Hello, all!  Forgive my awkward wording here, as I have never been savvy with forum posts.  I am very excited and love the idea of Anthrocon and the 'furry' fandom, however, I do not find myself to be a furry, but more of a costume enthusiast.  I find the idea of dressing up as a dog (my 'fursona', you could say) intriguing!  I have a fursuit ordered (omg you have no idea how excited I've been - I ordered it February and I'll be getting it this coming March) and I plan on going to Anthrocon in 2012.

Of course, I have probably done enough research about fursuits and Anthrocon to last me a lifetime (however I do enjoy going to websites and read much more, my curiosity knows no bounds!).  So, I know more about the convention than most newbies.

However, I am quite confuzzled about how I should go about being me and my love of costumes.  I don't consider myself a furry, as I previously stated, although I have no problems against it.  I feel closer to furries because I do share their love for animals... however I cannot seem to befriend them or try to share my excitement for Anthrocon with others.

I feel quite alone, and I was wondering if you furries, costume and animal lovers could help me with my predicament?  I would love to meet people at the convention this coming June (yes it's a long way away, but I am a planner)!

So I suppose I should start off by saying that my 'fursona' is an dog, and I'd like to keep my identity a secret for now, as I am going to be entering both the Anthrocon Dance Competition AND the Masquerade.

Any comments, questions, concerns, salutations and messages I would love to recieve!  I would love to be acknowledged and assimilated into this fandom, even though I am just a costume enthusiast.  Boy, am I a strange person!

Thank you for your time!

Thats completely and totally fine! Not everyone who goes to Anthrocon are furries. I've met tons of people who just like the general convention atmosphere or go to fulfill their own fascination that a bunch of people would dress up in giant animal suits. By the way, only about 20% of attendees wear fursuits.

I feel you'll come to realize that us "furries" are regular, contributing citizens just like anyone else in the world. Coupled with each person's unique qualities, the only real difference is that we think that talking animals are cool.

Hopefully we will see you at AC and other conventions!

That is my primary reason I started following the fandom myself.  I've always made my own Halloween costumes and loved the many costumes and designs out there in many of the venues such as the renaissance faires and movies.  I particularly was interested in how the movies created some of their monsters.  Finding out about Anthrocon and the many costumes built and the load of information about the how's made me go to Anthrocon.

Drawing and painting is also big in the fandom and I benefited from that as well.  Just a dymanic crowd to be around.

Hope you have fun next year.

My story is just like Rover T. Mutt's. Love making costumes, seeing costumes, learning about how costumes are made. Equally love animal and non-animal costumes. Love the fun atmosphere and learning opportunities at the con. I also enjoy the whimsy of having a "fursona."

Daisy, sounds like you and I have about the same angle on the fandom, yet I would call myself a furry and you would not. No matter, you don't have to be a furry but you do share many interests with furries and I'm sure you'd have fun at the con. So I'm not exactly sure what your "predicament" is? Just keep on doing what you love, making and wearing your costumes, and come on out to next year's con and have fun with people who have a lot of similar (as well as different!) interests. You may especially love some of the informative panels on arts and various aspects of costume-making. The panels this year on face and body painting and on making and using costume prosthetics from latex and other materials were great, and by no means exclusive to animal costumes.

Thank you all for commenting!  The reason why I am awkward is because when I go there, I feel like I will have no way to really communicate and get to know people there.  I wish to make friends, and I know people will already know each other somewhat from the different furry websites and forums.  Which is kind of a reason why I reached out and posted here.

Maybe I'm just being strange!  I'm not sure.

Oh, I understand now. You're not being strange at all. It IS hard to break into a group. You're doing exactly the right thing by coming to the website to chat and meet people before the event. When you get to the con, going to panels is a good way to meet small groups of people with similar interests.
