Good Afternoon:

As the title of the thread implies, I am looking to get some feedback, or sort a dialogue with a fellow fur, regarding proper fursuit "Lingo". Rukario generally does not speak, and as such, will be relying on bodily gestures in order to communicate with others at the convention.

I am looking for any feedback on standard gestures (e.g. patting twice on the head, using paws to communicate intent, etc.) that would be understood by other suiters, and would enchance the enjoyment of my charater by others in attendence.

Any assistance that anyone can provide would be greatly apprecriated.

Many Thanks,

Rukario

I've only suited at a con once before but i know miming taking off your head means your looking for the headless lounge, and i kick up my leg to show i need some help going to the bathroom when the time comes. placing your paws over your face and muzzle means you are acting shy or do not want your picture being taken. holding your paw over your eyes means your looking for someone or something.

thats all i can remember at the moment, but it's also a good idea to have someone 'handling' you to make sure you don't walk into anything and to talk to when you need something you can't mime if you don't talk often.

Some fursuit gestures are subtle and hard to understand. Some are obvious.

The big role in fursuiting is that body language is your *only* language, so when you're performing, you really need to make an effort.

Way too many times I find myself asking the fursuiter "What?" because I don't get what they mean.

Kaze Lionpawz made some decent points.

Personally, I've never partaken in a mascot activity myself, at least until my fur-suit is worked on and finished. Instead, I've did plenty of research on this subject. I'll be delighted on donating some information.

Obviously enough, anyone owning a fur-suit should automatically know a little common-sense about typical body language, which applies to those of you who prefer acting over actual speak. Keep in mind that some gestures are more evident than others when you're out with the crowd, so don't expect every single individual to interpret what you're trying to say. There's a multitude of different gestures you can display, most can be done with your arms and hands, but using your entire body helps greatly. Additionally, having somebody as your trainer / guide / master / or however you wish to pronounce that role; such a supervisor should be someone that you have close relations with, maybe your significant other, a short/long-term friend, or even the Con-Staff would be more than delighted to assist you, if any are within that given room.

Here are ten simple gestures:

  • "I want a hug...!" = Extend out both arms, palms open.
  • "I want my picture taken!" = Using both hands, make a square with both thumbs and index fingers.
  • "No photographs, please...!" = Hide your face, using one or both hands.
  • "Where's the bathroom...?" = Cross your legs and hands, or... suspend a leg for a brief moment.
  • "I'm looking for somebody/something!" = Imitate a salute, twisting torso left-to-right.
  • "Yes...!" = Easy enough, just briefly nod your head.
  • "No...!" = If you can't shake your head, seek a physician A.S.A.P. Sticking out tongue
  • "I'm hungry...!" = Rub your stomach with a hand.
  • "I'm hot...! = Fan at your head with a hand
  • "Come over here, please...!" = Point at a specific person, then curl an index finger several times.

It's really not that difficult to adjust to body language. In fact, many furs has told me how fun it can be. As I said before, there's many more different styles of gestures, so try to experiment a little to get a feel for each one.

That's about all I can think about, at the moment.

Hope that helps, Rukario...!

and for signalize other furs?
gestures for animals? say me, for example: for a bunny, walrus, wolf, dog, cat... etc... =3 now, if you want say: Hey Fox I'm here!!!...and standard gesture's lenguage, is inoperant in furs?? because so many furs have 4 or have not fingers(dolphin or shark furries)and many signals are showing by hands in different fingers postures =3
well, if you wanna say other coplikated thing like: I have a box of switches... really I think that gestures have many limits... and is partial like my bad english he,he,he,heh =D =3

Fur-suits lacking fingers is a tough challenge in itself. Those characters require much more persuasion if they want to gesture without having to talk, normally. As such, I recommend a spotter, so things can run smoothly.

