Furry Artist "Dark" Natasha was injured Tuesday Night when an SUV blew through a red light and T-Boned her car. She did black out, coming to as the firemen were using the Jaws of Life to peel her out of the car. Her pelvis is fractured in several places and she's bruised up. But she's in good spirits. The rest of the gang has been on the phone with her and she's doing fine. She'll be in the hospital for a few days, then laid up at home for several weeks. |

Whoa...
Holy sh*t. Well like many will probably say, it's good to hear nothing worse came out of it. I'm not really familiar with her all that much. Artist or not, I hope she recovers okay and that her physiotherapy doesn't go longer than it should.

Yikes, that really sucks. Well, at least I'm glad she's alright. I know all to well what it's like when an SUV parks in your car.

She WAS out here in California to visit friends in San Diego, and then to attend CaliFur! Did this happen in San Diego? Is that where she is currently hospitalised?
...And IF this was in San Diego - her mother has become a regular attendee (and table-watcher, art-hanger, and general Helpful Furry Fan). Was her mother in San Diego, with her? Is _SHE_ all right?
Where can cards/flowers be sent?

Tell her that I wish her a speedy recovery, and I will pray for her. I've been in car accidents myself... it's a traumatic experience.

Such untimely accidents do happen when least expected.
As I recall - and this information is semi-related; if anybody happens to like Major League Baseball, remember St. Louis Cardinal's (key reliever pitcher) Josh Hancock? Similar situation, only that Hancock's injuries were fatal, happened about a week ago, now. [Though, the poor guy drove onto a flat-bed truck -WITH- his S.U.V.]
I only thought I'd bring that up since the convention center is extremely close to P.N.C. Park and to those that adore baseball. A real shame such events happen, at random. R.I.P., Josh Hancock.
I'm extremely pleased to hear that Dark Natasha is in a stable condition, though I grieve that she has extensive damage to her pelvis, which I'll bet would be a painful experience. As with every-other-fur's wishes, I also do pray for a speedy recovery, and that she'll be able to walk normally.

permalinkJust doing rumor control. No massive damage. Three fractures, which are simply cracks in the bone. No surgery involved. The MIGHT immobilize her leg for a few weeks, the might not. They just has to take it easy and stay off her feet for a couple of months till the cracks heal.
As of now she'll be at AC, but probably still on a cane or a walker.

That is entirely unacceptable, for the distance she'll have to walk to get to the dealers' room! Something must be done.

I know! I'll assign a team of Dorsai to carry her to and from the Dealer's Room in a sedan chair.

O.o what is it with SUV drivers? Had accident with an SUV a few years ago and they drove off too without stopping.
Oh well, good to hear shes doing ok. Hope she wont have to skip out of going to the con, but I could understand if she had to. Recovering from broken bones is no small deal. If she comes though, then we can have an "Anthrocast" signing *ducks the tomatoes*

I wouldn't cry a bit if all SUVs were illegal. I see no practical use for them, and their drivers are typically (read: not all) pretty arrogant, and couldn't drive a matchbox car out of a happy meal box. They smash into other people, changing lives forever, and couldn't care less.

What many people need to learn is that SUVs, while good for towing and hauling things around, are not entirely made for soccer moms who putt around town at 35 MPH and will never actually haul anything. If that's the case, they should look into a Minivan instead of a SUV.
Thankfully I wasn't one of those people when I had my hulking 1987 S-10 Blazer. Granted, I felt safer since it was made of all metal exterior and not these weak plastic panels. But I never drove like it was a game of bumper cars. And while it had a seriously underpowered 2.8 Liter cast iron engine in it, Me and my dad did some pretty good hauling with her. Now I'm beginning to wish that I never scrapped it.
But it's good to hear that she's doing well.

SUVs have a practical application as an general-use utility vehicle, for those who want the cargo-hauling capability of a pickup truck with the people-hauling capability of a car in one vehicle. It was a brilliant idea when they first came out, and had they kept that purpose, this wouldn't be an issue.
The problem came when soccer moms realized that they could put as many kids in a Land Rover as they could in a minivan, except that the Land Rover was a recognized "premium" vehicle, and the craze spread like wildfire.
Now, they've turned into grossly over-capable people-movers, which is also an intriguing idea by itself. A vehicle that seats more than 5 is a nice alternative to minivans, and puts it in a happy medium between cars and full-size vans, a void that doesn't have anything else to fill it. The core issue is that these vehicles should be driven like what they truly are, full-size trucks. Some of the newer models have deceptively car-like handling, which messes with even the best driver's perceptions, and creates a 3-ton top-heavy vehicle being driven like it weighs only 1.

