Being a now-experienced con-goer and also a long-time Anthrocon STAFF member, I would like to say that I highly encourage and endorse that if you two wished to make a local connection before the con, it can only enforce and help the security you can both feel once at the con itself. To have that great starting base of a common friend to share the con time with, yet also interact and socialize with the con at large I believe is the best foot forward to start your con going experience.  You'll build at-con friendships as you go along and attend more, but for those first few, it absolutely helps to have one, two, a few "local strong contacts" so you have that sense of focus and friendship as you build that larger circle.
