TV Channels?
Ok, so I am one of the ones who likes to watch TV shows from TV channels that aren't as common in hotel rooms (e.g. Doctor Who and Top Gear), and I was wondering if any of the hotels close to the convention had BBCAmerica on their list of channels?
As someone who is not an official anything who doesn't have up-to-the-minute information, I can speak.
I've never stayed in the Omni. When I stayed in the other 3 hotels, I did not find that channel on their selections. I do not know if they have ADDED it, or if it was always an option to pay-per-view the channels.
However, the usual attitude of people at a convention to the television set is that it's something to use to get the weather off of the news, or as background noise while getting ready, or to kill a little time with while digesting or trying to fall asleep. So, really, I wouldn't be giving a lot of thought as to what's on during the con, other than "news stories about the con."
If you're watching TV at anthrocon, you're doing it wrong. That said, most of the close-by hotels only carry a limited subset of basic cable, and BBC America's not a part of it.
The crowd arriving on Wednesday night would beg to differ.
people show up as early as a week in advance.
It still stands... if you're watching TV at Anthrocon, EVEN a week in advance being there, you're doing it wrong. There is TONS of stuff to do in Pittsburgh, and I'm fairly certain the TV is less interesting than those things. ...I think we have links for stuff to do in Pittsburgh, don't we? Somewhere?
It's a little out of date, but we have http://www.anthrocon.org/node/5042/welcome-around-pittsburgh-forum
I'll keep this in mind when I arrive last year at 2 in the morning on Wednesday night/Thursday morning, and have trouble getting to sleep. *thumbs up* Just going from experience.
haha, I suppose in situations like that, the TV would be something to do
But it can't be denied that most of the time, there's at least something going on in Pittsburgh, just maybe not at 2AM on a Thursday
I definitely agree with that. I'm just being picky about wording/time/location. I don't bother turning on a TV once I wake up on Thursday.
not too get too far off subject. But there are devices like Slingbox that let you watch tv from your home on your portible device. Not to mention many cable channels have internet presence with episodes online.
The only time I've ever used a TV at the cons I've been to was when we hooked video games up to the thing. (This has frequently necessitated bringing a TV in from somewhere else.)
I was arriving a few days before the con so thats why I was asking
Like what? Tuesday? Some other people show up then, too. :>
some people like to keep up with current events in the news or catch sporting events or their fave tv shows even while on vacation. Not to mention after a long day of dealing with fellow furs some people dont want to socialise anymore and just unwind for an hour or 2 before they go to bed.
I plan on getting there Tuesday, and I imagine I /MIGHT/ turn the television on, just to flip through the channels and see what they have. That'll be about all I'll use it for. Other than that, and possible the weather, I plan on being busy till the following Monday.
As said, the hotels will have a certain amount of channels but not too many; I found some motels in outlying
areas have even more (I have been known to frequent those a few days before and after the Con) but you'll
have so much to see and do otherwise. I will say at one point a few yrs back I grabbed a small pizza and took it back to
my room, watched local news as I ate, and saw KDKA-TV's Ken Rice talk about the "Arthrocon" (sic) in town...

For that, you would have to call the hotels. We don't have that information on file.
