Other than being a fur of course, lol My odd interest: Sirens. Preferably old Civil Defense ones. I got into these loud (and somewhat intimidating) noise makers at the age of 5 when I used to go to a day-care center, which happened to be right next door to the volunteer fire hall. So every time the VFD got called out, this huge canister looking thing on top of the roof (which I thought at the time was a huge speaker) would sound for about 3 minutes before shutting off and coasting down. Here in WM (western Maryland), sirens are used at VFD fire halls to alert the local volunteers of a call. By no means is the sirens used to alert the public of a severe weather warning (even though the county dispatch is the one who triggers the radio receivers to activate the sirens). BUt now I have a view overlooking La Vale which allows me to hear not only LVFD's two sirens (One at each of their stations), but also any within 5 miles. Of course this further sparked my curiosity on how these machines worked. It is kinda interesting to walk out to the deck in the evening and hear those two sirens play their haunting song Anything I collect? Yes, I got two Crouse-Hinds traffic signal heads in the basement along with a Crouse-Hinds 4-way beacon. Now you know a little more about me. |

I presume you're familiar with the Victory Siren. then. All 138 db (at 100 feet) of it.
As for me, I collect con security horror stories. o.O

Mmmm, yes. Victory Siren is like the GOD of all sirens. Nothing in production even touches the Hemi powered Chrysler Air Raid Siren.

Lets see, I am a... odd fur indeed. I like to go around the town wearing pj pants (with non other then Garfield & Odey on it), fake leather moccasins, a blue, button up, long sleeve shirt, a both robe, and either an umbrella or a fake sword. Though now its just the umbrella. PS, and thats all at once btw.
I also like to do other things, like learn stuff (and most people around here are stumped as to why), fix computers, read books (GASP), and other things that are odd by normal human definitions. ^_^

Repairing computers is by no means odd. In fact, today you could make big money from that.
I've repaired computers while here at the house, but I've also installed new Datalux mobile police computers as well.

Also, did anyone noticed that this node is # 666? ???

I'm a road sign geek, somewhat lapsed... I used to make fantasy road signs. The most popular were "Here There Be Dragons, Next 12 Leagues" and "Stop, Pay Troll; Exact Firstborn Only" but my favorite was "Minas Tirith, Next 7 Exits." (Think about it...)
A few years ago when driving home from Anthrocon in Philadelphia, I noticed a new road sign that used a different font -- and backtracked from the next exit to stop and take a picture of it. It used the newly-developed Clearface font in place of trusty ol' FHWA Series E Modified. At first I didn't like it one bit, no sir, but then I read the specs and research (http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/pdfs/clearfont/CTSEng.pdf; 3.6 MB, 117 pages) about how it's much more legible in fog and other poor-visibility conditions. But I still prefer the shape of the digits in the old fonts, especially the 2, the 6 and the 9. The new 1 is better, though.

lol I collect them, and yes I use every one that I have..lol.
If My husband wouldnt kill me (and my cats wouldnt think I just created them a totally rocking Litter box) I would turn my collection of blankets and pillows into one giant comfy soft bed and snuggle into it...lol.
For now I shall have to stick with Snuggling into the Giant pillow on my couch with one blanket...but one day.....one day.....

My interest is sort of parallel with Peter's, only a bit more general: road-geekery. Where roads begin, where they end, and what their histories are. There's a lot of really cool stuff out there (and a lot of really obsessive people who document it all), stuff like:
The lost tunnel of the West Virginia Turnpike
Old US 25E through Cumberland Gap
Lincoln Highway, the first road across America
Dixie Highway, from Florida to Michigan
And of course, just general road weirdness.

I live right off of Dixie Highway in Louisville, KY.....I drive it everyday. It's adoringly called Dixie Dieway once you go just south of Louisville to roughly Ft. Knox area. Though I thought for sure that Dixie ended in Louisville. Dixie doesn't connect to any of the bridges that cross into Indiana.

Just thought I'd share some pictures I just dug up from my hard drive
Federal Signal 3T22 (3T meaning 3 tones and 22 meaning 22 ports) from across the valley:
Sterling M-5 (Surprised this one still works due to it's age):
The one that started it all, the Bowling Green Model 5 (which means it has a 5 HP motor)

And my signal heads from the City of Cumberland:

Just wondering, did you ever wire up your lights so they work on AC outlet power [I had done so using 60 Watt light bulbs] I hear you can also get a flasher setup to:P
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkLocation: Cumberland, Maryland
I have an old Crouse-Hinds flasher board attached to some solid state relays to get the red and green to alternate. However, the two signal heads will be joined together to make a 4 section light, so I'll have another flasher unit made for that. The old Crouse-Hinds Flasher will then power the 4 way beacon hanging from the bottom of my porch.
Right now, the Beacon is under restoration to eliminate the rust and corrosion build-up from it's years in service. But my signal heads run on wall outlet power and on 55 Watt bulbs

Even before I could walk, I had a thing for climbing, and exploration; that led eventually to what I came to call free running. I would do it in woodland areas mostly. My goal was just see how fast I could run through the forest -- dodging branches, switching between two legs and all fours, and climbing trees -- until I got so tiered I had to stop, or until something stopped me. It was not until last year, when I was in the Nederlands, that I learned about parkour, and started practicing the art. (Go here for an explanation http://parkour.net/) As little known as it is in the US, I suppose that it still counts as a weird hobby. I also am a juggler, and can do some fairly amazing things with a yo-yo. Apart from that I am just your average "normal" lion furry.

