Just thought I'd start a places to eat thread. I hope this is a good place to post it. Last year, all I ate was chinese because I couldn't find anything else. I'm hoping someone knows a good sushi place this year, and can share where it is. My reccomendation is Chinatown Inn (Google it) its about 3 blocks from the Omni and the food is to die for. If, that is, you like chinese. So, whats affordable, not fast food, tasty, and not a big walk? ^^; |

Though they ran out of sausage on Sunday. How they managed to do that, I'm not sure. With luck they'll be better stocked this year!

BE CAREFUL with Pizza Parma though... The food is decently priced, but it takes FOREVER to get service! Make sure to plan a visit to them long in advance or plan on waiting awhile!

Yes, I think I waited 45 minutes for my extra large pizza... but $16 was more than a fair price. They charge me $32 at Papa John's here in Minnesota for the same pizza. @_X
The Fish Market is great, too, if you like sushi. Just don't do what I did... I ate a whole wad of wasabi... I didn't even know what it was. (My throat felt like it had been sprayed with Lysol. I will never do that again.)

Steeletown Diner was AWESOME!!!cheap, with lots of good food!!! Lol they ran out of food though on Sunday and were closed. But it's been said that they will be more prepared for the con load this year ^.^
There are also lots of little places near the omni to eat. There was even another little place that had 'furry' specials! Just for the convention!
Also the Con book I heard will have a listing of resterautns that are good, cheap and tasty to eat at.
But yes, dont eat out all the time though as it enhances con crud and increases the import of dustbunnies to your wallet.

Max and Erma's was awesome. One of their appetizers, some mozeralla cheese cubes that'd been breaded, fried, and served with marinara sauce, was exceedingly tasty. Their bacon cheeseburger that was smothered in barbeque sauce was also excellent. You could taste the heart-clogging goodness of the calories.
>But yes, dont eat out all the time though as it enhances con crud and increases the import of dustbunnies to your wallet.
I dunno about enhancing con crud, but I try to only eat out once a day. Generally that means a good dinner. Breakfast last year was Starbucks half the time. Lunch didn't always happen. This year I'm looking at packing in food for breakfast and lunch.

I packed food last year, but half the time forgot it was there
So I grabbed food when I remembered and always had a pretty good dinner...me and mornings dont..get along so breakfast generally is lunch by that time

permalinkI usually just got fries or a slice of pizza at the snack bar in the Dealer's room ,and then I ate subway for dinner.
The snack bar wasn't the worst prices i've seen(if i remember correctly) ,and it was conviently there. Since i had money spacifically for food it wasn't bad.

To me, the prices at the snack bar in the Dealer's Room were absolutely horrible for the quality/quantity of food.

permalinkLike i said, I've seen worse.

permalinkThe prices were high but to those of us stuck in the dealers den there was little other alternative since you were not allowed to bring food in from outside the con center.

I, too, have never heard eating out listed as a potential cause of con crud. I think it probably depends on what kind of stuff you're eating, but most restaurant diets i can think of are unlikely to have much effect over that short a time.
True, eating out a lot does tend to cut down on your vitamin/mineral intake (due to reduction of fruit and veggie intake), which can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to any crud that's going around. But i think you usually have to be off the stuff for a while before you really notice the results. Besides, the kind of foods that have a lot of vitamins are often just the sort that aren't easily stored in a hotel that would just as soon you not pack out all of your food. My experience has been that it's simpler to just pack a bottle of multivitamins, especially since i'm picky about my veggies.
I've much more frequently heard ppl warn of the effects of living off con suite snacks, which makes a lot more sense to me. A lot of the snacks you'll find there are things like potato chips and candy that have little or no nutritional content. The (ostensibly) human body really doesn't tolerate a lack of protein for very long, and protein is mostly found in nuts and meat and soy products that the con suite doesn't stock. After all, those snacks are meant as a nice treat, not a complete meal plan. The lack of recognizable nutritional content is liable to leave you pretty worn out, and fighting off disease is one of the first places your body is liable to cut corners in order to keep going.
Proteins also digest slower than starches and sugar, so they'll keep you running somewhat longer without getting as hungry. Starches digest faster than much of anything else, so they're good when you need a quick boost of blood sugar but won't keep you running for long. Candy is even worse--sugar highs usually come with sugar crashes.
My experience has been that if i bring my vitamins, fit in some juice or milk when i can, make sure my meals include some significant protein, and eat when i'm hungry, i don't have any problems. But of course that's just me. *smiles*

Keep your eyes out for the hot dog cart that's parked across the street from the Westin. It's cash-only, but the food is priced well below anything you'll get elsewhere.
They have burgers, dogs, sausage and even had brauts once. It was a MUST for artists on the go!

