I figured that improper spelling would attract people to this topic. Anyway, just some fun here, put a couple of my favourite picson a website I just built with my new computer, and I figure that Anthrocon pics is the best way to do it. Feel free to take a look and tell me what you think: http://www.ultimategamers.org/anthrocon/pics06/Site/Photos.html If there's anything messed up, or if you feel I should put proper credits in, let me know and I will do it right away. I've been thinking about using this as a template for next year's pics. |

I take exception to the caption "You're blind if you missed this guy". I spent the entire con keeping an eye out for him and I just so happened to NEVER be in the area!
That really annoyed me too, because that was two cons that I missed him. This year I have spotters with orders to EMP his butt to keep him in place until I can track him down and take a picture of him myself

Yes, the original creator was Triggur. He sold the suit in the Charity Auction several Anthrocons ago.

YOU USED A MAC, BLARGH XD
One of these days, I'm gonna stick an image at the bottom of my website that says, "Made on a PC (c)" ;p
PS: Sorry, this is my "I'm a web developer for life"-ish-ness speaking. That and I have a certain disdain for the Mac userbase, thanks to C|Net comment threads, hehe! I'm really joking though ;p

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO XD
Nah, it's no big deal, it's just that the whole "anybody can do anything with a Mac!" attitude bugs me considering that I actually know how to make websites, no matter what kind of computer I'm using at the time ;p
That and the fact that most Mac users (well, this is based, again, off of C|Net comment threads, which is worse for the mac-users than Slashdot is for the linux-users) I've observed are very zealot-ish about their choice of PC o.o
I do have a very good friend who is practically a Mac dealer and a Mac zealot himself, BUT he knows what he's talking about, and has extensive windows and mac experience, so I allow it

Well, you could also look it from this perspective - I can do everything a Mac user can do, but I can do it on what everybody says is a 'crippled' system
I also got my computer for free and have easy access to parts for upgrades, and if I ever for some reason get really fed up with Windows, I can just go Ubuntu.
I hold that there's a different platform for every person.. some Win.. some Linux... some Mac. Having used all three operating systems, I have to say I like Mac OS X the least of the three, so why would I use it?
[[ANYWAY, my apologies ^^ I had no intention of starting a whole Mac/Win flamewar thing - there's C-Net and Slashdot for that! - but I fear that I may feel obligated to defend myself should I get ganged up on by a bunch of Mac users, though. XD]]

The main reason I use OS/X is because of its BSD/POSIX core. I can compile and run things like Apache and PHP, which I use day-to-day for software development. The GUI comes in a close second, though.
No problem about the content, since I really don't see much of a flamewar going on. Everyone in this thread seems pretty cool so far. *crosses fingers*

I learned how to read on a mac LC. It still works after all these years. (17 to be exact) I've upgraded several times since then though hehe. I've got nothing against PCs in general, I've always preferred macs though.

I had a Mac Classic that I loved.
But I can't stand the newer generations of Macs =/ I hate Mac OS X, I don't like the mice, or the laptop keyboards....
The systems are decent (and run Windows real well!) but they're rather expensive for what you get, especially for someone like me who wouldn't even use Mac OS X.

permalinkI don't know anyone who actually uses the mouse that came with their computer, whether a PC or Mac user.
At any rate, there are zealots for every angle of the computer world, but you end up hearing about them because they're the loudest. There are plenty of non-zealot Mac users, myself amoung them.
In fact I have both a PC and Mac desktop, and a PC and Mac laptop. I prefer to do most of my work on my Mac desktop but I appreciate both systems and use both frequently. And I've never met a laptop keyboard I liked on any system! D:

Hehe, I'd say you seem to be in the minority. It just always seems like every Mac user I see takes every possible opportunity to bash Windows/Bill Gates/Microsoft/etc.
My worry is that alot of Mac users trust every word Steve Job says even when his intentions are just as business-motivated (if not more) than Bill Gates' are. Apple and MS are both companies, and they both want your money! People I think sometimes forget that ;p

Really? How interesting. Almost all of the mac users i've known have taken much more of an "Either works but i know this one best" attitude, or maybe an "each has stuff it does really well and the stuff i want to do is easier/better on this one" attitude. Once i did know one guy who felt that macs were basically pcs only better organized, but that was 10 years ago. Who knows what he thinks now.
The only hardline zealot i know now is my father, and he's anti-mac because of an incident so old it should be carbon dated. *wrysmile*
*shrugs* I guess it just depends on the circles you move in.

