More on the DLCC rooftop incident
A number of people have told me that someone was going around collecting money at the convention ostensibly to help Anthrocon pay the security fees that were assessed to us.
To the best of my knowledge nobody has handed us any money, and if this person was collecting funds under these auspices, I would rather like to know who it was and where the collected money went.
You mean we got dinged $$$ this year? I thought it was going to be next year so we could have access
I think he's implying there was some fraud that occurred.
Yes, we got billed for the security guards hired to be on the rooftop in case someone managed to sneak up there somehow. The gentleman in question will be welcome to register for future Anthrocons as soon as he reimburses us for that expense. (I won't give the figure, but the approximate math isn't difficult: 2 guards x 24 hours x 4 days x their hourly rate. And they don't make minimum wage.)
Since we budget according to what we expect to receive based on last year's membership, as we had some 400+ more people we have enough set aside for such unforeseen expenses, within reason. (But this was pushing reason.)
I can enlighten.
A very nice fellow came into the Crawford room looking for Kage. He said that he and his friends had heard about "Mr Roof" and heard about the "$1500.00" (his number) bill from the DLCC and thought it was unfair that the con should pay cause of an attendee's foolishness. So they thought if they coild raise the money, the DLCC would reopen the roof.
I told him that I liked where his head was at but there was more to the story. He was a little crest fallen and wondered what to do with the money he had already raised (looked to be maybe $30). I suggested that if he couldn't find the folks and return it he might donate it to the con charity.

I foresee another swing of the banhammer if some jerk scammed a bunch of congoers