Also, just a suggestion, try to mix up the food you eat; have a variety. My grandmother always told us, the more colour in your food, the healthier.
McDonalds is just a terrible option for a meal (every time I eat at McDonald's, I'm sluggish and perform poorly an hour later.)
Subway is good food. A lot of good sandwiches you can make there with fresh things, cold cut meats and (hate to say it) vegetables.
Cereal, bagels, fresh fruit, juices and milk are excellent food sources for breakfast.
(And this is coming from a lion!)
Also... I'd like to get some info here about Echinacea (Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echinacea ). Someone said if you feel a cold coming on, or if you have a cold and want to get rid of it fast, go for this stuff as well as a super-high dose of Vitamin C (Orange Juice is a great source). Your body's immune system gets a huge boost as it goes to war for you, fight off the cold in a mere 2 days rather than weeks.

permalinkI prefer Quiznos to Subway, sure its a bit more expensive, but the subs are so full they explode.

I haven't read or heard of any studies clearly showing that echinacea has much effect on cold symptoms. Similarly, vitimin C seems mostly to help if you're not normally getting enough of it.
However, a recent study did find that theobromine, found in chocolate and in cacao fruit, has as much or more effect on a cough as codeine.
I think that's pretty cool.
Not that i'm any more inclined to share, of course. *curls tail protectively around her choccie*

permalinkIf Pizza Parma is the place I'm thinking of, just down the
street: the pizza was good (sausage) though I got slight
heartburn later. They didn't have any working A/C when I was
there and it was a hot day but otherwise good.
823 Penn Ave.
menu: http://www.allmenus.com/menus/6099/Pizza-Parma
A Chinese place was nearby--may have been Liang's Hunan,
not sure. (957 Liberty Ave.) affordable and good
menu: http://www.allmenus.com/menus/18542/Liang's_Hunan
I had breakfast at the restaurant in the hotel--yeah pricey
but good. I had been thinking on the Sunday of going to a breakfast place down the street but saw they were closed.
(May have been the Steeltown Diner mentioned above--ran
out of food...?!)
(Yes, closed; from last year people were saying that even
though we TOLD restaurants that they could get a bunch of
business from us, some had limited hours or didn't open
on Sundays regularly...but we understand some places
may stay open longer, etc.)
There is a mini Pizzeria Uno in the hotel too.
The buffet:
The Orchard Café
Cuisine: A la Carte/Buffet
hours: Monday - Friday 6:30 AM - 11:00 AM; Saturday - Sunday 6:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Be sure to eat regularly (that 6/2/1 rule, 6 hours sleep,
2 meals--better yet 3 or have a snack now and then--and
1 bath/shower). Especially if you're diabetic and don't
want low blood sugar.

permalinkHave been to every hotel this Con has had because I've been to every Con we've had, and I believe they all had buffet setups
for breakfast or lunch/dinner, etc. Yes, overpriced but I think the food was pretty good...at the Westin here,
the Wyndham in '05, the Adams Mark before that, etc.
I used to get the breakfast buffet and salad bar --and
the cheesesteak sub plate--back at the old 'Mark and it
wasn't bad.
The Adams Mark was right next to the famous Denny's Of Death.
For some reason there has been a Buca di Beppo Italian
family-style place not far from each of our locations.
We've taken trips there. (Yours truly, dazed from a long drive and a longer afternoon Pirates game, took some wrong turns last year trying to get to the Station Sq. location...yikes...)
This year I may only be at the Con Fri/Sat/Sun so I'm
not sure if I can make it or not. (It's a place where
the prices seem expensive but the plates are fairly big
and delicious and everyone shares.)

permalinkOOH it all sounds so good! not too sure on pizza, tomato sauce gives me indigestion like nothing else. Yoi. However, the rest of it...
We tend to eat out, I packed food last year but TOTALLY forgot about it and it basically went to waste. We tend to hardly eat, anyway. Good, good advice. Will be nicer than last year eating nothing but chinese. Best dang chinese ever, but I digress.

Just a note:
Do not eat Subway there!
Have several reports of food poisoning from them last time around, not to mention the only time I managed food poisoning was at a Subway.
If you can swing it, there's a Quizno's right past it. If you've never had Quizno's, dear god you're in for a treat.

Or you can walk just a little further (0.7 miles vs. 0.4 miles to the closest Quizno's) and find a real Pittsburgh treasure, Primanti Bros. (open 24 hours!) Locals rave about the cheap and huge pastrami or roast beef sandwiches.
I didn't get an opportunity to go there last year, but I'm hoping to still have the energy at the end of the day (ha!) to get there this year.

