April is Alcohol Awareness Month

As promised; April is alcohol awareness month. Unfortunately, it takes on a far darker tenor than the caffeine of March. Especially for the furry fandom, given the large influx of young furs each year, many of them first time drinkers and first time con-goers. Some thoughts come to mind: 1.) Drinking isn't a contest. You don't have to keep pace with everyone else. 2.) You don't actually have to drink until you fall down. A nice buzz, usually one or two at a party can be enough. 3.) Be aware. Recently, there have been reports of people receiving drinks laced with GHB, ketamine, or other date rape drugs at room parties. If you feel your mood changing suddenly and inexplicably get help immediately. (and a bit more controversially . . .) 4.) Practice moderation. I emphasize practice. You should know what to expect of yourself beforehand. Don't use Anthrocon or any other public event as your first exposure to alcohol. and of course some links: |

I myself am liquor-free... have to be. It means my life. With a bizarre yet severe allergy to alcohol, you can be assured that I will not drink one drop.
*proud to be a sober fur* ^^

no worries, infact you may be in a better position; pme less fur that'll end up as a hood ordiment crossing the street from the bar and grill.

permalinkThe tips are pretty straight forward and a few I'm sure I should try and start following. The drinking in moderation part especially. Usually I go out every other weekend and feel if i'm going out im going out and getting trashed. I really need to get out of that mind set the only times I really can control my drinking or not even drink at all is if I had a big night the night before i'm good with saying ok today im not going to drink but thats usually because I feel like such crap all i'll do is order gingerale all night. And really it's not that difficult to go out and not drink or even have a few drinks and just get buzzed, it's a good feeling knowing you went out and still can think clearly. Narconon had some information in their faq about alcohol.

Ironic that while reading this I am drinking a beer.
I have to agree with #4. If you have never drank alchohal before and are planning on doing so in a public setting, it is best to moderate what you drink or limit yourself to one, maybe two drinks at the most until you are sure how much you can handle. You dont want your first time drinking to be a bad memory of bad antics and embaressment in front of people you have just met.
And to add on to #3, it's always good to get/open your own drink and never let it out of your sight or put it down. When i'm at parties (a rarity) i'm always placing my hand over my drink when i'm not taking a sip and I never ever let it out of my sight.
But all in all have fun ^.^

Rule #5: If you drink to the point where we (the staff) need to step in and get you professional medical help, that makes us grumpy...

permalinkI would have thought that went for anything, not necessarily alcohol related ;D

Or perhaps the professional medical help for those folks could include getting that tattooed someplace memorable--you know, just as a reminder to those furs and their friends...

This doesn't make much sense as a rule. If I do such and such, what will happen to me? You left out the part about "what will happen".

Trust us. Some things you don't want to know. Better just to leave it up to the vivid imaginations of our congoers. *grin*

You know...AnthroCon - and all the other regional furry conventions which have sprung up around the country - is not a "frat party". It is meant, as near as I have been able to determine through observation, to be a gathering of folks desiring to share their common interests in anthropomorphic animals, be they from movies or comic books or literature or folktales or folksongs or legends or fables; be they ancient as mankind itself, or just spawned during a "writers' SIG" at the convention; and a chance to draw, write, read, publish, display, wear, perform, or sell the artistic output inspired by all of the above listed activities.
True, by doing all of this you get to meet people, and engage in social activities such as attending one of the dances, sharing meals, chatting in the zoo, and just generally "hanging out". And room parties are a natural extension of all this...
...But AnthroCon should NOT be thought of as an EXCUSE to get drunk. If that is what you wish to do, save your travel money and your time, I'm sure that you can do that much more easily in the vicinity of your home - I was a teenager, once - and leave those of us who wish to be alert and attentive, and don't wish to be surrounded by drunken and rowdy kids who will be hung-over and bitchy the next day.
Furry Fandom has suffered the deterioration and loss of its first great convention - ConFURence - because it gradually gained a reputation for, and eventually a following of, attendees who were not there for the "Furry" part. Whether this reputation was warranted or not - and initially, it wasn't - Its attendence fell off, and all the regional cons were started to offer an alternative to what ConFURence had become.
Before all this happened, Furry Fandom was quite remarkable amongst fannish gatherings for the very abstentious, tea-totalling, "dry" body of people in its ranks; furry gatherings at homes and conventions were not alcohol-fueled, for the most part. But then, Furry Fandom was not as skewed quite so young as it is now - Furry Fans then were old enough to drink in bars and lounges, if that is what they wanted to do, and Furry Gatherings were occasions for doing something else.
Furry fans would never say, "I'm just here for the beer!" in the past; but that seems more and more common, of late.
Now, I myself may have an alcoholic beverage with dinner, or have a couple (as in two) of cordial drinks in a tavern or hotel bar - but they aren't my reason for going to AnthroCon, and I am not all that happy with the message which seems to be conveyed when some persons make a big show out of the role which alcohol plays in their convention experience.

permalinkI think any month is an awareness month if you are a heavy drinker.

permalinkQuite the opposite, heavy drinking leads to a great deal of non-awareness.

That's only until the next morning. Then you're plenty aware, and probably wish you weren't. *grin*
