ether A. try to push the automatic door to go faster, making it just stop, or B. try to jump back out they way they came in as the door is spinning.
Besides the 6-2-1 rule, can we also make "Stand to the right, walk to the left" a part of the lexicon among the attendees. It's a regular saying the locals who ride DC Metro have when it comes to the escalators, especially during tourist season.
If the escalators were more than one person wide, I would endorse this suggestion and ask to subscribe to your newsletter. Alas, they are not.
There's also some reason to believe that even walking up the escalator, when done by dozens upon dozens of furs, can kill the escalator. Jumping or running on them is even worse.
As much as possible, i personally would like to encourage us to ascribe to a "stand to right, stand to the left, block the people trying to walk on the escalator" philosophy, especially when it comes to the poor abused westin escalators.
the escalators were often down, and sometimes that was because of shear overload. I was on it once where it ground to a halt because it was simply not strong enough to haul up more than half it's length worth of people
The escalators may get to a point where they will just refuse to function, and the hotel/teamsters simply will not have the time to come and reactivate them, and everyone will be forced to climb.
The escalators are a privilege: please do not abuse them.
I really saw them breaking down a lot in the last few hours of Sunday night. I know how aggravating it is for whoever comes to restart them. This year seemed to be the worst for them.
I saw them breaking down excessively Wednesday and Thursday
For both days, every time I'd walk by the escalators (which was very often) a different set of escalators would be broken. Sometimes it'd be both escalators going to the second floor, sometimes it was both of the ones going up, sometimes it was 1 & 3, etc. I'd see them moving again periodically so I know they were at least temporarily operational, but the attrition rate for them was absolutely staggering in the beginning of the convention.
Later on in the weekend, it seemed to mellow out a bit. After Friday, it seemed that more often than not, the escalators actually were working.
And also could people please stop standing on the DLCC end of the sky bridge in groups to talk? I can't tell you the number of times I had to push through people standing at the end of it where it jumps to the right for no reason to make the hallway even narrower. It was even worse while in suit. Didn't have too much of an issue with immobile crowds any where else as the place is too big, only that one bottle neck.
I want to spread around a mantra for the escalators.
Leave a step between you the person in front of you.
Do not jump, walk or bounce.
Be lazy and enjoy the ride.
Don't pull or lean on the handrail.
The Westin escalators have proven to be very sensitive to bounce and strain. So walking up or down them, jumping, or even dragging a shoe too hard along sides can put enough strain on them to trip the shut off.
Perhaps there should be signage to that effect, and an announcement at opening ceremonies? Probably no point in putting a note in the con book though
Well my escalator comment certainly stirred up a major discussion. Next time I am going to remember that not all escalators are built the same (and not ever complain about Metro escalators being broken...unless it's one of the really long ones to the surface).
"*tick tick tick tick* Across Penn Avenue"...?
Maybe we need escalator police like we have at the elevators to monitor the flow of people on them.
perhaps next year we could have charity box for the Westin to upgrade their escalators. seriously they need something stronger
Yesss. Every time the escalator drops down each person puts a dollar or 20 into a box at the top. (Not literally of course... boxes get stolen like nobody's business)
I use the stairs all the time. Because I'm SUPER POWERFULL!!! >:3

These practices are unfortunatly not limited to the furry community, but are especially noticable during conventions. My one particular peeve is people who "claim" a luggage cart as there own personal property for hours at a time, rather than using it to move their luggage from the curb to their room and returning it for others to use. I once walked into my hotel room one evening to find a cart my roommate had taken that morning still filled with his luggage and stuff.