There is the quick-e-mart (No I'm not kidding) in front of the hotel if you wanna buy basic stuff like drinks or snacks.
If you however need more consistant food here's a list!
(Google Earth for the win!!)
Near the corner of 9th street and Penn , There's pizza Parma .. very good pizza .. but a little bit long to get it..
corner of Smithfield and Oliver (505 Smithfield St ) , there's the good ol' Mcdonald's .. well it may not be the best thing around but it's always cheap..
at 703 Liberty Ave is Subway subs ..
For having been there .. you have to walk a bit but there's
Fu Lai chinese restaurant
at 525 Penn Ave
Very good food!

Not very well! I have flashbacks of AC04 and the great hangovers that I heard about... The con environment is *extremely* dry (air), and unless you're constantly hydrating, (and eating *well!* and healthy) the mix is a bad idea.... Unless you love headaches and nausea.
Then you're set.

was never a fan of convention food. Always salty, greasy, and overpriced. Naturally if you don't eat anything and drink you're screwed; last year I didn;t eat at all (was too cheap and jsut wasn;t hungry) so in taht case you'd be really screwed. Guess I'll just have to see for myself I guess.
AS food goes, I really wish I could have held that ookign demo I suggested back fall so everyone had something better to eat. (the hotel foodservice union makes the dragon sad)

permalinkAs far as soda goes, might want to pick up some 2 ltr bottles somewhere and use the ice provided in your room. Beats paying too much for soda in vending machines--which also sell out
quickly.
The room I had had a refrig in it but it was loaded with various sodas, alcoholic beverages, and snacks which you could
consume--if you didn't mind spending $10 for a beer or
$4 for a can of soda or something (they supposedly take
inventory and whatever you took, you get charged for.
$5 for a packet of peanuts, that kind of thing...)

I wouldnt really Recomend Soda for Re-hyrdration during the Con as Soda not only De-hydrates you, but also can make you feel quite boggy during the con and sometimes Churn a stomach or two. Good Old Tap water was what I drank and I felt awesome the entire con. All you need is a bottle of water to begin with. For about $2 you can get a Litre at any grocery store, and then you just keep refilling. Using the ice from the hotel you can keep your water cool and refreshing ^.^

Seconded. A mix of water and sugar (which is what soda is) is not going to do a good job of hydrating you. Water does it better, and it's free.
I'd also like to point out that we have a number of water stations set up in the hotel and Convention Center, which are replenished by the hotel/CC staff on a regular basis.

Gatorade and Powerade are good, but just one a day is fine, then just drink water. The electrolytes in Gatorade help keep your system up.
Cola is NOT a good method of rehydration... you could end up getting really dizzy if you're constantly fursuiting or running around everywhere.

Neither is 4 red bulls a day, as I found out...
A good way to avoid con crud entirely are products like "airborne". Powders designed to be stirred into water before a trip to help provide an additional oomph to help fight off nastiness.
Vitamin C will also help in wonderful ways.

Aware of that now!!
Got the worst flu of my life at AC04 because of it. My immune system was destroyed due to lack of sleep, poor diet, fatigue from running errands all con and the AC in our room was stuck on max... We had one thin blanket.
Drove the 8 hours back to MA from Philly with a fever of 103, a throbbing headache and severe abdominal pain. For the next five days, my stomach wasn't reabsorbing stomach acid and it made a wreck out of everything below the stomach. I'll spare those details, but pain and bleeding. Yes.
So take it from a bunny, take care of yourself or get the UBERSICKNESS OF DOOM, each and every time. With so many sick people form all over the world, think healthy! Eat out, but maintain balance of fluids and vitamins.

Even if you didn't kill yourself with caffiene overload (no, it doesn't just make you really hyper), it certainly could help along your dehydration if'n you're not careful.
One of the fun effects of caffeine is that it can cause your body to think it's more hydrated than it really is, so you go to the bathroom and drop water your body needs. A lot of drinks don't exactly help with dehydration, but caffeinated stuff can actually make it worse.
My experience with AC in the past has been that i needed to watch out for overheating more than dehydration, of course; then it doesn't matter _as much_ whether the drink is caffeinated so long as it's cold. But then i've found at other venues that i'm somewhat prone to heat exhaustion.

> Vitamin C will also help in wonderful ways.
Actually, it won't. See this article on Quackwatch for the explanation.
The reason why the myth of Vitamin C helping the immune system is so popular, is because the guy who came up with it, Linus Pauling, was the winner of not one, but two Nobel Prizes. Unfortunately, he seemed to have gone completely fruitbat flapjacks in his later years, as as documented in this article.
You should still get 100% of the USDA of Vitamin C, but 8 ounces of Orange Juice will take care of that.
