Hi folks! Johnny Blanco here! This is not my first AC , not by a longshot so I am posting this in the general category so I hope people don't mind? I dunno the whole layout of Pittsburgh so I am gonna ask a few questions for the people that DID go last year and hopefully get some feedback. 1) First thing I wanna know is food.. what's available.. and PLEASE tell me there's a place where I can get a philly cheesesteak or some good chinese food. 2) Weather. Just HOW hot is it in Pittsburgh? it was GOREGOUS in Philly.. but when we moved downtown it was .. bleech.. god.. hot. Is it worse in Pittsburgh or better? 3) Ok, I might be an idiot but there was something for the fursuiter floor.. how do I request that? (looks abit embarassed) That's pretty much stuff I wanna know. Ummm.. this year's AC is VERY special as it's my 15th anniversary in the fandom and I can't wait to go to this con! I fly out on the 3rd and get there the morning of the 4th (staying at the westin! WOOT!!! Johnny |

We got totally soaked on the way to the train station too.
For most of the con it was hot or warm but not uncomfortably hot I'd say.

Last few times i've gone, i've just worn long pants and a sleeveless top with a jacket or long-sleeved shirt in my bag. Pittsburgh wasn't significantly different in weather from philadelphia.
Inside, by my standards, it treads the line between long sleeved and short sleeved shirt weather; i've always figured that it was to help make the space more livable for our fursuiters. :=8)
Outside i'm often a little warmer than i want to be in long pants, but not dangerously so. 'Sides, all of the action is inside, so i mostly just go out to fetch food. I've kept a pair of shorts in my luggage in the past, but i don't use them much.

There are some good restaurant discussions and recommendations in this thread. Sadly, I'd say you're on the wrong side of the state (and a few years too late!) for an authentic Philly cheesesteak, but one of the local grills might be able to come up with a reasonable facsimile of one.
As for the weather, you can look at past weather information for Pittsburgh here. Looking at the more detailed info here, here are the readings at noon on July 6 at Pittsburgh International Airport (a bit outside downtown):
2006 PTSUNNY 68 F, 48% humidity, low that night of 52 F
2005 PTSUNNY 72 F, 81% humidity, low of 64 F
2004 MOSUNNY 74 F, 73% humidity, low of 72 F
2003 PTSUNNY 81 F, 69% humidity, low of 67 F
2002 PTSUNNY 77 F, 40% humidity, low of 54 F
You already found the answer on the fursuit floor question, I see

permalinkThere have been some food threads here and I mentioned the Chinese place. I thought it was pretty good. Liang's Hunan at 957 Liberty St., within walking distance
http://www.allmenus.com/menus/18542/Liang
Temperature wise it didn't seem bad last year but I'm not a fursuiter (i.e., didn't have to walk around in suit)
Pizza Parma...etc.
might want to try doing this: center the map on Pittsburgh
at http://maps.yahoo.com
Click Browse by Category, then All restaurants. The conv.
center is the big building on the Allegheny River near
Ft. Duquesne Blvd and Penn Ave. When you click All
Restaurants, a bunch of numbered bubbles come up and as you put your mouse over a restaurant name on the left, it
shows up on the right
Liang's Chinese
Steel City diner etc
or Click Pizza and you'll see Pizza Parma, Monte Cello's
etc...Bars and Clubs, etc
The Westin itself has breakfast buffet, a mini-Pizzeria
Uno etc
You can also click some other selections and find
ATMs (under Community Services); Travel and Transit, etc.

If all you want is a box of cereal, I wouldn't recommend the buffet. The buffet is, like any other buffet, if you want to eat quite a bit.

Sadly, the pizza that they serve at the Pizzaria Uno kiosk by the hotel is pretty much exactly what you would get if you bought the same pizza in the freezer section of your local grocery store. I know this for a fact since they wouldn't serve us last year at close to their 7 PM (!) closing time on Saturday because "they didn't defrost enough pizzas for the day."

yeah, and the bagel place is horrible, I'm used to them actually TOASTING the bagel for the same price though, so maybe I have unreasonable expectations. And would it be too much to ask for butter that isn't in a brick with the hardness of one?
