Ridiculed? Please help a younger fur.
What if I was younger than 15, wore a partial to Anthrocon and it was horrid.
Would I be criticized like I am in my town? "Oh, sorry. I thought you were just allergetic to the sun. I was gonna say 'oh, poor little girl.' *snickers*"
Would I be rudly ignored?
Would I be ridiculed? "Are you sure that is a wolf? It looks like a moose to me." "*insert old ladies laughing here* That little girl thinks she's a furry. SHe's not getting anywhere in life."
All those quotes in Italics are all that I can hear, along with much more snickering and strange faces. I am an optimist, don't get me wrong. But this is all that I can think about...
I would hope not! I went to my first con a few weeks ago, and everyone was very happy and fun and accepting! But yes, there are going to be people out there who look down on furries.....those people are what i call "closed-minded". For me, i really don't care what people think or say about me.....if i want to wear a fursuit and goof around and make people smile, then i will do it.
Keep suiting Fur-Friend.....
If that is all you can think about, you should reconsider your stance as an optimist.
The furry fandom is one of the most open, accepting, and friendly groups I've ever encountered, regardless of whatever potentially-weird thing you're into. The number of "burned" furs is vastly outnumbered by the legions of folks offering positive response and support.
Also, you're young, and the only negative things you might hear are jealousy that you have so much ahead of you, in terms of new experiences, things to see, and friends to make. Spend less time worrying and more time preparing for something you'll undoubtedly enjoy.
(And in the off-chance you do hear anything negative, pay it no mind. Sometimes people are just dicks. Especially when they don't understand something.)
Also, you know how to properly spell the word "furry", and more than likely can spell "fursuit". You're alright in my book.
The fandom is quite tolerant of spelling errors, too.
Thank you Chiaroscuro, wintersolstice8, and MiltoniusPrime. I really appreciate your seemingly contagious positivity. I feel much better about attending the con next year, and about builing fursuits and outings as a whole. I hope you guys/gals all have fun at anthrocon if you are attending. I hope to see you there!
Ditto what Milt said. ^_^ There is also a fairly eventful fursuit building track with lots of helpful furs to answer questions and help you improve your skills. If you play video games, then Milt and I will probably see you at some point. Think of Anthrocon as a chance to have a few days full of not getting ridiculled, because plenty of other people will be wearing/doing/being things that would get us strange looks any other day.
Also, it should be totally possible to crochet a tail! Cat-type tails would probably be easiest.. Give this method a try: http://www.hookandneedles.com/2008/03/amigurumi-tutorial-1/ Start with half a ball for the end of the tail, then just keep going until its long enough.
Thank you Kiric. I appreciate it. Maybe I will see you sometimes. Do you have a Feral Heart? And I would make a chrochet tail, but i'd rather make a pillow tail, mainly so that it will match my partial. Our craft store's yarn selection is extremely limited to about eight colors, and I really want to make this partial and wear it to the con. Besides, maybe I'll get better at it.
i know how you feel. when i walked into school wearing my tail people liked it. they asked me why i wore it and i said cause im a furry. then one of the older kids came up to me and told me to "yiff in hell" what does that mean?
but i did meet a new freind and hes a furry like i am. hes very sweet and funny.
It means that the older person is an awkward teenager with a poor self-image who can only feel better about himself by taunting others.
Nothing you need to worry about. He'll grow out of it.
Oh my god.
That is terrible. The nerve that that person has... >:(
I would like to send Nightmare to devour his soul.
But seriously, don't worry about it. Almost all furries get that exact comment once or unluckily, more than once.
Thank you for being so nice. I would tell you what it means, but I honestly wish I didn't know. I had found a few come backs for that, but I forgot them all as of now...

You get a bunch of people who act negatively towards furs merely because it is a concept in which they dont understand, others act like that because they just dont like us. For the latter of the two you have two options really for dealing with those kinds of people,1: Just ignore them and with time eventually they will go away.2. Nod your head and agree with them when they try to insult you or the fandom and they will be utterly puzzled on why you're agreeing with them instead of arguing with them and you wont hear from them again. As for having a "Horrid suit" I personally dont believe in such a thing, yes while some fursuits are made in a higher quality while others not so much it all is what you can afford at the time and when you have the chance you can always change up when you can afford to do so but never think of your suit as bad or ugly because that is something you can hold and be proud of. A perfect example is when i chose to go suiting for haloween and some little girl no more than about 5 insulted me saying i looked like a stupid pig, granted i wasnt all too happy about having my fursuit attacked like that but that important thing is to take it all with a grain of salt and smile no matter what you're presented with.
Remind him that he is the only one doing anything wrong. Jumping to conclusions about people's lifestyles with learning substantially about them is a cheap cop-out.
Good advice for practically anything: Have a sense of humor.
Some of the worst ways you can react to anything involve taking it too seriously. People are always going to point out/pick on anything they think is strange, usually because they don't understand it. Don't get upset or blow up at someone for teasing you. On the opposite side, don't become reclusive and bitter because one person thinks you're odd. You won't always need to think of a snappy comeback because most insults are based on negative stereotypes, and as long as you aren't embracing/reinforcing those stereotypes, they probably don't apply to you.
And even if they do, just let it pass.
Hi Blade Chan... like everyone has said, the fandom is very loving and very accepting... hey they let me in... HA HA, I am going to my first con next summer in Pittsburgh, I am having my first (partial) suit made, it's all what you can afford, as to what kind of suit you have, it just takes some time, but don't worry about going to AC, or any other con, and be critized (I didn't spell that right... LOL).... just go have a ball, I intend too... I have met some wonderful people (furs) on here and hope to meet some of them in person at AC... I am very excited... kudo's too you buddy.

Here's the honest response: We might notice, but we'll like you anyway.
I see 'bad' or 'ugly' of just not-my-taste fursuits every year. With 854 of of them at Anthrocon in a year, you do get a range from the fantastic to the average to the poor. But furry fans have great respect for those trying to wear and build fursuits, and while we may cast an eye in critique, people will not cast a word in criticism. Most of the convention doesn't wear a fursuit at all; and we appreciate the efforts taken in wearing one, and doubly in building one.
In summary:, you'll be in a place that knows what quality fursuit construction is; but you'll be in the best, most supportive place possible to wear any fursuit, regardless of quality. You won't be criticized, ignored, nor ridiculed.
