Advertisers on the site?
I've been noticing a very unusual trend going on today.
People are joining up, but they've got these weird-ass names, and their bios are all about buying medications... I also noticed a user who's every paragraph was ended with links to medications.
WTF is going on? Has the AC website become so popular that there's gonna be spam messages?
How do you flag them, then?
Posts have a link at the bottom that says, "flag as spam".
For a user account, just email webmaster AT anthrocon DOT org and we'll take care of it.
Guess you got to those guys before I could send the email. I was gonna look at their account profiles and check their usernames, but it wouldn't let me, so I figure you got 'em first.
PS. I think you forgot one. That "Ambian and nexium Buying online in Tempe" is still there...
They are now at the bottom of the Allegheny river, yes.
And actualy, URLs work for us better than usernames. Because then I can just click on a URL and click the "block" button.
Heh, cheap but easy way to get 'em out.
Do we require a captcha to create an account?
Spambots do not get through.
Unfortunately, spammers hire people from third-world countries for a few nickels a day to spend hours creating accounts and posting spam to get past captchas. That's what we have been seeing of late.
Best thing to do is to click the "report spam" link and we'll take care of it. It only wastes your time (and ours) writing a followup to the spam. In fact, it is the worst thing you can do. If the ad gets attention, no matter whether that attention is positive or negative, the spammer wins and is encouraged to post more.
I didn't know they were that persistent, I'd figure there'd be a breaking point where it's not worth the effort since most folks don't read the ads anyway.

So your saying the longer this thread is the more the spammers win?

when you see these, just flag them and they will be kicked off. i've taken care of a few that way
Due to economic recession and budget cuts the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off, we're sorry for the inconvenience.