Been using 'em like forever. I know how the various mac oses work a lot more than I know how windows works. I still know windows pretty good though. I've been liking OS X more as time goes on I must say. With each revision the features that are added get better and better.
I do sell these computers though... so I like them of course... I don't force people to buy macs, I let them make their own decisions. I find that it just so happens people like a lot of what macs have to offer when they come and check them out.
So yeah - yay computers!

I read a lot of tech news (C|Net, slashdot, etc.) and the comment threads get very polarized. There's a lot of platform bashing going on in such places.
Mind you, I have known a couple people that use macs IRL, and it hasn't so much been like that. I have one friend that is very polarized towards Mac, but he's had extensive computer experience both ways, so I don't have a problem with it. And he knows what the pros/cons of each are.
I don't hate the systems so much as, there's really nothing about them that makes me want to spend more money than I have to on one. I don't like the OS and they cost alot ;p

It happens all the time. I work for Micro Center, and we sell all kinds of computers, but I work specifically for the Mac Department.
Recently, I've proven to the store about my passion in Macintosh computing, and broke a single-person sales record for my department out of the entire company. One E-mail of mine explaining it went up very high through two levels of management: one at Micro Center, and one at Apple Computer. Basically, they know me, and they know I can sell Macs.
How do I sell Macs? They sell themselves. They WORK.
$16,405 in a single day in Apple sales. I made over $300 in commission. I worked 12 hours in that day, and my pay rate calculated out was about $29 per hour.
Some come into my department with fear that they wouldn't know what to do with a Mac. They've never used one before. No prob, we just introduce them to the system, skip out the techno-babble, and get straight to the point.
Some customers are Mac-gurus. But ironically, these customers are the hardest to sell to. They know what they want and won't buy anything else.
The "switchers" is where I make the most money. However, there is an occasional person who is religiously Windows-based and will even try to convert me.
Nice try.

You hit the nail on the head for selling macs. You're lucky though, I don't make commission... Best times are right before college in the summer. I've sold ridiculous numbers of computers in the past, but I don't recall any numbers (since to me they don't matter much anyway
)
I find that I end up helping people in general a lot too, and that's pretty rewarding.

As one who has used both, I find Windows OS's, to be much more user friendly. Truth be known, I find Mac machines to be far more durable for those who especially due a lot of traveling, even though, you will always see me with my Dell.

Windows, user-friendly? I have a Mac at home and use Windows machines at work. When I have to transfer files between them, I use a USB thumb drive. To safely remove it from the Mac, I right-click on its icon and choose "Eject." On Windows, I have to:
1. Right-click on the icon for "Eject or Remove Hardware" in the System Tray.
2. In the dialog box that appears, click "Stop."
3. In the second dialog box that appears, make sure USB Mass Storage Device is selected, and click "OK."
4. In the third dialog box that appears, click "OK."
5. Click "OK" to dismiss the remaining (first) dialog box.
Which is more user-friendly, again?

That is curious you have to go through all that, and as such, would certainly explain why you choose a Mac over a Windows machine. I am not wanting to start a flame war here, I have a easier time with Windows because I am more familar with Windows based OS's (with the exception of Vista) than Mac OS's (The last one I used was OS8 I believe).
Bottom line is, ask 100 different people their preference, responses will be varied.
All the best,
Rukario

That's unfortunate. OS 8 is so out of date, you should take a peek at OS X just to see what you've missed over these 10 or so years since OS 8 was released...
You should also take a look at Vista too, since it's quickly taking over all the new windows machines - you'll run into that sooner or later as well. I recently saw my friend's partition of Vista, and one thing's for sure - it is very shiny.

When I was at school, I used a thumb drive to transfer files between my mac and school's computers. There's an easier way actually - instead of right click on the tray icon left click on it and then you'll get the option to stop the device right there. Kinda not documented well, but yeah...
As of late I've been doing all file transfers with FTP, SFTP, SCP, or just using the built in apache server, but then again, most of my file transfers have been one way lately - mac > off to somewhere else... The ftp system I have set up is pretty nice though; a moderately tweaked way through the OS X built in server. If you're curious I could show you how I did it because it works quite well.
