information about badges at the con
hello i have a question. i see many people selling con bagdes. when you get a membership for ac you get a badge. does someone draw your character on it? or do you have to buy that sepratly? i thought when you get a con badge a artist edits it for you. thanks!
At the last AC, everyone attending had badges that were all the same design with their badge names on them. They didn't their include custom characters on them. You buy badges with characters separately. Badges of custom characters can be purchased at cons in person, or through art sites like FA.
Edit: Charlie beat me to it.
http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Conbadge , just for the slight additional info. 'Con badges' is a slightly ambiguous term that way, which is why you'll hear 'Fursona Badge' or 'Membership Badge' used for clarity.
*insert "we dont need no stinking badges " joke here *

Pssst!...Uhm, it's "badgers"...as in, "We don't got to show you no stinking badgers!!" That's what makes it a Furry pun.
(And for those in our audience who are under the age of 40 and miss the joke, it is a reference to the classic movie, "The Treasure of Sierra Madre". Look it up!)
And I believe that this was the catalyst which pushed JBadger to order 10,000 "Foxes Are Guilty" ribbons. Of which he probably still has, oh, about 8,000 which he can again hand out, if he were so inclined - so let's lay off the "stinking badger" jokes.
Gotta be quick, with this lot - or lucky!

I take it you haven't seen UHF?

Sorry, but no - can't say that I have.
Thank you for the link, though - After watching it (and at 49.2 kbps, it took a while), I looked up the movie. Seems that people didn't see it in droves (with apologies to Samuel Goldwyn).
Tens of millions of people have seen "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" over the years, though, and that's why I referenced it, rather than as part of Al "Jazzbeaux" Collins' schtick, which I first heard on late-night radio in 1968 from the Purple Grotto - something which only a couple million people born before 1983 and living in New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and San Francisco would have ever heard on radio or seen on local TV. Too obscure for this audience, I'm afraid.
that UHF is a classic. lol
Of course!
well I`m under 40 but I know the joke first through UHF. Though Ive seen my share of westerns because of my dad and grandpas.
Don't forget UHF!
Drat, looks like I'm a few replies too late on that one!
*laughs* You just totally dated yourself (and anyone who remembers where that quote came from).
Either the "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" or "Blazing Saddles" will do. :-) (And I know about the first one becuase my boss and coworker enjoy TCM and AMC in the background at the shop. If I hear one more John Wayne movie....
Yeah! Another person who doesn't like John Wayne. I thought I was the only one.
Not by any stretch of the imagination. The combination of that extreme macho persona i don't identify with a silly speaking manner and a bunch of films that relegate women and people of color to some pretty antiquated and two dimensional roles plus script writing that palints a pretty hard-line black-and-white picture of moral issues...well, it's nothing that appeals to me. About the only time i like john wayne is when nathan lane is badly imitating him in The Birdcage.
Ooh, I love you guys!
Yeah, I'm subjected to John Wayne about once a week or so, when there's a JW movie on. Since I can't avoid it, I make my own mental Rifftrax for the movies, usually bashing his misogynistic characters. Heh, my neighborhood even has a "John Wayne Drive" which is rather ironic, considering how much I, ah, dislike his acting.
You'll probably find this too true to be funny

They are two separate and different things. The con badge you are given at Registration has your name on it (the fannish name you ask for). It is basically the same for all attendees and identifies you as an official member of the con with the right to attend all functions you are entitled to. (The limit here is age: fans under 18 are not allowed to attend certain functions which are considered 'adult'.)
The other type of badge is a personal badge. Basically, you find an artist who is willing to draw it for you, agree on a price and pay appropriately. If the artist is in Artist Alley, you will follow the Alley's payment rules. If they have a Dealer's table, you'll pay them directly. You may find someone who will do one for free, but don't depend on that.
The difference between them is simple: the con badge is required to attend Anthrocon functions, the personal badge is not. The personal badge should be something that more reflects you and your fursona.
