Anthrocon announces dates for 2012!
Anthrocon 2012 will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA, from JUNE 14 to JUNE 17, 2012. Please note that this is one week earlier than was previously announced! We hope that this does not cause any inconvenience for any of our members; if it does, we are deeply sorry. Here is the story:
Pittsburgh has been given a very rare opportunity to host an event that they have been wanting to host for many years. The only trouble was that the proposed event (and we won't say what it is until it is officially announced) would lie in part over Anthrocon's planned weekend. The City approached Anthrocon very deferentially and asked us if we would consider moving our 2012 convention just one week earlier to help them realize their collective dream. As much as we love our adopted home city and would do anything in our power to support them, we were hesitant to change the date of our convention after having announced it.
Pittsburgh replied with, "What if we got you another hundred hotel rooms within walking distance of the Convention Center?"
We said, "Where do we sign?"
So with that agreement, in 2012 we ought to have enough hotel space for just about everyone who wants to stay. Of course, we would have signed anyway. Anthrocon is proud to have become a Pittsburgh institution, and as accommodating as they have been to us over the last five years, we were honor-bound to return the favor in any way that we could.
I can't help but notice June 13th to 16th is Wednesday to Saturday. Is this correct or should it be June 14th to 17th?
My entirely uneducated guess would be the 2012 NHL Draft.
It sounds like whatever this event Pittsburgh has waited to have for so long is something the city is really looking forward to having. If this event is that important to the city of Pittsburgh, AC should definitely be on a different weekend. I love AC and had the best weekend in a long time there, but I'll accept the date change as long as the con will still go on (whether or not I can make it to next year's AC).

Yay! This just means I have one less week to wait for Anthrocon 2012! So excited!

I think it's awesome that we can accomodate something that the city's been dying to do. And as an avid hockey fan, I have my fingers crossed for the speculation noted above.

Oh marf, Kage. There's no one out there who can get stuff done, (or bs it to look like it's done) like you besides, you know you secretly wish AC was year round... or at least a month long
I think it's insanely badass that the city actually considers anthrocon a significant enough event that they would come to us to try and work things out rather than just screwing us by stacking two events on the same weekend.

With the speculation flying, I must state that I can still neither confirm nor deny any rumors one way or the other, as per my agreement with the Pittsburgh folks.

Seriously - I think I can guess what they are actually hoping to host. If I am correct, it would be a great feather in the cap of the city, and give them a singular opportunity to show off their city, and host a bunch of important people (well, other important people).
They should be up to the task, and its good that we can aid them by making this minor change. Here's hoping they snag the event!

This is actually quite exciting! This brings me back to my first Anthrocon back in 2006; where then it was this very weekend! Birthday cons are ALWAYS fun!

I thought all the evidence of that event was DESTROYED with SHREDDING and FIRE three days after it happened!!!!
That is actually an excellent change of dates as far as I am concerned. Late June/early July is a major pain in the backside for me. (And many other Australians also because it's the end of the financial year. Inventory time!) A mere week earlier makes life so much easier.
Of course I still have the problem of *affording* to go next year.
No problem here!
At my job, the week or so before the Fourth of July is kinda' all hands on deck. So the earlier in June that AC happens means fewer favors for me to call in and fewer elbows that I have to (gently) twist to get the time off!
