Just wondering if anyone planned on bringing some of their Games Workshop minis for some round-table rumbles this year. Saw a few 40k games going on last year, perhaps something more organized could occur this time around?

I do play but I find there is too much stuff happening at AC to make time for a full 40k game. My minis stay safely at home.

It may be possible to do like a 40k in 40 minutes tournament or something similar. This would mean people don't have to bring more than 20 or so models and the games will go quickly. Just do something like everyone plays x games, and at the end the person with the most victory points wins.

Ohh, fully didn't think of that, I may try 40 in 40, or kill team

How about combat patrols?

400 points, no combined armor values above 32 (so rhino and lower) HQ's are not required but are limited to no more than two wounds and no 2+ armor saves allowed on any model. One troops choice is required but the rest is open for anything else.

I say a three round tournament is in order!

kitwulfen's picture

Website: [Link]

Um, that's essentially the 40k in 40 minutes rules.

40K in 40 Minutes

400 Points
No Armor Values Above 32(Rhinos, Chims, Landspeeders, etc are good)
1+ Troops
No 2+ Saves
No Invul Saves
No More Than 2 Wounds Per Model

40K in 40 Minutes is kinda hard on me cause I play Wolves. I have to take 1+ Greyhunters, and I have to have 1 HQ choice for every 750 points or portion thereof. Of course, my HQ choice usually ends up being super-badass cause of the wargear I pile on him. It also makes me sad, cause then I don't get to show off my tanks.

Anyways, 40k in 40 Minutes with some sort of tourney-style setup sounds good. I can probably contribute to the prize. Maybe a free art commission for first place or something.

ETA: What're we gonna do about terrain? When will we play? Where will we play? Who will keep track of all the wins/losses/Victory Points? Will we play with a Turn Limit?

NallTWD's picture
Location: Boston, MA

Website: [Link]

Hmmm... Prize isn't my department, but I could bring mobile terrain from the battle bunker here in Boston for the weekend no sweat.

OK... How about this for rules:

Play: Anytime. I'll create a sign-up board so we can find/contact each other for play. Goal would be to play one game a day for a total of three. Or- should we petition for a room and a specific time? Shall we play three games straight? Perhaps a specific time over three days? (kinda tough, as I'll be suiting)

Scorekeeping: I'll provide a stack of player sheets. We'll roll for a scenario, play it out, calculate VP and add it in with a sportsmanship/painting score. I'll have a folder on the door to my room for em. Wins and losses will be based on scenario rules.

Turn limits: As scenario, but will max out at 8 or 90 minutes for those pesky random game length rules. Space marines with the extra 4+ turn roll thing will act as normal, but the time limit will trump it.

And wolves? Damn. Might have to bring my hollow guys to play afterall... Wolves love Tzeench, right? ^.^

Armies I could Bring:
Space Marines (Sons of Medusa, White Scars, Trail Blazers)
Sisters of Battle
Thousand Sons
Grey Knights
Tau

Working at a GW has it's perks!

I'll most likely Drag my Marines (Garvainian Rangers) cross country again. I'd be willing to play a few games

In the interests of keeping things simple, I'd suggest that everyone play the same scenario with the same 400 point force. Rolling up scenarios and then customizing a force against an opponent takes too much time. Too much other stuff to do.

I haven't been to any of the gaming rooms since the move to the Westin, so I'm not entirely sure what we're working with there, but grabbing a table in the Zoo for a random game isn't too terribly difficult.

The only Chaos I've played against was Khorne. I handed the Berserkers their asses in close combat, but the heavy weapons squads decimated my infantry as I tried to close the field after the CC. I think what mainly sealed the Berserkers' fates was my Wolf Lord's 6 I5 S5 No Save Always Hit on 3+ attacks.

I tend to face Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Tyranids most. For this reason I've got a tank/monstrous creature-hunting Pred with 3 Lascannons, and a support Pred with the twin-linked in the turret and the heavy bolters in the sponsons. I want Razorbacks and Landspeeders for GG heavy bolter fire. Or another Pred.

ETA: I wouldn't be opposed to having a small VP bonus for guys who've painted up their units decently/completely, but I'd rather not turn this into a modelling competition or anything.

What I'll do is custom craft four scenarios for this and do my best to make them fair and fun. I've designed some before for GW events and they've gone quite well. I'll post them before AC so we can change them or approve to be fair and prepared.

To make it fair, one 400 point list is all we'll get. No changes or sidebars. Gotta be good and ready for anything.

As for the painting side of things, there will be a painting/sportsmanship score for each game to add into total battle points to determine the overall outcome. After all, 400 points is like 18 marines and a commander. No excuses for not painting Eye-wink

Well this sounds awesome. Force Commander Iron Wolf certainly looks forward to facing some new generals. I would love to snap out a handful of 40k in 40 games. So is it decided finally 400 points? Because I don't want to just bring 400 points worth of units, and not be prepared cause I've got about 2000 points worth of army at my disposal.

