I really want to tell my parents about the fandom, but im scared that they will be all''(insert thing about 1000 ways to die or other show)'' and I'll be yelled at ,grounded or worse. I remember a long time ago my parents said they would love me no matter yet. I remember when I saw the 1000 ways to die episode(the bear one). My dad was in the living room watching Spike and I had walked in the comercials just ended and then the part where the guy on shrooms walks by the (insert inaproriate content here) and gets killed trying to 'bleep' a bear. I heard my dad call furs f***ing freaks after he watched it. Thats the main reason I'm scared to tell my parents. I know they are most likely going to find out soon because I'm starting to hang some of my artwork on my wall, they may find out about my furry social network accounts, and my youtube account. If anyone can help me out please reply.

Everything I've seen on here in different topics tends to the same point: if you have to present it to them, don't make it seem like your entire lifestyle, but rather a fun hobby.  If they see it as something fun that you enjoy on the side, it's far more likely that they'll be accepting or just not make a big deal of it.

Check out these topics for more help from wiser furs than I: http://www.anthrocon.org/node/6243/explained-fandom-parents-dad-has-bad-impression and http://www.anthrocon.org/node/6233/furry-awareness-week.

And of course some great help from Kage himself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2DSc8GHl5g <-- this is the first of a series of videos.

If you'd like to talk more I'd be glad to lend an ear!  Feel free to PM or email me.  Best of luck! =)

Due to economic recession and budget cuts the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off, we're sorry for the inconvenience.

I've always tried to compare furry to a genre, like sci-fi or fantasy.  Sci-fi is a story set in the future or with advanced technology, fantasy is a story set in mythical lands or with magig or fantastical creatures, and furry is a story set with animal characters.  We sure seem to treat it like a genre considering we have our own con and everything.

That's being covered right now in this thread.  Might want to take further conversation over there.
