The convention doesn't officially start until opening ceremonies on Friday morning though there are some events that do happen on Thursday evening (usually starting around 5:00pm).  You will be able to pick up your badge starting early Thursday afternoon when registration opens and be able to use it to get into the events on Thursday night such as the dance but officially you are paying for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Agreed!

...we're slowly wrapping our heads around the notion of considering ourselves a four-day convention. Even if many of the staff there there five, six, or seven days. So little changes like that are one more sign of surrender.

It's not possible; the staff has jobs to get back to. (As do most of our attendees.)

They also have full-time paid staff.  We already ask a lot of our long-suffering staff members, none of whom are paid for their trouble.  I couldn't bear to ask them to put in an additional day.
