Good Afternoon Everyone:

I am both a first time to Anthrocon and a first time wearing a fursuit.

This topic addresses the second issue, that of the fursuit.

I have some questions regarding wearing a fursuit as in overcoming initial "cloustraphobia" axiety, proper breathing proceedures, and praticing proper "hydration".

I will be coming in a full suit, and I will also be utalizing a walker while in the suit, is dexterity of the suit's paws going to present any challenges, while navigating the walker throughout the convention.

Any feedback would be greatly apprecriated.

Many Thanks,

Rukario

We have a fursuit greenroom called "the Headless Lounge" located outside of the ballroom in the Convention Center. There may also be a secondary room in the Westin (we're not sure right now how much use that room got last year). You should drink a lot of water, and since it's your first time, you should plan to stop in to the Headless Lounge and cool off a minimum of every 30 minutes or so, or more frequently if you begin to feel unwell.

It is strongly recommended that you have a friend accompany you as a spotter, since fursuits have very big blind spots.

As for the claustrophia and breathing question, I shall leave that to the proper professionals to answer!

Thanks for the infor Unclekage! I am planning to be "aclemated" to my suit well before AC, so that I can be in it longer.

I sure hope there are fursuiter panels again this year. I went to most of them last year. It would be in your best interest to attend at least a few of those panels. I believe they were hosted by LuckyDog, JD Puppy, and the immortal Tony Ringtail. Eye-wink

Very good furs with LOTS of knowledge on fursuiting.

i advise the whole zen thing, if you feel unwell then take deep cleansing breath, otherwise just breath calmly and normally. as for claustrophobia, either practice in the suit to see if you are gonna have serious problems or take some pills...WESTERN MEDICINE RULEZ!!!! i only know this because my uncle is a doctor and deals with this all the time;)

i wouldnt advise taking any pills, they react differently for each person, and they usually dehydrate you, and if its hot out, and your hot in your fursuit, that little extra dehydration from the pills could push you across the health safety line.

Also, contrary to popular belief, you don't want to start breathing deep when you get hot. Most people aren't good and relaxation breathing and usually end up giving themselves headaches. If you start getting warm, just breathe softer, not deeper, it gives your salive more time to evaporate and cool the air going in.

my bad, that works for most people that my uncle treated. the breathing thing worked for me with my claustrophobia as a kid though...

Suggestion for dealing with hydration issues:

Depending on how much slack there is between you and the suit itself could allow you enough space to wear what's known as a "hydration system". Some peole prefer calling them "Camelbak's" but either way, it's all the same thing.

A hydration system is composed of a bladder you wear on your back, like a backpack. It has a pretty long tube that's easy to access so any time you need to get some water into you, you just bite down on the head and suck.

They come in different sizes and I've found for me the best one to be the 3 litre pack. Anyways, here are a couple of pics.

This is what one looks like:

This should give you a better idea of what it looks like on a person:

Hopefully that helps Smiling

If your suit head restricts fresh air in, like mine, I find that it's a really good idea to stop moving every so often, take a really deep slow breath, and release it. Due to the design of my head, I don't get quite enough oxygen in there for active extended dancing. Often times, I feel my abdomen muscles cramping up, which is caused by improper breathing. If that starts happening to you, get out of the activity immediately. If possible, move slowly to the headless lounge, but if you can't make it there, remove your head whereve you're at. Cramping + claustrophobia + heat + lack of oxygen = panic = bad things happening. Your health and mental state have to come before 'maintaining the illusion'.
