Last year Cmdr. Kitsune, a few others and myself were eating on Thursday night in the rather upscale hotel restaurant. A woman in obvious office worker type attire came up to out table and started asking us about the convention.

The Cmdr and myself directed her to Con Ops where she could get any questions answered. She persisted in annoying us with questions. I explained to her that we had nothing to say, that she was obviously media of some kind and we are having dinner so she should go to Con Ops.

She continued to try to ask things, swearing up and down not to be media, just curious. I finally waved a waiter over and asked him why we had to put up with this invasion to our dinner and she was asked to leave, and did.

Later she was seen in the lobby, ‘acting’ drunk, hanging on fursuiters and talking to people about the con. That’s the last I saw of her as I had to go Friday to take a trip but I heard there was a little bit of media circus around the con last year.

The message I’m sending here is if approached; just send them to Con Ops or the nearest security person. No one should take it on himself to assume they can be a spokesperson for the con or fandom. It’s also pretty easy to spot media people vs. a mundane asking what’s going on.

thank you i defiantly agree.. though most of the stuff i saw of last years media coverage of AC didn't seem too bad.. i mean you guys know we've been horribly worse represented by other TV shows and such.. i did though thought it was funny how one tv newscaster called us "Arthrocon" lol

yes I would agree with you on that one like you said other certain stations represented us horribly and they probably wanted to put out a bad name for us but anyway just do you what you have to do if they bother you take them to conops or get with friends and walk away, now Otakon is a different story XD

Good points all around.

We actually do have Media Liaisons in the organization who will gladly speak to any reporters that stop by, as well as provide them with a press kit. They will also accompany any reporters around the convention. Such reporters will also be identified with a very conspicuous Press Pass.

If you see a reporter walking around the con who is not accompanied by a member of our staff, please bring it to our attention so that we can provide them with a Press Pass.

I'm not sure how well it worked, but wearing a suit and tie seemed to keep the media away from me. I appeared as another "guest" at the hotel, rather than part of the convention (other than my conbadge.)
