Here in Minnesota, our NBC Affiliate KARE-11 News has just said "goodbye" to yet another reporter. His name was Mark Daly. Heard of him? If you were in LA at one of the conventions, then you might have. He just happened to have done a story on us furries. Though, I was a bit perplexed at the clip they put into the newscast: "Mark's matter of fact writing and delivery made the offbeat seem perfect candidates for coverage. There was the "Furries" convention in Los Angeles, in which hundreds of people, including Minnesotans, arrived dressed as human-sized animals. Mark encountered a man completely concealed inside a cat costume. "What's this furry stuff really all about?" he asked without a hint of skepticism. "I can't tell you that," the cat-man replied, "If I tell you that, I'll have to kill you." Absurd? Mark has a certain sense of those stories." Hmm... |

I am not sure how to respond, though I must say, there is no "exact" meaning of furries, at least, outside the fact that we are animal like people. My interpetation could vary from hundreds if not thousands of others. still, I am unsure it is because of the footage and info he had gotten at the con.
This leads me to yet a different question...
How would you answer Marks Question,
My answer would be, "A furry is a person that feels a connection to specific animals, IE myself and Wolves, and tend to follow their habbits. Much like howling when lonely, playing when happy, and protecting when in danger."
If anyone knows how to get ahold of mark, maybe it could help him discover what a furry is, and maybe help him get another news job.

What's wrong with "A furry is someone who likes cartoon animals."

I am sure you could find some people who do not like cartoon animals who call themselves furries =P
I would say anybody who enjoys/appreciates animals (including living creatures that are not in the kingdom Animalia) more then an accepted norm in some way could be considered a furry.

But then that automatically assumes that furries are, and must be, abnormal. Part of what i like about kage's definition is that instead of the frame saying 'furries are weird and if you're normal you're not one of them', it says 'furries are a lot like other folks, and you could be one too if you want.' That really speaks to my condition.
If the cartoon animals is too tight a net to cast, how about 'furries are people who have a particular interest in animals and animal characters, especially ones that have some human qualities'? If the person asking needs more detail after that, we can give it to him/her.
A guy i know, when asked how he'd define quakers (of which he is one) to others, once remarked (wisely) that it depended on who he was talking to. I think most of us can tell the difference between the folks that need the exact definition from those who just need to know that furries aren't all freaks. It's often pretty apparent from the way we're asked. :=8)

I personally like the following definition:
Anyone who makes a hobby out of the appreciation of human/animal anthropomorphization - that being the fictional concept of humans with animal traits or animals with human traits.
That allows people who like it but don't make a hobby out of it to legitimately decline to call themselves "furries", and it makes the term a self-identifier.

nothing .. it's the safest answer of them all ..
I think the more you'll try to explain it in a complex way , the more people will go :"WHATTABUNCHOFREAKS!"
and it's good for me since it's exactly what I am..

permalinkFiring? Where did it say he was fired? If he was fired, they very likely wouldn't have said anything about it, much less bid him goodbye on air. Are you assuming that just because he did a story on furries, he got fired?
Also, I know that the view of many people is "all furries are fursuiting perverts." Would you say that that's a correct view? I certainly wouldn't. Therefore, there certainly are "wrong" views of the furry fandom.

That was... intriguing... to say the least...
'Nuff of the Tigger jokes.
Furries are artists, expressing themselves by an alternative means, through the concepts of the animal kingdom, in spirit, in entertainment, and/or in creativity.
It's about communication. That's all.
What kind of furry you'd like to be... is up to you.
