Just a quick reminder that the deadline for submissions to the Anthrocon 2007 conbook is less than a month away! The Anthrocon 2007 conbook is a great opportunity to showcase your work. We are currently seeking submissions of artwork, fiction, photography, and articles for publication. We welcome any submissions of most any nature, although priority may be given to works that complement the theme of the convention, 'Looking to the Future.' Pieces should be in the 'G' to 'PG-13' rating. Anthrocon is also having a drawing for everyone who submits material to the convention book. The prize? Nothing less than an 'honorary' Super-Sponsorship! You will get all the Super-Sponsor perks: Shorter registration line, Convention T-shirt, a super-sponsor only meal with our guests of honor, and a special gift that only the super-sponsors receive. This package is valued at $175.00. Remember, your submission (and release form) must be received no later than April 30, 2007 to be eligible for the drawing. Winners will be randomly selected on May 1, 2007. The winners will be notified by e-mail (or snail-mail, if an e-mail address is not available) immediately after the drawing is held. Members of the Anthrocon Board of Directors are not eligible for this drawing, but everyone else is welcome. If the winner already has purchased a membership, the alternate prize offered will be a free upgrade to super-sponsor status. Prizes may not be applied against future years, and must be claimed for the 2007 convention. For complete guidelines and release form, check out the Anthrocon Conbook Submission Guidelines page at We look forward to hearing from you! |

I submitted my stories as usual. I just hope my snail-mailed release forms got there! I always worry about that.

Ok, for advertising, we don' need to submit a release form do we?

Sort of . . . but it needs to have "Pay to Anthrocon, Inc." and dollar signs on it.

For advertising, we generally just need the Advertising form. The only reason you would send a release form along is if your ad contains artwork drawn by someone else (the release form should be filled out by the artist).

Ack, I didn't send one of those. What about if the person who sent the ad has rights on the artwork?

As long as we have your information and know what you're paying for, it's fine. If you have the rights to the artwork and are paying us to put the ad in, we generally assume you want it published. -:)

I had an email from Anthrocon bounce back on me when I submitted my art to the conbook. I don't know if it got to you guys or not.
I don't care about winning anything, so if it didn't go through can I attempt to resend it?

What address did you send it to?
It should have been book.2007 (AT) anthrocon.org.

Yeah, that was the one.
When I sent an email asking if the submission had been received, it went through. But I got another one back earlier this morning and I think it was the submission itself.

Can you forward the suspect message to me? My email is anthrocon-2007 (AT) anthrocon.org. Thanks!

My email went through fine when I sent them, but interestingly, I followed the upload instructions to try to put the submission and the scanned release form on the FTP server and I got a 553 error ("Could not create file"). I tried passive mode and that didn't fix the problem, and I tried it from three different programs on two different OSes (CoreFTP and something else for Windows, and command-line ftp for linux) and none of them worked. I don't know if you're the right person to diagnose server issues, but you might want to take a look at the permissions on /home/ftp/incoming.

Here's what I saw in the logs:
After the first (successful) upload shown above, there were additional attempts to upload the file, all of which had 553 errors. It would seem that once a file exists, the FTP server will not let you overwrite it. This makes sense, so that artists do not overwrite each others' artwork.
If you'd like to try uploading that file again, please change the filename. (I recommend adding a number to the end, so that you can just increment it if you still have problems. i.e., buniform1.jpg, buniform2.jpg, etc.)

Ah-hah! Okay, that makes sense. I don't know if anything can be done about it, but the nature of the error message itself is somewhat misleading. Perhaps something could be added to the upload instructions informing people that attempting to upload a file with the same name as one already present will cause an error? I could imagine a scenario in which two people both try to upload "2007AnthroconSubmission.jpg" and one of them gets an inexplicable error message.

I agree, it is misleading, or at least obtuse.
I'll look into doing something to the login message for next year's conbook submissions, seeing that this year's have come to a close.
