I have used professional AV equipment for a play when I was in 6th grade, but I am in 11th grade this year and I wasnted to know if that still counts as experience for becoming an AV type vulunteer. If not, I'm definitely willing to use my strong back and brave the battlefield that you guys call registration.

We are always happy to have volunteers.  Gen. Talon is the director in charge of the dances and AV and would be able to answer any questions you have about working in that area.  If you want to volunteer all you need to do is stop by con ops and let them know.  If you want to work in a specific area they will be able to let you know if they need help there or other areas that also may need help.

As far as registration we are always happy to have as much help we can get.  If you are there you can show up to con ops around 3-4 pm on Wednesday.  Around that time we can use the help unloading the truck and of course stuffing con bags on Wednesday night.  We always can use a lot of help on Thursday as that is our busiest time at registration.

I would suggest that you also look over the Volunteer FAQ.  There is a lot of good information there.

I might also point out that registration isn't the only department that eats volunteers like popcorn.

The art show also experiences a fairly constant need for volunteers (whereas registration needs an army at the beginning and then settles down to the point that staff can mostly manage the flow).  We are particularly in need friday morning, when we have folks checking bags and helping artists get their work checked in; and sunday afternoon, when we need to process a lot of payments, help artists check their unsold art out, and start breaking down the art show structure.  But we have volunteers working on a couple of tasks just about anytime we're open.

In general, if you're looking to volunteer and you haven't made arrangements to do so before, the best thing to do is to walk into con ops and say, "Hi, I'm a volunteer!  Is there anywhere around the con that i can be helpful?"  They'll fix you up.  Smiling

One thing about volunteering is that if you work enough hours, you can get a free AC t-shirt, or even a free membership to next year's AC!  I earned a t-shirt after volunteering 12 hours.  I would totally recommend doing it! Eye-wink

A new shirt is good... it replaces the one you got all sweaty and dirty volunteering ^.=.^

I volunteered at Further Confusion (got a free badge rollover from working 20+hours) and basically the whole time I was running around and volunteering like a chicken with my head cut off. It was hard work, but a lot of fun as well. Is volunteering for Anthrocon any different or is it basically the same?

There will be similarities and differences. We'd like tot hink we'd use you a bit more tactically; Further Confusion this year has a new venue and that always makes for a lot of scrambling. Hard work but Fun work does sound about right, though!

Just as a sample, four tasks that eat up a lot of volunteers over the course of the weekend are:

--assumbling registration packets and goodie bags (collating papers, sticking small objects in a bag...)

--bag check at the art show (taking people's purses and backpacks and cameras and such and placing them in secure storage while they view the art show

--registration during the opening rush (taking people's information, fetching their badges and registration packet, getting them oriented)

--artist check-in (checking over artists' work, making sure all paperwork is filled out properly, getting paperwork tuned in for filing)

There are a lot of other tasks, but those aren't a bad indicator.  Unless you're working on truck loading or unloading offsite (or you're one of those people who just tends to sweat early and often), there's not much that's going to get you too horribly sweaty and dirty, and most of it is just a lot of twiddly bits that require attention but not a lot of skill plus a certain amount of light fetching and carrying.  Still, it can be hard work, and we try to afford you opportunities for a little fun while you're at it.  Smiling

If you want an interesting and quirky 'back stage experience' Jak Ferret and I are always agreeable for volunteers for green room help and escorts for acts to/from backstage during Masquerade showtime.  Volunteer List will be up Friday after opening Ceremonies at Con Ops.
