From what I know, they prefer that you stay at one of the hotels they have room blocks in something to do with filling the hotel blocks....and as for prereg'ing you can do that anytime at the registration page. And iunno about how long it would take to drive from houstan to pittsburg Laughing out loud

Oh, it has a lot to do with our room blocks.

When a convention is held at a hotel, one way we get the function rooms at a cheaper (and by "cheaper", I mean, "something we can afford") price is by guaranteeing the hotel that we will fill a certain number of room nights. In our case, we are responsible for filling a bout 2,500 room nights.

Now here's the not so fun part: if a convention fails to fill its room block, the hotel will charge the convention for the lost revenue on those rooms. So if we were to fall say, 100 room nights short, 100 x $110 per night is $11,000 that we would have to cough up. Because of that aspect, most conventions that fail to fill their room blocks cease to exist.

This is why we ask that people who are staying at a hotel try to get a room in our room block. And we reciprocate by trying to get the best rates possible for those rooms.

That's business for you... they've got to make their money.

Not that it's such a bad thing. They could have been all "Host a furry convention? Ewww! Get away!" Instead, it was more like "Host a furry con? Sure, as long as your money's green!"

Correct. It works both ways - hotels want to have their rooms filled, but hotels are more than happy to do business with us, since we provide them with lots of revenue.

(Fun fact: when the Adam's Mark hotel closed abruptly in 2004, we found ourselves scrambling for a new venue. Within a day or two after the closure, we began receiving calls and emails from hotels all over the region saying, "We heard about the Adam's Mark. Can we host your 2005 convention?" It was rather neat.)

Anyway, that's not to say we're happy with the fact that room blocks must be 100% full, but it is the way that the industry works, and we must live with that.

If you can find a different place to stay at thats cheaper for you, then I don't see any problems. I've been to cons where people would stay at a local friends place and they'd just drive to where the con is being hosted each day. If it saves you money, then go for it.

I would agree with Duncan that drive is longer than 10 hours, well it depends on how traffic is, and how fast you will drive to get down there

Are there still rooms available in the Westin? I checked the site and it seems there are.

There MAY be, but they might not be in our room block. (which would be a very small number)

Or, maybe they became open due to cancellations. If you see an opening and need a room there, I'd recommend going for it!

As far as I know from when we made our reservations, the Westine still had quite a few rooms in the AC block. But they said that there were not as many double rooms left and instead more singles.