Well even now, SUVs are being sub catagorized. My S-10 was considered a Mini-SUV while the Suburban was a full sized behemoth when compared to my little 2 ton S-10, which had brakes on it that were designed for a car.
For example. The Equinox is The smallest of Chevy's line of SUVs, progressing up to the Trail Blazer, then the Tahoe and finally, the monster Suburban.
But also, SUV's come with another (now mostly standard) feature, 4WD. The Cumberland City police has 2 TrailBlazers, about 4 Dodge Durangos, one Ford Escape, and a Military Peacekeeper, all with 4x4 capabilities, which are mostly used to respond to stranded motorists

Hrmmm...Me, i have less of an issue with car-like handling, if it allows the behemoth to move adeptly. With that much metal, it seems like you'd need all the help you can get. Then again, if the things didn't feel as nice to drive, maybe they'd be less attractive, resulting in fewer of the beasties on the road.
I feel more troubled by the number of people who drive it not because they have a need for that kind of hauling capacity (people or stuff), but because they feel it makes them safer. I'm all for safety, but it seems like that safety comes from a feeling that others will think twice before plowing into them. And that seems to mean
1. that many of those drivers feel more free to take inappropriate risks, instead of driving with a modicum of consideration, and
2. that they're building a sense of safety based on inequality, ie. i'm more safe because you're less safe. If everyone on the road is in SUVs, then that perceived safety disappears, just as if no one drove them; in that sense, i'm only safe in an SUV if others are scared of it. I can't feel wholly at peace with a safety measure if the underlying premise is that others won't have it.
I'd rather see people putting effort into improving communication on the road and sharing space peaceably. Of course, that's just me, confirmed pedestrian that i am. *shrugs*

Sure you're safe, and the other guy in the SUV will probably be okay, but what about pedestrians?
Here we keep lobbying for a couple of the downtown parallel parking spaces near crosswalks to be pulled out because of SUVs. There's plenty of clearance and you can see pedestrians just fine if a car is parked there. If its an SUV pedestrians in the crosswalk are invisible until they step out in the crosswalk. It's a miracle no ones been killed. That they're hazards even parked is very telling.
The big appeal is the alleged ability to go offroad. My father is a camp ranger. He's busy hauling equipment along dirt roads, carrying tools, moving workcrews, and everything you'd expect you'd want an SUV for. For about 5 years of that, he did that with a Taurus sedan. With 2 wheel drive! On unpaved roads. The Taurus finally died (it was almost 15 and almost 200,000 miles) and replaced it with a truck. He HATES the truck. The clutch is about to fall out, so he's looking for another work vehicle which will likely end up being another car. Why'd he hate the SUVS? (gas mileage aside). They're top heavy and frequently have a very low undercarriage. They'd hang up and tip on the terrain he was working on. The little sedan was a better workhorse for him. If even a camp ranger doesn't use an SUV, what the heck are half these people doing with one?