Fur-suits with fewer than four fingers, to say the least, won't be as difficult to gesture with. Yet, why would somebody opt-out that extra digit? Don't you want to grab objects? sarcastically rolls eyes

Anyway, I wasn't trying to be biased towards a specific species, I was speaking about fur-suits in general. Honestly, if a fur-suiter desires to do a complicated gesture, then I think it would be necessary to do some quality acting. Sticking out tongue

GAH! That "U"! Curse the British language and its excessive use of that foul letter! It will lead to the demise of Western civilization and bring about the end of times! That is why the colonies rebelled! They were tired of that letter and just couldn't stand having to put it into every other word they spoke.

Hundreds of years ago, bored British persons would take some cash up to the center of language somewhere in London and change a word of their choice to include the letter "u". This is what British people did for entertainment before sports became popular.

During World War II, Germany was intent on crushing Britain under the irony of that foul letter, hence the U-boat! It wasn't an abbreviation for the term "underwater boat", it was a political statement!

World War III will tear the world apart when British peoples have finally put a "u" into every word of their own language. With nothing else better to do, lobbyists will invade foreign countries and start lobbying for them to include that forsaken letter in their own words! The world will be divided between those with U's, and those without. Then some nutcase will start assassinating foreign leaders of countries without "u" with horseshoes! Then he will start replacing each "u" with "w" just to irritate everyone twice as much! This will lead to the epic war that will leave no human alive!

So for the sake of humanity, limit the use of that letter!

[end rant]

Okay, I was bored. Can you tell? Oh and nothing personal against the British.

Except he is from an area that normally doesn't use the u. We tend to drop letters not add them like the word "up-nort".

it seems to me that furs who tend to talk with thier paws seem to have less trouble miming. like me i talk with paw movments and i hav little trouble expressing myself silently.
also as an american i'd like to say, the british as well as the english are awsome.

I still wonder why Fursuiters don't talk. Many Anthro animals talk. If I ever get a fursuit I want to be a talking animal. Thats the world I wish I could live in, where all the animals talk.

Probably because of how muffled their voices would sound.

Exkhaniber's picture

Yeah I think they're much cuter without hearing a garbled, overheated and exhausted human voice eeking out from the muzzle. The silence is sorta part of the illusion too, although each suiter seems to have his or her* own view on it and act accordingly.

*-I've yet to actually find a female fursuiter so I can only assume they exist. Eye-wink

JavaChicken, Diadexxus, Toraneko, Carol Kitty, and Lynx (as Nessa the PunkSkunk) come to mind immediately. There are quite a few female fursuiters.

Female fursuiters are somewhat unusual. But then females in general, according to one (admittedly limited) study i read, make up about 15% of the overall furry population, so it's probably not specific to fursuiters.

Actually, i'd be interested to see if the attendance records for AC and some of the other major gathers reflect that statistic.

Our 2005 attendance stats are here. I do not believe that gender was tracked.

As for stats on furries in general, the University of California recently conducted a survey of furries. The announcement of the results can be read over on WikiFur news.

There are a couple of reasons. The first is most fursuits don't have an articulated jaw. So if the character is talking, it makes things look..well...fake. When many fursuiters get in character, they want the illusion that this critter is totally real..even if it's toony. So unless the jaw can move, it usually looks ridiculous for a character to talk. It's just a costume at that point.

Aside from spoiling the illusion (or the "magic"), there is a more practical reason. It has its roots in profssional character/mascot appearances. Typically, when a company develops a character, they want to have an ability to have multiple people perform. In doing so, if the characters talked, they'd have different voices. There would be no consistency. (How would it look to a child to have Bugs Bunny talking like a surfer or Mickey Mouse talking in a baritone voice? The kids would know the difference instantly.)

There's an even smaller subset of performers who genuinely enjoy the challenge of getting you to understand what they are trying to say without speaking. For them, it's totally a performance thing.

Hope that gives you a bit of insight?

Now pantamiming is fine for most suits however, voice is a huge part of my personal personality so leaving it out, really kinda kills myself Sad

soo yeah i make a point in being really loud in suit, well as loud as i am in person. though my suit is open muzzle so not even the slightest muffle here!

luckly it fits well with my jumping around and such, the suit actualy makes that part stand out, speaking is just as fun as pantiming i think as well!

so yeah, both sides!