Feel free to bring more in the event you find time for a big game. Late nights work best for those!

I for one doubt I'll have time for a bigger game, but I'll bring more just in case I have a lull in suiting or severe insomnia... Doesn't happen all too much with a pair of 13 hour drives bookending your trip, but what the heck, ya never know!

Also- Don't forget folks, no ordnance in combat patrols. Invuln saves are allowed though. So yes to demons, no to whirlwinds.

And a correction- it's AV 33 or lower, so dreads just became available for use.

kitwulfen's picture

Website: [Link]

So we're not doing 40k in 40 mins rules, but rather a slight modification of them? As in...

400 Points
AV ≤33
No 2+ Saves
≤2 Wounds/model
1+ Troops

Neh?

Yep. Straight up 40k in a flash rules... Combat patrols. Only difference will be the new scenarios. I'll have them posted in a few weeks time.

Never falter eh? Guess it just means they die standing fast then...

Now... Do I set them on fire with Sisters, or do I make them into Chaos Spawn with Tzeench? Hmmmm...

Yeah... That'd work great, except for the no 2+ saves rule...
This is hard x.x

Oh- and for it was brought to my attention that there's a list out there that is as follows:

White Scars army: 400 points.
5 White scars Bikers, Veteran Sgt
3 Land speeder Tornadoes
400 Points

I found that one on a forum, and I'd just like to toss out there that any list with three land speeders equipped with assault cannons will make things very, very unfun. Don't do it x.x

DAMNIT! WHY MUST YOU RUIN MY PLANS?!

I had been very carefully considering buying some Razorbacks or Landspeeders.

NallTWD's picture

I'll let the two razorback list stand, but remember- there will be a sportsmanship score that includes list composition Eye-wink

We'll compromise on land speeders- I'll call them 0-2.

Two of the toughest combat patrols to deal with after all... The sentinel bomb and the swarm. Maybe I should switch those out for flamers...

I'm not likely to actually spend any more money on my army. I don't play nearly enough to justify dropping 60 or 100 bucks on new units for a single tourney this summer. Especially when that could go towards the Dealer's Den.

Can we deep strike?

And if I purchased and brought the starter set for Battlefleet Gothic, would anyone play with me? That game looks fun.

NallTWD's picture
Location: Boston, MA

Website: [Link]

Hells yes! I'll bring my Armageddon Fleet in a heartbeat.

And yes, deep striking is allowed, as are infiltrators and reserves. Don't forget that up to a third of your army can start in reserve normally. Small game, big tactics! Scenarios are playtesting on Thursday... I'll be sure to post 'em here for final approval.

kitwulfen's picture

Sounds good. I'll let you know if I bring any BFG stuff.

I'm volunteering two prizes for the 40k tourney, a first place and a last place prize. First place is a single character digitally coloured commission. Last place is a single character traditionally inked commission.

A sample of my latest work, that's currently in-progress (slightly NSFW).

Nifty... a Wooden Spoon award eh?

Lemme see what I can wrangle up for prizes. Maybe some Inquisition stuff so every imperial player can use it as allies (which every good imperial player should consider! Who wouldn't want to field grey knight terminators in a Guard army?)

My Thoughts on a Marine force.

Troops 1
6 Scouts
5 Sniper Rifles
1 Missile Launcher

Troops 2
5 Scouts
4 Boltguns
1 Heavy Bolter

Troops 3
5 Scouts
3 Bolt pistol CC Weapon combo
2 Shotguns

Elite 1
5 Veterens
Sargent
Honors, Storm bolter, Powerfist, F.Charge
Vet 1
Power Sword, Bolt pistol, F. Charge
Vet2
Pair of lighting claws, F. Charge
Vet 3
Boltgun, F. charge
Vet 4
Bolt pistol, Chainsword, F. charge

Just my thoughts on a possible force setup that follows the rules set forth. Has a decent amount of Anti-personel firepower and Anti-Armor Firepower. Also the Sniper rifles can pin down squads. If you spot a hole in this list please let me know, I'd be interested in finding out what others think about it as well.

I like the fact it's exactly what it's supposed to be- an elite scouting force moving ahead of the main army. I for one, am doing the same thing... My tentative list thus far is:

Palatine: Plasma pistol, brazier of holy fire, litanies of faith
Battle Sister Squad: 10 Sisters of battle (bolters), Veteran Superior (Pistol/CCW, book of st lucius)
Dominion squad: 5 Sisters of battle with flamers, Veteran superior with combi-flamer and brazier of holy fire, book of st lucius.
Immolator: Twin heavy flamers

kitwulfen's picture

Website: [Link]

Maybe this has changed in fourth edition, but wouldn't your Sergeant need to be in Terminator Armor to be using a Storm Bolter?

