How can I promote my work coming from relative anonymity?
As a hobby, I produce electronic dance music. I've been doing it for years for my own edification, but I want to spread the love. After attending Anthrocon this year (my first furry convention ever), and as a "newbie" in the community as of the past couple years, I decided that I'd start producing my music under my fursona name and see if I can promote it within the community. I've never done anything artist-like in this community before, and there is a lot of people out there already for various types of things, so it's easy to get lost in the crowd.
My question is, how do you promote yourself in the community so that you get any exposure? I share my stuff with my friends but it's rare that it gets beyond that, as I'm pretty much the only one in my group that's both passionate about electronic dance music and a regular participant in the community (nowadays). I post my stuff both on FurAffinity and on Soundclick, and have a Twitter feed for my music (linked in my signature) that a few of my friends follow. But I was wondering if there's anyone I should contact who could help me promote my music or something. I don't have an album yet (though I do have a single with two tracks). I'm not crazy on the idea of burning tons of copies of CDs to stock a dealer table, especially if I don't have a lot out yet and I am relatively unknown, so my ability to self-promote is pretty nil. Are there people I can talk to out there who has something like a furry record label who could help me promote, with good results and reasonable terms?
And yes, I know you have to have something good and worth promoting before you can even think that you'd get much exposure.
I think my stuff is pretty good, and others seem to as well, though I rarely get a real unbiased opinion, since it's usually my friends giving the critique. However, I have certainly heard worse independent electronic dance music out there so I feel I'm doing all right.
You could also try SoundCloud. I know a couple of labels that'll listen to demos through SoundCloud.
There is actually a furry record label out there. It's called SkunkTiger. They had a table at AC this year.
Hm, both good ideas. Thanks.
I'll take a look at skunktiger. I just don't want to have to sign my life away plus any children I might have in the future.
If they had a table at AC this year, that's promising.
Furry's a small community, and you're probably not going to nab much exposure that way. If you want people from the fandom to hear your music you basically have to do it the old fashioned way, which is spam. A lot. Spam a ton. Post everywhere. Tell your friends. Tell your friends' friends. You can also demo to DJ at cons and slip your stuff in, but the odds of being asked what you played are pretty low. The reality of it is that the market for "furry music" is pretty small and the majority of folks are not looking for good artists from the fandom, but good artists, period.
There are furry labels, but again (grand scheme of things, speaking from a realistic perspective) they don't have fantastic penetration and most folks are not aware of them/do not shop them. That's not to say NOBODY does, but no strictly furry label is going to help you get much attention in the fandom since most of them are struggling with doing the exact same thing.
So, TL;DR version you're on your own mostly, but the good news is that on the internet, once your stuff is good enough you don't need to push quite as hard because it'll work its way around naturally. Until then just keep having fun.
That's understandable.
I certainly want to push it around the furry community, though. However, I am not relegating myself solely to that. I suppose I consider it a step from nothing, where I actually get some experience selling my stuff. I don't expect to make it a career, however I love seeing people enjoy my music and I'd love it if people enjoyed it enough to seek it out. :3
Have you considered self-publishing? Especially if you're going to do it on such a limited basis to start, you could set up a band camp and buy some ad space on FA (pretty cheap IIRC) and that way you can get money for your work and have someone else handle all the heavy lifting.
I have mused about it but haven't done anything like that simply because I have no idea where to start. That, and I didn't have a stable idea of how I wanted to present my music to the public (though now I kind of do, though I'm still needing to figure out how to work out the album art side of things). I still am somewhat new to the whole marketing deal, and I am kind of anxious that I might do something wrong and get in over my head. I have a full time job too so I can't spend all my time on this, but I want to get something out there, at least.
What do you mean by "band camp"? Like a homepage or something?
Bandcamp is a service that lets you sell your music and merch online to promote yourself. They host all the MP3 samples and do all the commerce and stuff and you just watch the money roll in (assuming you make sales.)
If you want some frank advice, though, speaking as a colleague and someone who's been around the produce perform promote block a couple times, I'd right now focus on your production and less on the marketing side, especially if you have limited time. :]
And by the way, if any of you want to listen to my stuff and see what you think, you can hit up my Twitter or check out my postings at the two sites below. (I hope you don't mind me posting this.)

I suppose you could put a sample of your stuff on you tube too?