I used to live in the San Gabriel mountains of Southern California, but worked out in the Mojave Desert. I had a beat-up 1966 International Harvester Scout, with the "short cab" top, so it looked like a small pick-up truck. It had a 4-cylinder engine, but a dual-range transfer case and locking hubs, that you had to get out and actually turn to lock. As a "4-wheeler", it was quite well-suited; just high enough, clearance-wise, just narrow enough, to go anywhere I wished to go.
During the entire time that I owned it, from 1977 until 1986, I found only two occasions when I needed the 4WD - when it snowed, and one very sandy spot by the Mojave River, in Victorville. Every other possible sandtrap or tractionless area, I could avoid with a little recon, checking out the terrain and road by getting out and looking before blindly driving through. And I did a LOT of driving about and exploring in that desert and in those mountains.
The job I had was as a police and fire dispatcher, in the small desert city of Adelanto. Every weekend, we would roll our fire units and EMTs to assist the California Divsion of Forestry (CDF) fire units, out to El Mirage Dry Lake. If you've ever seen a commercial involving automobiles racing across a flat lake bed, it was probably filmed at El Mirage. At any given weekend, there could be 3,000 or more people out around or on that lake bed, including dirt bikers, 4-wheelers, sand-sailors, ultralight flyers, model rocketry enthusiasts, and general jackasses.
The emergency callouts always seemed to be for accidents involving 4-wheelers, hands-down the most common call. Someone would take a big, heavy Chevy P/U with 4WD, jack up the suspension (making it top-heavy), bolt on a chrome "light bar" (can't call them "roll bars" anymore, because they don't seem to work effectively in that role) and load the bed of the truck with a bunch of teenagers, and proceed to smear themselves across the lakebed or surrounding rolling hillocks and ravines. Very messy - very fatal.
...And the US Forest Service, serving in the mountains above Wrightwood? Even in ski-season, all they had were a couple of 2WD pickup trucks, perhaps with winches. They went everywhere with those things, again thanks to careful local knowledge and scoping out the terrain before blindly driving through.
Many suburbanites buy SUVs, believing that when ski-season is here, they won't need snowchains - they have 4WD! When the CHP sets up a chain restriction, its funny to watch these folks argue about how they got the SUV so that they wouldn't have to put on snowchains! And then they go back down the hill, come back with chains, and spend an hour or so, removing tires to put on the chains, because they don't know how it's supposed to be done! Silly Flatlanders...

Four wheel drive seems to imply to some folks that they can drive up ANYTHING.
Fortunately we don't have quite as many people going offroading here cause everything's covered in trees and rocks and mixed with swamps. However, at one point we were clearing brush for a hunter pace (a horse event) and were working along a steep, dry, slope under a power line rightaway. There were all kinds of ATV tracks along it. Lots of marks of wipeouts. It was a real scramble on foot, easily around 45 degrees.
We come up over a little rise and see sticking out of a gully a set of tires. Wedged completely upside down in an erosion gully is a brand new full-size truck. Brand new. Its wedged in so tight the doors won't open. We scrambled down into wash to make sure nobody was stuck in it. Thankfully they appeared to have gotten out through the cab window in back.
This was miles from anywhere and on such a steep pitch, even if they got a crane out there, they couldn't have got it a flat enough spot to anchor it.
So far as I know, it's still slowly rusting away upside down up there, sporadically terrorizing workcrews that are afraid they'll find a body in it.

Kind of like the folks who think their turn signal gives them to do whatever they please short of driving on the sidewalk. *rollseyesandwrysmiles*
Some people just aren't that serious about piloting a half ton of metal and plastic at high speeds.

permalinkYikes!
For her own enjoyment, at least it looks like she can make it to AC for now.
In the "no duh" dept, the more she stays off the fractures NOW , the better her chances to be able to make AC. I had fractured ribs (I was walking and an idiot ran a red light) and was able to appear in public at something important 2 months later- so long as I remembered I was INJURED and didn't try to do anything radical.
She'll want to fight those very normal human urges to get up a lot and do stuff.

Hope she gets better and SUVs .. Eh their not the problems around here.
No to offend anyone its the ladies with their hubbys big trucks that think they can just gun it at the last second around here.. Or the older people (60+)
That causes the car wrecks here. Only seen two SUVs wrecks in the last two years.
And again no offence and again Hope she gets better and on her feet again ^_^

I was hit by a car about 2 years ago (November 11th) and i was just fine, but about a year later I twisted my ankle outside of a Jack in the Box and couldn't move if it without aching for about 3 weeks. But one thing I do suggest to the DMV is that they have special permits for SUV drivers (they have them for Motorcycles), because SUVs have so many blind spots on them and can't really see anything coming.
Anyways to the point of this post GET WELL SOON ^^ . Hope to see you at AC (I'll be black and red dragon fursuiter).

Erf, I just heard about this. Do give her my best wishes. Hip fractures are unpleasant. I hope she'll be able to attend AC, as I was looking forward to chatting with her as usual and discussing drawing ideas. We need some sort of Alladin-esque caravan to transport her to the dealer's room, I think. Complete with the servants throwing gold coins to the crowd...
I had my car totaled when I drifted through a red-light a couple years ago (strange narcoleptic-like metabolic condition no one really understands). But as both I and the car that hit me were going fairly slow, no one was injured at all. I was so out of it, I thought the other car had run the red light!