Otherwise I'm looking at whoring up a Grey Hunter squad with a good HQ and a Wolf Guard leader to back them up, maybe a Landspeeder in there too.

NallTWD's picture
Location: Boston, MA

Website: [Link]

No... A storm bolter is a two-handed weapon no matter what, terminator armor or not. So any model with a storm bolter, save grey knights in power armor, never get an additional hand weapon bonus. And yes, any model who can buy weapons from the armory can have one. Hell, even strength 3 sisters can carry em!

And just to restate- No 2+ saves in Combat patrols!
Remember... these are scouting forces... Plan accordingly!

BTW- I'm SO not using that Sisters list.. it got *thromped* in the worst of ways last night.. 0-3 without a hope of winning.

kitwulfen's picture

My Grey Hunters will probably be 10 strong, with a Wolf Guard to lead them and a Wolf Lord or Wolf Guard Battle Leader attached. Bolters all around, CCWs for the Grey Hunters, with a couple power weapons mixed in. Maybe a powerfist for the Wolf Guard. Frost blade and Belt of Russ for the WGBL. Probably frag and melta/krak on the WGL and WGBL at least. Might throw in wolf tooth necklace or something. Probably a meltagun for one of the Grey Hunters.

Ok, so three scenarios are written up and are being playtested tomorrow!

They're all variations on tournament standard scenarios, so now it's time to get weird. I need you guys to pick your top 3 40k hazards and comment on them here. I'll be including hazards in two scenarios of six. (Each game will be rolled for.) Just to mess with us all.

If they're more fair to one army than another, I'll try and balance them out accordingly.

You'd be amazed at how few models you'd need in a 400 point list! Couple of warriors and some genestealers and you're set! Maybe a few gaunts... Zoanthrope.. OK, so there's lots of choices. I'm sure you could sneak a few bugs in with your stuff comfortably? ^.^

Scenarios are ready!
Here are they are:

1) Fog of War: (Nightfight, Reserves, spotting distance 8", Random Game Length, And total darkness- Anything moving more than 6" has to take a difficult terrain test to avoid hitting something in the darkness. Against vehicles roll 2D6, one double 1's it takes an immediate glancing hit. Jump infantry and bikes take dangerous terrain rolls.)

Escape off the other side of the board with at least one unit. If neither side achieves this, victory points work as normal. The unit moving off the board must have spotted an enemy unit (to tell them what's there!) Scoring units are above 25%.

2) Cleanse!: (Reserves, Deep Strike, Infiltrate, table corners)

Each table corner captured at the end of the game is worth 200 extra VP, in addition to whatever VP have been scored as normal.

3) The Runner: (Alpha, Dusk & Dawn, Strategy Rating)

The runner: WS4, BS2, S3, T4, W2, I2 LD10, SV3+

Defender must escort the messenger across the board to the opposing table edge. Must get within 4". If he's killed, the attacker wins. If he's in the 4" zone, the defender wins. If neither condition is met, award victory points as normal.

4) Nuclear Wasteland: (Flaming Pools, Blinding Light, Oppressive heat)

A standard combat patrols scenario with some added hazards. And to clarify- ANY plasma or laser weapons, even Eldar and Tau! Tyranid devourers will need to doll a 3+ before they fire)

5) Standard Combat Patrol Scenario (Infiltrate)

6) Choose a Scenario

How does that sound? They tested well, though the first three were difficult to do, a nice challenge! That should give you a bit more info on what to do with a good solid Combat Patrol, so do the lists up!

Sounds rather complicated to me.

NallTWD's picture

Well, scenarios can be picked instead of rolled for, I'd guess. Just some options to spice things up.

Can always just go for standard combat patrols!

Nah, I don't think those are overly difficult. Besides it throws some extra fun into the otherwise mundane combat patrol. I'm actually really looking forward to playing The Runner scenario.

I'm a fan of KISS. Stuff like, "Here are your troops, here are their troops, make their troops dead," is what I'm a fan of. Or, "Here are some objectives, capture them to win." Scenarios 2 and 5 sound good to me. The rest, not so much.

NallTWD's picture
Location: Boston, MA

Website: [Link]

Welp, I'll give the players an option to go standard mission or roll off against each other to pick a scenario. That should keep things nice and fair and throw some variety into it.

In all honesty though, the scenarios are fun, but they're also designed to stop the traditional means of "breaking the system"... IE 3 land speeder tornadoes, 40 fire warriors, 60 gaunts, 3 Eldar heavy platforms with D-cannons, etc. With some spice, you'll have to think with a bit more strategy than normal. I'm trying to recapture the 'light and swift' feel to combat patrols.