Something strange about me: My sleep patterns are messed up beyond all belief.

Hmm, well. If you call it a hobby, I will spend countless hours working on a joke called The Aristocrats. Not many people know about the joke, and all I can say is that it can be pretty vulgar. To those of you who do know the joke, the longest running I have had with it is around 70 minutes.

I've had it for 2 years so I doubt there is even a warranty anymore

The warranty officially runs out after two years if you bought applecare with it. If you didn't buy applecare, it ran out long ago. Check the dates, as you may be able to get a repair or replacement by heading to an apple store.
If not, they offer something called iPod recycling. It isn't much, but you can trade in an old iPod for 10% off of a new one.
Just throwing my bit out there, since I work there. Otherwise try Theyain's handiwork, whatever solution suits you best!

Yeah, Warranty died long ago. And there really isn't an apple store around these parts. I was just gonna go ahead and buy a new Nano and give my old iPod to my mom to use as a data storage device (which it still works great as)

Lol I found a new hobby Yesterday that too some seems very odd.
AirSoft! It's like Paintball except instead of plastic guns the rifles and weapoins are realistic, and shoot hard rubber pellets instead of paint balls. So much fun!!!!! Though I'm now sporting some welts in awkward places, I still plan on going back!
Thankgoodness for my colelction of pillows and blankets...lmao.

I play paintball and airsoft as well, and I must say that I still find paintball more realistic, at least if you do not want to spend a fortune. If you want an all metal airsoft gun that fires somewhat like a real rifle it could run you a few thousand dollars, but for a couple hundred you can have a comparable looking and performing paintball gun. I am not trying to start an argument over this though as I do love both sports. Airsoft you can play all year round, it hurts a small fraction less (you can wear less clothing as a result), and let's face it paintball is messy.
As a side note, and if anyone is interested, I found that their is a place to play paintball only 2 minutes from the convention center. Maybe we could organize a game?

I dont think I would ever byu an airsoft gun, I prefer renting them. I foudn the prices for playing the game wioth rented weapons are very similar in range with Paintball, in fact Airsoft runs me a bit cheaper.
I love both however as they both have excellent qualities to them.
I would be up for a paintball game but I think i'm already fully booked for the con.

Sorry to bring this topic back, but I was working with my Grandfather and got to thinking about this. WHo else here still uses Citizen Band Radios? I had a 40 channel UNIDEN in my '87 Blazer, and still have it even though I got rid of the beast. Also got my mom's old GE 40 channel back from grandpap since he got a Cobra.
When my grandfather asked me what my handle was, I just told him that many people just call me "knightFox"

I collect various weapons..mainly melee. I have two pairs of nunchucka ( a regular set then a set of speed chucks...)
I also have various knives, my most notable being:1.a handmade bone knife(so much for airport security....)2. a hand forged knife made from blue steel, with a molded hilt(estimates reach to three or four hundred years old) 3. a pistol grip 440 stainless knife, about 18 inches long with a sandalwood handle insert.
Also, i got a nodachi: basically a 68 inch long katana. It is handforged, folded carbon steel. Full tang, with some sort of a hardwood handle. Its a REAL sword, not a replica like all the junk they sell nowadays, and a very nicely balanced piece.
And i colect some different guns and ammo..my two most notable being a 20mm antiaircraft machine gun round(stolen from the USS Slater) and an authentic 1865 winchester 30-30 lever action.Nice stuff....

Nice!
My grandfather (on my dad's side) left us a 1908 Walther Model 4 and a few other old WWII pistols with us when he died. My other grandfather has a WWII British Enfield No.4 303 sniper rifle that now has a 10x hunting scope on it. Pretty awesome to work an old bolt action rifle

As well as My butterfly knife that was given to me for my birthday *Cry*
my husband collects swords and martial arts weaponry. he has several varieties of Katana, a large two handed Katana, and though they arent technically swords, four Machede's.

THis isn't really odd but I like tattoos and piercings. I have a half sleeve on my left arm of a tribal dragon, and covering the right side of my chest is a pheonix. I laso have both my ears stretched (not punched, but actually stretched) to gauge zero tunnels and as well have my right nipple pierced with a red bead to finish the whole tattoo off. I am planning on getting a few more piercings before AC. probably the space under my lip (I forget the proper term) and somewhere else weird, maybe finish off my other nipple
I am a big believer in body expressions
As well, I have started to collect weapons. I have a couple of custom made shot swordws which hang on my wall on either side of my bed. As well as a broadsword hanging over my tv (But behind it in case if anything happens lol)
And some throwing stars surrounding the broad sword
